The complimentary color of red is green. Just sayin.

yes, it is. But my house is blue and I don't want it to look like a Christmas ornament. In fact part of what made me consider blue is that the box looks a bit like Santa's house. And red white and blue... there's always an American flag out front right there, too.....

Gluing up!

There's a vaguely heart shaped depression in the bark of our Sycamore tree which faces the deck. In gonna get the copper engraved with our initials and wedding date and mount it there. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cabac9735e.jpg |
Just spraying poly on the back and trying to decide which color the 8 should be. Might leave it natural for now.

Don't forget
🦷 |
The color should be the same as the siding or the same as the blue on your cock.
|
|
Where's the flag? How will he know you have outgoing mail?
|
Oh, right. I keep forgetting to take a picture of that. Inside the lid, there's a flattish "S" and 2 low blocks. When we have outgoing mail, we tuck the letter under the S and leave the lid open. I'll get a pic later.
|
|
Pretty Cool.
|
Nice, I like the out-going signal. Is that common? We have big end of driveway Hill William boxes with flags here.
|
dunno, I kind of invented that. the bolt for the cock pull holds the S thing there. I was gonna put a spring under it, but the tension it has from the shape in combo with those little blocks holds the mail pretty snugly. I needed the blocks for the screws in the hinges cuz the birch board I used was only 1/4" thick.
Some boxes like that have hangers underneath for newspapers coming in and mail going out. |
I mail about two, sometime three pieces of mail a year. It wont be long until the only mailboxes are in museums.

I mail a shit ton more than that, mostly medical insurance claims that are, believe it or not, harder to file online than in hard copy. But I also live in a suburb with centralized mailboxes every block or so. Outgoing mail goes in the slot when we walk/drive to pick up our delivered mail.

Good set up Jim, being on the porch undercover.
I've got a big mailbox and if the truck is far enough away to fully swing the door I doubt the mailman could reach the back of the box. I attached a clip like the kind on employee badges to the inside of the door to hold outgoing so he opens the door and it's right there. Still have to use the flag to let him know in case there's no incoming. But quite often if it's something that isn't pressing I don't even bother with the flag. He's a nice guy and I try to make it as easy as I can for him. I figure if he likes me maybe he'll not deliver some bills. :haha: |
We hope the mailman approves of the box. Eventually, I'll be out front when he comes and I'll find out if he likes it.
Maybe get him to sell commissioned boxes to my neighbors for a lithe piece of the action. I can't wait to retire. Only 15 years to go. |
As a profitable sideline? Uh... tell me again how long it took to carve the 8 ? :lol2:

There's someone in my parents' neighborhood who makes neon house numbers, and there are a bunch scattered around. No idea whether it's profitable, or just a hobby.

In fifteen years, you'll be retired, maybe. But you'll also look back and wonder what the fuck, where did the time go? Where are my kids, they're not kids--whoa, etc etc. You have today, only. Live it now. Nice mailbox though. |
That's great advice. Sounds familiar

I have to get back in this head space as well at about 5 years out.

Nice situation. I'm feeling grateful myself.

Did he walk the kitchen beams?

I think so? Could have been banzai. Jinx posted pics in the pets thread. Banzai had darker orange ears.

Just another resource in the bag of tricks.

I experienced sciatica yesterday for the first time. Holy shit batman.
That fucking hurts. I have several theories on why. First, I tweaked my back on that side when the mulch came. Simply tossing the tarp over it. Was sore for a couple days, then was better. Then I spent 3 of the next 4 days shoveling, carting and spreading it (7+ yards). Was sore, but no real pain. Took 2 or 3 days slow due to weather, then power washed front and back porches in one shot (4-5 hours). Over the next 2 days my back started getting stiff right where I had tweaked it at the beginning of this long paragraph. Thinking that as muscle re grew, it crowded that nerve and inflamed the area. Yesterday, it got so tight, I couldn't sit on a chair. Started getting little muscle spasms in my right thigh. Kind of like a twitching eyelid... Or like bubbles coming up from boiling water. Pop pop pop....(these went on all day... Like having hiccups for 12 hours)... Tried walking it off. Then the pain started to bloom in my right femur. Got to the point where it felt like a bad tooth ache inside that whole leg. It was far worse than the back pain. From about 1pm to 9 pm I could not stand up for more than 4 minutes. Ice packs, heat, ibuprofen, aleve, pot, rum... Nothing helped. Well the pot helped me disassociate from the pain, but it was still thrumming. Finally, at Amandas insistence, I laid on my back on the rug, and put my calves up on the ottoman for as long as I could take it. That actually got me around the corner. I could sit up again. Still pretty shaky and sore this morning, but much much better. Another theory is that I haven't had my wallet in my back pocket every day, and Thursday I went out, and had it there. I have shit to do and it's a gorgeous day. This is inconvenient. |
Sounds brutal. I’m sorry. I hope you continue to improve.
|
Does sound brutal. When I've had muscle spasms in my back due to misuse or overuse, only prescription muscle relaxants brought any kind of relief. Couldn't sit, couldn't stand, couldn't walk, wished I didn't have to breathe, completely shitty.
Get well man. |
Sciatica sucks

(Awhile back I had them in my whole body for months, leading to a slew of tests from my neurologist to rule out new seizures, ALS, MS, etc. before we finally got them under control. Now I only get maybe 1-2 twitches per week, plus I get them steadily in both thighs for about 20 minutes after I exercise.) |
I've been hospitalized for sciatica twice. It's a bitch. Being allergic to morphine was the main reason for being admitted, though because muscle relaxant and pain relief are all they can do. So you did all the right things, hope it stays feeling better.
When all this is over, see someone about your back, because it's one of those things that can increase in frequency and severity, but sometimes there are exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles that prevent whatever has moved and is pressing on your sciatic nerve from doing so. Good luck! |
Thanks. I've got a neighbor that dealt with this for 9 years until he got surgery. My dad had a bad bout of this recently too.
I'm hoping that mine will miraculously go away and never return. |
Oh, man. I hope the pain eases soon.
|
Dang. Take care of it man.
|
No miracles so far. I need to figure out how to deal with the pain. Yesterday, I could sit in a chair, and even get up and walk slowly around. The interval decreased from about 5 minutes to about 2 where I could get up and not feel that ache begin in my hip socket. Once that started, the femur started up yelling at me, then the knee, then into my shins within about a minute. Pain level just below that panic inducing pain of a Charlie horse... But in the bone. Deep in there.
Hobble back to my chair, sit down like I'm dropping a bag of flour... Then it would sing for 3 or 4 more minutes, and slowly fade. The relief is lovely. Makes you want to get back up and see how long you get. Had to just gut it out to take a shower. Toward the end of that, I was rinsing with the hose thing, and had a moment of no pain abruptly. Then it came back when I got out. If I tuck my ass under and bend my right leg a bit, it eases. But I can't stand around like that. Ok in my chair at the moment. I'm debating just trying a day of light activity like mowing the lawn, and seeing if that helps, or will I do more damage. If this goes on with no improvement 2 more days, I'm going to have to go see a chiropractor or something. I've got another month before we go back to work, I think. I really don't want to spend it idly trapped in my chair. |
Have you taken any pain meds?
|
Aleve, generic ibuprofen, thc. Not much help. Though my pot is mostly sativa. Indica would be better.
It's not constant pain though. Just a dull ache when I sit, but fire alarm pain after moving about. Best thing has been sitting the fuck down again. Things I read say to try to keep moving. So I did that yesterday, but also sat in a chair a lot. This morning it hurt a bit more and faster than yesterday morning. |
alternating between a little light moving around and resting should help.

Woe is me...
^No one got the irony (sigh).^
I guess I'm the only one here old enough to remember that quinine and its derivatives, like chloroquine, are muscle relaxants. Decades ago, quinine and vitamin E (to increase circulation) were combined to treat restless leg syndrome and sold over the counter. The quinine dose was about 1/10 the therapeutic dose used as an antimalarial. Overdosing on it as a muscle relaxant could lead to the same adverse side affects and risks associated with the dosage for antimalarial use; so, the FDA restricted it back in the '90s. It's still used, by prescription, to treat chloroquine resistant strains of malaria which have mutated so much that they've come full circle and are susceptible to the original quinine treatment again. I thought it was funny that the drug Trump touted as a possible anti-coronavirus treatment; but, was largely a big fail, could actually be applicable in this situation. These days, no doctor would prescribe it as a muscle relaxant though. |
It's not a matter of age, it's obscure trivia in a specialized field that others haven't a clue about. We all have bags of shit nobody else would recognize if they stepped in it.
|
Try alcohol. In particular vodka.
Minus the pills. And +5 on the thc. |
