I just watched Game of Thrones (season 1) on HBO on Demand and I'm HOOKED like the geeks and nerds that come here are hooked.

!!

That said, wolf, you're welcome to come hang out with me for a few days if you wanna - that old bedroom that son #2 was stinking up? It's a beautiful guest room now!

You're welcome to come on over to Ohio anytime!

wolf 02-02-2012 12:57 PM

Very sweet, but ... Ohio? I'm going to have to think about that ... ;)

kerosene 02-05-2012 02:49 PM

This was why I got directv last year. To watch this show. But I cancelled HBO back in June, because the free period was almost up. Maybe they have some kind of new deal going.

Salem 02-24-2012 10:16 AM

It's a nice show to spend an evening at home once in a while, but it ain't no big deal. Soap opera with swords. Don't you all find it a little bit ridiculous?

Griff 02-25-2012 08:27 AM

Started the last book last night, pretty intense.

Not in the least. But hey, not many here agree with me on much anyway.

A show? I thought it was a board or card game for kids??????

Spexxvet 02-27-2012 10:55 AM

I'm on page approximately 50 of the second book. Can't wait for the return on the show.

infinite monkey 02-27-2012 11:01 AM

Book(s)?

I thought it was a card or board game for kids???????

Happy Monkey 02-27-2012 11:17 AM

It is!

jimhelm 02-27-2012 12:30 PM

It would be cool to see them (Bethesda) do a Skyrim type game using Martin's world.

skysidhe 02-27-2012 11:18 PM

I am halfway through the second book and in good company with spex. I'm glad I am not the only procrastinator.

About the second book. I keep waiting for something good to happen. I keep reading for the dragons, and hoping the little starkletts will grow up ( as opposed to getting killed )and kick some butt.

Griff 02-28-2012 05:22 AM

Lil' Pete confiscated my kindle to read the first book so now I wait...

It's the Song of Fire and Ice. Or Ice and Fire. Or Whatever.

Happiness is an illusion.

Don't become attached to any characters, or to your opinion of any characters.

Now you've done it. Either let Lil' Pete have that Kindle or get another one just for her. You can have a book on up to five devices on the same account.

I don't know, since we don't get HBO I usually don't have any awareness of when a show is originally broadcasting. But generally speaking, once the DVD is released to the public, it is soon available for rental as well. The major licensing issues are usually over whether Netflix is allowed to stream the data, or can only mail out physical copies (which forces them to buy more copies themselves, if they want to send it to enough people to keep them happy customers.) Currently they're not saying whether they'll stream it or not, but we'll get the discs if we have to.

jimhelm 03-07-2012 03:00 PM

Wow. I got it already. And with the free shipping option!

One day! Awesome.

wolf 03-07-2012 03:34 PM

It is nice to live near the warehouse, isn't it?

Clodfobble 03-26-2012 05:25 PM

Woo! First DVD arrived today! I know they've had PR problems, but I don't give a crap what anyone else says. Netflix is awesome.

classicman 03-26-2012 06:27 PM

6 days till season 2 begins!!!!!

DanaC 03-27-2012 05:54 AM

Ohmigod, ohmigod, ohmigod.

I am rewatching the first series with Ma. We watched ep 1 yesterday. Ma loved it. I actually enjoyed the first ep better this time around. last time I saw that on a really shaky connection, streaming at low quality.

Clodfobble 03-27-2012 07:41 AM

For anyone who has seen season 1 but did not read the books beforehand: did you feel overwhelmed by character information in the first few episodes, or were you able to keep it all straight? We were impressed with how much backstory they were able to pack in, but we already knew the whole story.

I didn't connect that one of the guys in the very first scene was the guy "Iced" by Ned. Other than that, I think I was good. Since, I've read the first, and half of the second books.

Going to a friend's GOT party on Sunday. I hope to rewatch the entire first season before then.

Clodfobble 03-27-2012 07:51 AM

I thought it was funny that the three intro guys got full biographies in the Special Features section. They were non-entities, guys in red shirts who were just there long enough to die.

In general I was very impressed with the casting. Jon Snow was the only character at all who wasn't exactly like I'd pictured him.

Spexxvet 03-27-2012 09:00 AM

The ages are different. Book Robb is 14 IIRC, tv Robb looks 16 - 18. Book Bran is 8, tv Bran is 12. Or there abouts. Theon, on the other hand, is much older than Robb, in the book, but they are contemporaries on tv.

Warning: above ages are all from memory, and may not be accurate, when performing a reality check, fictionally speaking.

Spexxvet 03-27-2012 09:02 AM

Sansa is prepubescent in the book.

Clodfobble 03-27-2012 10:15 AM

I'm pretty sure George R.R. Martin wouldn't let them go changing ages willy-nilly, this is supposed to be the most true-to-the-book adaptation of any story, ever.

TV Robb may look older, but I think they're still claiming he's 14-15. He and Jon are supposed to be roughly the same age. Sansa is definitely 13 in both book and TV, though she is technically prepubescent as well since she hasn't menstruated yet (this being a key plot point over whether she can be married yet.) I remember thinking when reading the book that 13 was not impossible, but on the rare side, for not having her period yet.

TV Bran is declared to be 10 in episode 1, right before Jaime does his thing. Can't remember how old he's supposed to be in the book.

I did have it in my head that Rickon was supposed to be, like, a preschooler, but I think that's me misremembering, because it seems pretty shocking to have aged him up to 6 in the show if he wasn't that age in the book.

wolf 03-27-2012 10:19 AM

They had to make several of the characters older in the show so it wasn't kiddie porn.

jimhelm 03-27-2012 10:39 AM

I heard that they aged them all 3 years for the sake of propriety

Clodfobble 03-27-2012 11:17 AM

AH HA!

Quote:

One big departure from the books, however, is the "aging up" of some characters. It's one thing to read bedroom scenes about a young girl traded into marriage with a savage warlord but quite another to film it for the screen. Even by HBO standards.
...
Emilia Clarke, the actress who plays the young bride, Daenerys, is 23. Two of the actors -- Kit Harington as Jon Snow and Richard Madden as Robb Stark -- are 24 years old. Their characters in the book are 10 years younger.
Okay, but, the character in the TV show isn't supposed to be 23. Her older brother is hinted at being 17-19, making her 16-18.

Quote:

The Stark sisters of Winterfell, Sansa and Arya are 11 and 9 in the first book. Actresses Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams are 13 and 14, respectively.
Wow, the actress who plays Arya is 14, older than the actress who plays Sansa? That's kind of nuts.

jimhelm 03-27-2012 01:00 PM

Arya is one of my favorite characters, and the actress is my favorite. I think they hit my mental images mostly.

King Robert was a miss... He should have coal black hair and bright blue eyes.... an integral part of the story.... and Varys is Lex Luthor.... Jon Snow looks too pudgy and emo... He's supposed to have 'the look of the wolf about him' Oh, and I had Hodor with blond hair in my mind. But the rest... yeah.. pretty close all around.

Blueflare 03-27-2012 01:46 PM

I'm pretty sure all the characters are two or three years older. In one scene with King Robert in the first season they referred to the overthrow of Aerys as being 17 years ago, whereas in the book they refer to it as being 14 years ago.
I agree they made them all a bit older so it wasn't so weird. Danaerys was born after King Aerys died, which makes her 14 in the books. But in the show she'd be more like 17.

DanaC 03-27-2012 02:08 PM

Having not read the books first, I really loved the king. Thought he was great. One part dour Yorkshireman to two parts Henry the 8th.

You know that little girl had hardly done any acting before this? In fact I think it was her first role.

Trilby 04-01-2012 02:07 PM

Cannot wait!!!

I'm rooting for Danaerys and her baby dragons.

wolf 04-01-2012 09:43 PM

Wow. Very different from the book.

Yeah, they skipped (so far) all of The Imps intrigue in King's Landing. The interaction with Craster was about 500 pages/half way through the second book.

What's the perfect thing for your 20 year old daughter to make for a GOT season premier party?

Trilby 04-02-2012 09:32 AM

I love it!!!!!! That is sooooooo cute! How'd she do it?

Spexxvet 04-02-2012 10:37 AM

2 pound cakes, rice krispy treat, and covered it with fondant. It took her about 7 hours. She cut out each scale individually. And it tasted yummy!

It was a big hit, and I'm very proud of her. Maybe Cake Boss is hiring.:)

Clodfobble 04-02-2012 11:08 AM

That's amazingly cool, Spexx.

piercehawkeye45 04-03-2012 11:20 AM

Good episode. Huffington Post actually has power rankings for 'Game of Thrones'.

So glad to see season 2! Not much action in the first episode, lots of talking ,but I suppose that's inevitable due to all the storylines it had to pick up. Looking forward to the next one.

I haven't seen it.

I don't want any spoilers.

But.

Is there a female character named ... "darius" or something like that? Long wavy blond hair, dresses in furs?

Yes - Daenerys Stormborn. I love her character.

DanaC 04-09-2012 07:33 AM

She and the Imp were my two favorite characters.

Best line from last night

Lord Janos: Are you questioning my honor?

Imp: I'm not questioning your honor Lord Janos; I'm denying
its exsistence!
