Well put, OC.

Personally, I have abandoned the idea of defending my faith. I have just reached the point where I'm comfortable with my religious beliefs and seek neither to spread them nor abandon them.

If I convince someone to share my beliefs - if I succeed in spreading my faith to a lesser intellect - is he really now "faithful" or just "sold." If I am confronted by a superior intellect who can lead me to doubt or question my faith am I to abandon it?

Even as a Christian, it makes my skin crawl when someone asks me "have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?" I just can't escape the feeling that the guy is trying to win a set of steak knives in a sales contest. If leading by example does not prompt others to express an interest in my faith then either the example I'm setting isn't good enough or it just wasn't meant to happen.

you don't see your assumption that someone else's convictions are the result of blind devotion, lack of any sort of rational evaluation,

you don't see that as offensive?

I can't intelliegently beleive in any of the gods in existense currently... how sad am I? Sometimes I sincerely wish I could believe because often I could use one. No offense to those of you who believe... sometimes I envy your (blind?) devotion and faith.

Hey, sm, offense is in the eye of the beholder. Asylum apologized, twice. If you're determined to be offended, go right ahead. I read her posts, and I don't detect the offense you're unhappy about.

For me, faith is blind, in a way. It is belief in things not seen.

She said she envies your devotion, your faith. To her it's blind because she can't see what you see. To you it's rational evaluation. Why would you take offense at someone's desire to know what you know, to have what you have? Don't be offended, be enlightening. Asylum lacks hope, belief, trust, all things you have. Share.

Honestly not wanting to annoy you... but ... if this thread is annoying you then it MIGHT be the case that you have not resolved the issue satisfactioraly in your head. Otherwise why are you annoyed?

Oh and while i'm here, faith (in t' NIV(one particular translation) bible) is 'being sure of what you hope for, and certain of what you do not see'

The bible tells us to have reasons for our faith, and be ready to give answers to questions about your faith.

RELIGION loves blind faith. God doesn't.

You have blind faith in the bible. ;)

OnyxCougar 07-03-2005 10:13 AM

No I don't have blind faith in the bible.

Troubleshooter 07-03-2005 10:32 AM

How can you be a literalist creationist and not have blind faith in the bible?

Barring all of the other contradictions anyway...
