This is a modern Brazilian VW kombi bus. Probably less than ten years old.

The floor frame is pretty straight behind the front wheels.

My understanding of the VW buses made in Brazil is that they have coolant running from the front black radiator back to the engine, they have a gear shift lever between the front seats that connects to a fairly small rigid rod that runs under the floor back to the transmission. Maybe if it is an automatic transmission, that's actually a wire and not a metal rod. Not sure. There are brake lines that go back there to the brakes, and if it's a manual transmission, there is a clutch cable running back to the clutch. Other than that, there is not much of importance under that floor.

Perhaps there was a minor field repair done to get it to run, or perhaps there just wasn't any damage to those under-floor systems.

xoxoxoBruce 10-13-2017 01:15 PM

Yes, good investigating glatt.
I wondered if the throttle cable or gear selector was jammed because in the GIF/Video he was moving pretty fast for the condition, although it may have been sped up. So if they replace that missing window and patch the side door, they can apply compressed air and it will pop back into shape. :thumb:

The joys of late night travel on the London Underground.

Darts fan filmed sliding down Tube escalator in viral clip viewed 10m times 'I had 10 pints and thought, why not?'

Tube safety bosses warn against copycat pranksters

After downing ten pints of beer at the darts, it probably seemed like a good idea.

But as these images show, Freddie Andrews’s decision to slide down a Tube escalator backfired in spectacular style.

Dressed in a football kit, the 22-year-old from Tonbridge, Kent leapt on to the metal chute between two escalators as a prank.

But it quickly went wrong as he first smashed his private parts into one of the emergency stop buttons - while his friends laughed hysterically.

As he gathered pace, he then slid another 40ft before hitting a metal sign and was catapulted headfirst into the opposite escalator, landing at the feet of a surprised commuter.

The stunt at London Bridge station on Wednesday night was filmed by one of his friends

Asda worker Mr Andrews said he instantly regretted the stunt as he began sliding down, but was unable to stop himself.

He told the Standard: “I was that drunk - I’d had about 10 pints - the escalator was free and I thought, ‘why not?’

“It was faster than I thought it would have been. But as I was sliding I couldn’t stop myself and had no choice.

“I did regret it.”

Mr Andrews and friends were on their way home from watching the PDC World Championships at Alexandra Palace.

He said at the time, he did not feel any pain because of how much he had had to drink.

However the next day, he was barely able to walk.

“I was so drunk I did not feel a thing until I woke up yesterday and could not move.”

He added: “My family think I was an idiot. But now it’s happened they think it’s really funny.

“I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else though.”

The video, which has gone viral, has been viewed online nearly 10 million times.

One viewer called it “the best thing I’ve seen in 2017.”

London Underground has previously criticiseds people tempted to take the quick way down

A spokesman said: “Safety is our top priority and pranks like this are dangerous for not only those involved but also to other customers.

“We have frequent PA announcements reminding customers to be careful when using escalators, and we also run safety campaigns throughout the year to encourage customers to take care whilst traveling on our network.”

Hummingbird

Everyone loves Hummingbirds... yes you do.
They are like flying jewels, so pretty, and so quick, but alas they are gone so fast.
The obvious solution is to have a pet hummingbird, but they are hard to keep in captivity because of their needs.
And the truth is they are savage little assholes, vicious and aggressive.
But cheer up Bunkie, here's the solution, build your own.

How do you go about designing one of those? Is there a CAD program that has an animation mode so you can see how gears interact as you build up a complex system?

Happy Monkey 01-04-2018 09:06 AM

That wing movement in the last GIF is amazing.

However you do it, it takes 700 hours.

Make your own! Woodworking plans are available at http://www.derekhugger.com/colibri.html Colibri is a wooden kinetic sculpture that simulates the motion of a hummingbird in flight. Every element of motion has been completely mechanized, from the beating wings to the flaring tail. Intricate systems of linkages and cams bring the sculpture to life with a continuous flow of meticulously timed articulations. As each mechanism has been linked to the next, Colibri cycles through its complete range of motions by the simple turn of a crank. This project is my eighth woodworking design project and is by far the most complex project I've done so far. From start to finish, Colibri took me about 700 hours.

Clodfobble 01-18-2018 10:43 PM

That's interesting--normally on this kind of image, I default to one way, but with effort can make it spin the other way. But this one doesn't look like it's going in circles to me--as soon as her face goes backward, my brain says "I know I can't see through the backs of people's heads," and she's instantly forward-facing and going the other way. She just goes left-to-right, right-to-left, never all the way around.

xoxoxoBruce 01-19-2018 01:31 AM

But if I look at just the torso... alright boobs, I can see it, them, go all the way around.

On the full silhouette one, I can see both directions, but I have a very hard time switching. On this one, I can switch directions at will.

As a dial-up user for too many years, I always wonder about band-width or upload speeds or whatever.
Dumb question: Are all the GIF's on this page (and the other ones) always running? Do they take up download capacity continually? At what point are they shut off?

Happy Monkey 06-28-2018 11:46 AM

Once you download all the frames, your web browser is in charge of looping it; it doesn't keep downloading. If the browser is clever, it only plays it when you have that tab selected - but that would only affect the speed of the browser, not downloads.

That said, GIFs are one of the worse things for dial-up, as they do download automatically, while most video only downloads when you hit play.

But it does look cool. I expect to see it in a SF movie shortly.

(Perhaps even these prototypes, if the military decides the repair issue is too daunting.)
