Hello stranger,
Can you tell us where you've been?
More importantly,
How ever did you come to be here?
Though a stranger,
You can rest here for a while.
But save your energy,
Your journey here is far from over.
Come the sunrise,
We'll descend through Judgement Valley
And weigh your worth
Before her majesty, the Verde River.

No direction but to follow what you know,
No direction but a faith in her decision,
No direction but to never fight her flow,
No direction but to trust the final destination.
You're a stranger til she whispers you can stay.
You're a stranger til she whispers that your journey's over.

Weigh your worth before her majesty, the Verde River.

The 'Candy' thread sent me off on a trip down memory lane and I landed on Pulp's 'Common People'.

I'mma post the audio with lyrics, even though the performance is a huge part of the appeal - because I suspect there may be bits that would not make sense to an American ear without the words on screen. No need to embiggen - they have helpfully made the text large enough to view in thread :)

Undertoad 04-05-2018 04:03 PM

^ always bears revisiting

xoxoxoBruce 04-05-2018 10:46 PM

They sure take the fun out of slumming. :(

BigV 04-19-2018 09:21 PM

I was born a little too late to be a hippie. Goddammit.

Second place was rocker. Tha's cool.

Blues rock, if you please, with extra blues.

That's Jarvis Cocker. He doesn't sound so much like Bowie to me - especially in that song the accent is completely different - you can hear the London intonation very strongly in Bowie whereas Cocker has a more flattened Sheffield sound - the rhythm of speech is different too, which I think feeds through into the way the lyrics are written.

No doubt very influenced by Bowie though.

I think this one is more like Bowie:

Motherfuckin' Joe Jackson. And the great Ben Folds for eff's sake! Give her a high five for me.

DanaC 04-21-2018 09:30 AM

Lil Griff has excellent taste.

Some of Cocker's solo work is really good too.

I'm not sure whether US and British use of this word differs or not - I know it's a much more commonly used word here ... but not sure if the meaning is slightly different. Just in case - in Brit use the word cunt as an insult (either a very serious insult, or an affectionate friendly insult between mates) is used for men as much as it is used for women.

A hilarious pair of cunts.

Amanda got me into Idol early this year. I've never watched it in previous years because every time I saw it on, they were doing songs I didn't know, and I didn't care about the contestants. This year, there are a couple I actually like. Knowing the back story and seeing the auditions is key.....

anyway. this chick is my favorite. I don't think she will win,. ,but she's got a really groovy voice, and picks good songs.

Maddie Poppe.

DanaC 04-24-2018 02:08 PM

Oh she's great!

Doesn't matter of she wins or not - no way she ends this competition without offers of a next step

xoxoxoBruce 05-02-2018 11:14 AM

Believe me, this kid is going places... ;)

Undertoad 05-02-2018 11:54 AM

Hey, it's Richard E. Grant!

Gravdigr 05-02-2018 12:55 PM

BigV 05-02-2018 10:09 PM

Schaaawiiiiing!

lumberjim 05-03-2018 09:46 AM

What was that from? I saw several celebs in the crowd. Is that David Copperfield? And the pasty white guy behind and right of Grant?

lumberjim 05-13-2018 11:01 PM

Greta Van Fleet. They've got lots of good LedZeppeliney groove. the kid's voice is dead on... but this one sounds more like Heart.

The fucking drummer, man. goes full Bonham at 3:45, but listen to the whole song.

DanaC 05-30-2018 11:17 AM

This should really go in the ear worm thread cos it's been in my head for the past couple of weeks but anyways:

If you have been living under a rock and haven't seen the video yet, definitely worth embiggening:

That was good.

Transcendent dream pop ~ gorgeous!! ~ takes a while to get going. Deeply layered, layers upon layers throughout.

Beach House is popular with the kids these days and their album "7" is making a lot of mid-year top album lists. For good reason.

Little girl, you could be loved
Little girl, you should be loved
The moment you say that you know
Is the moment you are

Beach House on "L'Inconnue":

SCALLY: Sometimes a song will be written in six hours, sometimes it’s three months. “L’Inconnue” has been being written for four or five years. Some songs are just like that.

LEGRAND: The French part [on “L’Inconnue”] started years ago. We always liked it, but we never found where it belonged. But some things are written at the time of the record and other things come back from the past and find their right moment. And some things never find their moment. That particular song is an example of something from the past that never found its right moment, but for some reason the world of 7 — with its kind of futuristic, psychedelic, sacred universe — just made it fit.

Griff 07-06-2018 05:22 PM

interesting trip, working on the whole album

Undertoad 07-13-2018 03:27 PM

"Cherry-coloured Funk" opens the all-time all-time allll-tiiiime classic Cocteau Twins album Heaven Or Las Vegas. 28 years on, it is recognized as their masterpiece.

If the lyrics seem indistinct and unrecognizable, that's the point of the band's entire catalogue. Bring to them what energy and meaning you prefer. I spend time away from the Cocteaus, and when I come back, the songs are different.

Oh yes, and, it turns out the kids who are fans of The Weeknd already know this song. Heavily sampled here (go to 1:18)

Undertoad 07-23-2018 09:29 PM

My son lately has been playing old music and the mmm mmm mmm song by Crash Test Dummies is one of the ones in the rotation. You remember the one.

Back in the mid 90s, my wife and I saw Crash Test Dummies at the original 9:30 club. Small, cramped place, but a lot of fun. Anyway, the Crash Test Dummies guy told us the story of the "mmm mmm mmm mmm, mmm mmm mmm mmm" lyrics. If you listen to the song, it just a bunch of depressing anecdotes. A boy whose hair turns white, a girl with lots of birthmarks forced to change in front of everyone in the locker room, etc. Everywhere you hear "mmm mmm mmm mmm, mmm mmm mmm mmm," it was supposed to be "fuckin' shitty, fuckin' shitty."

So my wife was telling the kids about it at dinner tonight, and maybe 10 minutes later there was some slightly depressing topic that came up, like the kids had a big mess to clean up in the kitchen, and I hummed "mmm mmm mmm mmm, mmm mmm mmm mmm." Everyone laughed, and now we have a shorthand that I think is going to catch on for stuff like that. We'll see.

Griff 08-13-2018 06:08 AM

Ha! Brilliant.

DanaC 08-14-2018 04:45 PM

I've been on a bit of a uk rap kick lately

Griff 08-14-2018 05:57 PM

Lil G loves to sing that! Brush yo teeth!

Undertoad 08-24-2018 10:53 PM

The really slow, deliberate tempo they chose makes it the most unlikely hit single ever.

And it never woulda been a hit single... and win a Grammy for Record of the Year... if Clint Eastwood hadn't put it in "Play Misty For Me", 3 years after it had been released.

But the rest of the story is... the record company offered to re-record it at a faster pace for the movie. Clint Eastwood said, no, that slow tempo is what I want.

Can you imagine this being a hit single today. No you cannot. In 1972 it was #1 for six weeks.

The upright bassist is Ron Carter and man those bass strings just ring out to me

xoxoxoBruce 08-24-2018 11:35 PM

It scores with every lovesick youngster who admires their crush from afar.
Today youngsters don't do that, they go for it.

Old Specials romp I have always enjoyed - a cover of an old old old song

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as you wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself

Sometimes you forget how brilliant that is. Love the reaction, so heartfelt.

DanaC 10-12-2018 03:17 PM

Yeah. I think that's part of what got me so hyped on reaction vids. Rediscovering music that's so familiar to me it's become almost mundane,

Here's a change of pace:

A 2011 song from my favourite rapper
