A senior fellow at the Institute of Nonexistence

Quote:

It was among the juicier post-election recriminations: Fox News Channel quoted an unnamed McCain campaign figure as saying that Sarah Palin did not know that Africa was a continent.

Who would say such a thing? On Monday the answer popped up on a blog and popped out of the mouth of David Shuster, an MSNBC anchor. "Turns out it was Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, who has come forward today to identify himself as the source of the leaks," Shuster said.

Trouble is, Martin Eisenstadt doesn't exist. His blog does, but it's a put-on. The think tank where he is a senior fellow — the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy — is just a Web site. The TV clips of him on YouTube are fakes.

And the claim of credit for the Africa anecdote is just the latest ruse by Eisenstadt, who turns out to be a very elaborate hoax that has been going on for months. MSNBC, which quickly corrected the mistake, has plenty of company in being taken in by an Eisenstadt hoax, including The New Republic and The Los Angeles Times.

Now a pair of obscure filmmakers say they created Martin Eisenstadt to help them pitch a TV show based on the character. But under the circumstances, why should anyone believe a word they say?
They shouldn't.

As reported by another entity we should never believe: Fox News.

glatt 11-13-2008 03:39 PM

The article is confusing to me.

We know that somebody leaked information to Fox news.

We know this guy claims it was him.

We know some sloppy news agencies fell for his trick and reported that it was him.

But we don't know if he really was the guy who leaked it to Fox news.

In other words, is his trick that he leaked information to Fox News and then legitimately took credit for it? Or is his trick that somebody else leaked the information to Fox News, and he falsely took credit for it?

What we need is a response from Fox news. Is he their source?

MSNBC is the one that made the claim - not Faux News. Still shows that the "news these people are expected to be reporting isn't always real. The LA Times was also mentioned as an outlet that bought into the BS.

What glatt said.

For one who constantly tells us to not believe anything in the news, you sure do post a lot of news articles. Half your posts are news articles with very little added but the admonition to BEWARE.

Right. So we know MSNBC got it wrong. Maybe Fox did too. Or maybe Fox's report that a McCain aide said Palin was confused about Africa is from a real McCain aide and is actually accurate.

classicman 11-13-2008 04:14 PM

Yeh I dunno - seems like Fox didn't name their source cuz they couldn't verify it. Didn't prevent them from going with the story though. Not sure which is worse. The two outlets weren't the only ones fooled. My intent was not on the story itself, but more the underlying fact that a lot of what we get from these outlets is not news. I prefer other outlets that usually have more integrity.

Yeah, they have egg on their faces for sure.

Having now read all 1,276 pages of Questionable Content, well... dang they're cute. No wonder there's some Rule 34.

The home of Pokémon, Digimon, Luann, and 9 Chickweed Lane porn. There is stuff in there that was clearly drawn on a dare. It includes the funniest picture of the Grinch known to modern man.

Right here. No, it is NSFW, but it cannot possibly be said to create either a hostile or harassing work situation either.

Ibram, always keep this in mind: my whole life is a hammer that smashes silly stereotypes. The stupider they are, the finer I pulverize 'em.

Types With Fist was a character in Dances With Wolves. Sheesh, do I have to tell you people everything?
