One more - this one is not a track, though. It's a Fire in the Booth pre-written freestyle rap followed by one of the most moving pieces of poetry I've heard.

He's also a self-published and highly respected historian and scholar and founder of the Hip Hop Shakespeare Company

* the intermittent explosions are the DJ registering his approval :p

Pre-written freestyle?:eyebrow:

DanaC 10-15-2018 04:11 PM

From wikipedia:

Quote:

Original definition[edit]
In the book How to Rap, Big Daddy Kane and Myka 9 note that originally a freestyle was a spit on no particular subject – Big Daddy Kane said, "in the ’80s when we said we wrote a freestyle rap, that meant that it was a rhyme that you wrote that was free of style... it's basically a rhyme just bragging about yourself."

[7] Myka 9 adds, "back in the day freestyle was bust[ing] a rhyme about any random thing, and it was not a written rhyme or something memorized".[6]

Divine Styler says: "in the school I come from, freestyling was a non-conceptual written rhyme... and now they call freestyling off the top of the head, so the era I come from it's a lot different".[8] Kool Moe Dee also refers to this earlier definition in his book, There's A God On The Mic:[9]
There are two types of freestyle. There's an old-school freestyle that's basically rhymes that you've written that may not have anything to do with any subject or that goes all over the place. Then there's freestyle where you come off the top of the head.[10]

In old school hip-hop, Kool Moe Dee claimed that improvisational rapping was instead called "coming off the top of the head",[11] and Big Daddy Kane stated, "off-the-top-of-the-head [rapping], we just called that "off the dome" — when you don't write it and [you] say whatever comes to mind".[7]

Referring to this earlier definition (a written rhyme on non-specific subject matter) Big Daddy Kane stated, "that's really what a freestyle is"[7] and Kool Moe Dee refers to it as "true"[12] freestyle, and "the real old-school freestyle".[13] Kool Moe Dee suggests that Kool G Rap's track 'Men At Work' is an "excellent example"[12] of "true"[12] freestyle, along with Rakim's "Lyrics of Fury".[14]

Gravdigr 10-15-2018 04:40 PM

I figured there was some difference in definition of 'freestyle'.

DanaC 10-15-2018 04:55 PM

Most of these guys can also do the other kind of free style. Certainly the older ones.

Kano, one of the original grime artists did a really good Fire in the Booth that wasn't off the top of his head, but was penned like an hour or so before recording on a last minute booking

I really love this. I get maybe 70-80% of what he's saying, but he sounds awesome.

xoxoxoBruce 10-17-2018 06:06 PM

Percussionists...

BigV 10-23-2018 11:10 PM

that was quite enjoyable, thank you!

Percussionists...

*plus a little surf guitar* Oh yeah.

Griff 10-29-2018 09:03 AM

I'm going to have to get away from media for a few hours. This expresses where I'm at with society right now.

C'mon, now...How good could it be?

Griff 10-29-2018 02:41 PM

Which video is ppv?

xoxoxoBruce 10-29-2018 02:45 PM

When I put up Limey's video, the first time I tried to play it they said equipment problems try later. The second time it said must pay to watch. The third time it worked.
Griff's is working now.

Gravdigr 10-29-2018 03:15 PM

Yep, Griff's vid plays now.

Gravdigr 10-29-2018 03:17 PM

Things are getting more difficult.

Griff 10-29-2018 04:24 PM

Youtube was having some issues earlier...

Undertoad 11-23-2018 04:20 PM

I may have linked it before, but no song represents autumn more than this one. The Clientele, Bonfires on the Heath.

The sparse slide guitar wailing, the simple piano here and there, it's all just so amazingly in place.

Allmusic says about the whole album "...the most perfect autumnal English pop record imaginable... a feeling of melancholy and quiet but also a pastoral peacefulness that is very soothing"

that applies to this track 110%

xoxoxoBruce 11-25-2018 03:11 PM

Cordell Jackson, the rocking granny was playing rock & roll guitar before anyone invented the term. Being a grandma she naturally could cook. :haha:

Gravdigr 11-25-2018 11:17 PM

Go Grandma, go.

BigV 11-28-2018 11:47 PM

I came across this video shortly after we watched Sharp Objects on HBO.

Both are entrancing, both feature street skaters.

Stylish, good stuff.

Dorothy Dandridge and Paul White strut their stuff in A ZOOT SUIT, an engaging Soundie from 1942, made for a coin operated jukebox called Panoram.

DanaC 12-07-2018 04:08 PM

Appropriate time of year for this I think:

That was awesome!

SonofV attended his Senior Prom in a Zoot Suit. The watch chain was about six feet long.

A simple explanation of Harrison's while my guitar gently weeps.

Gravdigr 12-13-2018 01:54 PM

Vintage Trouble

Saw them on Austin City Limits, and they had a sound like 60s soul, Stax-type shit. And they were rocking it. I haven't found anything by them as good, but this is close:

Gravdigr 12-13-2018 02:22 PM

This one is very Land of 1000 Dances-ish:

If you've never heard of Tommy Bolin or Private Eyes, please set aside some time to give it a serious listen. Tommy Bolin was a true genius, gone too soon.

Yes, on this one. Most are from the = to the end, but when they add shit after the part you want with the &xxxx, knock that off too.

I'm having a really shitty day, but this made it better, great harmonies:

That's one of your oldest blues tunes, right there.

A bit of a departure here...

The rap here is catchy but the video makes it great.

The lyrics are tough but no cop killing and the like.

Lyrics - X Gon' give it to ya

I first heard this on a youtube video background for about 5 seconds. It was so catchy I went to search it out.

It's looking like I'm 10 years behind the curve on DMX.

Gravdigr 03-15-2019 10:25 AM

War - Cisco Kid, on the Midnight Special, remember the Midnight Special? Loved that show.
