That's what I thought. In fact, I thought I'd misread ZenGum for ZippyT :D.

oops wrong thread - sorry

ZenGum 12-11-2009 11:49 PM

You ignorant rabble, don't you know Hynpotos was the high priest of Jerusalem when the first menorah was made? :p

I thought I was being nice by not pointing out that a menorah should have seven arms; The Lord was very specific about this. I guess pedantry (after Pedantos, Hynpotos' uncle) would have suited the cellar better. :D

Fuck Hynpotic, he's passé.
Quote:

The Jews found only enough ritually pure olive oil to light the menorah for one day, but the supply miraculously lasted eight days until a new supply could be obtained. In celebration of this miracle, the chanukkiyah has eight branches for eight candles or oil lamps, none higher than any other. These lamps are not to be used for secular purposes, such as providing the sole source of light or heat for the room. The Hanukkah menorah has a ninth branch for an auxiliary candle, the shamash, that, by shedding its own light, keeps the other candles from inadvertently serving any purpose other than their ritual one. The shamash is also used to light the other candles. The holder for the shamash candle is generally distinguished in some way from the other eight, traditionally being placed higher than the others, and often in the center, with four of the other candles on each side.

Guess I should have stuck to nice!

From the font of all knowledge:

Quote:

* Menorah (Temple) - a seven-branched candelabrum which has been a symbol of Judaism for almost 3000 years and is the emblem of Israel. It was used in the ancient Temple in Jerusalem.
* Menorah (Hanukkah), a nine-branched candelabrum used on Hanukkah
I only knew about the standard Menorah... (what is the plural? Menorim?) I didn't know about the special Hanukkah model.

Thanks Bruce!
