Antique LOLcat

Attachment 20615

Icanhascheezburger reports the following:

Quote:

This captioned cat picture postcard was found by Tracy Angulo in a Seattle antique store. Tracy tells us that the photograph is from 1905, which would make this officially the oldest cat picture with a caption, AKA lolcat, that we’ve seen.

The differences are clear. Proper grammar and a more formal tone was in vogue back then. But the similarities to modern-day kitten struggles and lolcats are amazing. ALL CAPS is still cool, but most importantly, she also no can has cheezburger. More than a hundred years later, all that’s changed is the spelling.

Evekitteh, we hope you got a good dinner.

Undertoad 12-03-2008 07:52 AM

This is an awesome find, and should be an IotD.

The happiest cats on earth.

Pie 12-11-2008 03:39 PM

We saw a show about cats with that guy's house featured in it on Animal Planet the other day. Badger and I looked at each other and agreed to give it some serious consideration for our monsters. :D

ETA: the guy agreed that he had probably spent $50k on the project, and lowered his home's value by $50k as well.

Shawnee123 12-11-2008 03:40 PM

I don't have that kind of space to do something like that but wow would my cats love it! If you proceed, take pics! Oh, and this would be in your new house, right? :)

xhaos01 12-11-2008 04:15 PM

My parents were going to try something like that but then realized that it would never support the weight of their dogs... and it would have to

Yeah. Maybe something... simple, in the rec room. We'll see where the insanity takes us. ;)

Elspode 12-11-2008 06:25 PM

About twenty years ago, my ex and I had this silly ass cat named Pandora. We lived in a place that had a very narrow wall that separated our living room from the kitchen, and the wall terminated at the opening to the kitchen. This left a flat vertical surface about 4" wide, covered with a trim board. I used to do drugs in those days, and it occurred to me that I could make a hell of a cat thing there.

I built a roughly 2.5' long, 1' high, 1' deep box out of flakeboard, cut a hole in the bottom big enough for the cat to get through, and covered the whole thing in carpet remnant. Then, I wrapped carpet remnant around the exposed wall edge, and mounted the carpeted box up against the ceiling. The end result was a very integrated "cat tree"; a large wall area that the cat could literally climb up, and a box for her to enter, sleep in, or whatever. She used to actually climb up there and then *hang* by her front claws from the carpeted bottom of the box, like some goofy furry gymnast.

It was awesome.

Shawnee123 12-12-2008 07:56 AM

I got home and my cats were waiting for me, tapping their little paws impatiently. I asked "wassup" and found that somehow they had seen this pic and wanted to know where their set-up was. Probably one of those rotten punk river cats down the street showed them. My cats are so naive.

Shawnee123 12-12-2008 11:02 AM

I remember that picture of your cat, lj, and then I was thinking how my cats would love a beam like that to jump on.

How does (s)he get up there? (Sorry can't remember cat's name so not sure if it's male or female.)

lookout123 12-12-2008 11:09 AM

I want to see more of your house LJ.

jinx 12-12-2008 11:22 AM

Dennis jumps from the top of the cabinets onto the beam. He also climbs up the posts and gets stuck in the cubby's on the other side of the big cross beam, which you can kinda see here

That did make me lol nirvana...

Pie 12-12-2008 11:25 AM

I looove your house, jinx! Nice wide planking on the floor.

glatt 12-12-2008 11:28 AM

It is a good looking house. You guys should do one of those youtube video tours like a few of us did a while back. Grifftopia was amazing too.

jinx 12-12-2008 11:31 AM

Thanks! If we ever clean it again maybe we will do a tour thing... it all needs to be painted too...

lookout123 12-12-2008 11:35 AM

No, the rules for the house tour were no cleaning. Now let's see the house.

jinx 12-12-2008 11:44 AM

Ok, here are some outdated pictures. Most of the furniture and wall decorations have changed

Shawnee123 12-12-2008 11:46 AM

Oh yeah...Dennis! I should have remembered.

I love your house, you guys. Old homes have such personality and character, and yours is just beautiful.

Pico and ME 12-12-2008 11:48 AM

I waaaaaaaaaaaant an old home.

Jinx, yours is gorgeous!

lumberjim 12-12-2008 11:50 AM

do you want the 4" of water that is in the basement right now, too?

Flint 12-12-2008 11:53 AM

I'll trade you for my wobbly foundation and rusting, galvanized water pipes.

Nirvana 12-12-2008 11:54 AM

I love the look and feel of your house! It should have its own thread! :)

OH, right.

Yeah, I still want an old home with the wood work and big hallways and doorways and bunches of rooms and big kitchen.

Sorry about your water. That sucks. We had that a few years back in ours, too. It was a 100 year flood that shouldn't have resulted in water in our basement. It came from the sewer system backing up. Gushed right out of the toilet...8 inches worth. Silver lining though...we have a totally new downstairs now.

Sump pumps work wonders and are easy to install.

lumberjim 12-12-2008 01:46 PM

I have most of what i need to put one in. I'm just a horrible slug, and haven't actually done it.

Arrrgh. We have a bit of a loose gutter. (Needless to say I didn't discover this till the last couple days.)

The loose part is immediately over a basement window in a window well. The rain just ran down the roof, down the side of the house, and into the basement. :smack:

Loved that one Shawnee. I'll have to go chack myself now.

Shawnee123 01-22-2009 07:21 AM

Jesus called and said he wasn't going anywhere near my bookcase. Dust and that whole cleanliness next to godliness thing.

And my cats would eat him.
