Best 'volunteer helpdesk' story
I did once have a friend who was working for one of the Kennedy clan who I gave some free support to. She asked me to quote a billable rate but I ended up doing it for free since it only took 5 minutes.
My best unpaid/unofficial support call was for a coworker who was also a mainframe programmer. He was on oncall support and had a laptop and modem for the first time. He called me at about 2am and woke me out of a sound sleep. I was, however, able to diagnose his problem in less than 30 seconds. Him: Rich, it's ****. I'm trying to dial in to **** and I can't get a dial tone with the modem. Me: Where are you? Him: Upstairs. Me: Where's the computer? Him: In the room with me. Me: Where's the phone you're using. Him: Here in the room. Me: How many phone jacks are in the room. Him: One. Me: If the phone's in the same room as the computer, what's the modem plugged into. (click) I was left holding the phone. I was wondering why I wasn't having any troubles with accessing the cellar, even right after the move (since I have Comcrap) when it hit me -- I run my own dns. That explains it. :rolleyes:
