Good eye Zipp. You must do that "what's different in these photos?" thing a lot. I also noticed that the rivet in the handle just behind the trigger is round on the mk3 and on the 2245 it is D shaped.

I'll take them both. Can I get them gift wrapped?

Yea, I own a short action 300 win mag, basically a necked down 300 win mag. A Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation gun. I love it. I have never shot anything with it. It was more of a dream gun. My dream was always to go on an elk hunk. So I bought the gun on a whim. I put a $600 scope on a $800 gun. I am sure it can do the job but it sits in the gun safe waiting for the day. Anyway, the rounds are about $38 a box of 20. That was my only point. Cheers.

Merc, a guy I met the other week at Physical Therapy just left for an Elk hunt. I need to find out what business he's in.

TheMercenary 06-02-2011 09:41 PM

Man, a guided hunt is expensive. $3500 to $5000 for a hunt. I will do one someday.

Flint 06-02-2011 10:18 PM

A guy at work today (a physical therapist, coincidentally) was having a going away party--he is moving to Alaska. We got to talking about manly man stuff and he told me about a local guy he knows who makes traditional longbows. I would love to get a traditional English longbow. Welsh archers could kill a combatant in full plate armor from 60 yards. With the Welsh archers, the English were known to defeat forces of ten times their size.

TheMercenary 06-02-2011 10:20 PM

Shot placement.

But hey, if you miss a charging Grizzly than what?

I never go into the back country without a gun. Shit, I don't go to downtown Atlanta without one either.

Flint 06-02-2011 10:22 PM

I believe at one point every English male was required to practice archery on Sundays. So, yeah. Shot placement.

TheMercenary 06-02-2011 10:47 PM

Add about $8000-$10,000, for a lot of places. For the biguns anyway.

You can do it yourself for a lot less in Eastern KY. Largest herd east of the Mississippi.

So, I've been getting into this martial/projectile frame of mind lately. Not sure what it is, last summer it was boat fever which I thankfully recovered from before suffering any lasting damage.

The other night I watched some sort of discovery channel thing about paleo/neo lithic weapons and such. So I figured that a fun thing to tinker with as part of my ongoing efforts at earning my black belt in procrastination, would be making some of these things.

Today I made a simple sling out of a scrap of leather and some 4mm climbing cord. I went out into the backyard and very gently, with my better shoulder, shot a walnut sized stone all the way across my yard, my neighbor's yard and up onto her corrugated steel roof. The fucking thing FLEW and when it hit it sounded like the hammers of hell. Glad no one lives there and glad I didn't put out a window. That would have sucked.

Check out this guy from Spain. the second video he is slinging a Cestros, it looks like a crossbow bolt.

Idle hands and all that...

Special sling glandes with aerophonic properties. They are physically based on bull-roarer acoustics.

From wikipedia:
Quote:

Almond shaped leaden sling-bullets were typically about 35 mm (1 3/8 in) long and about 20 mm (3/4 in) wide weighing approximately 28 g (0.99 oz). Very often, symbols or writings were moulded into lead sling-bullets. Many examples have been found including a collection of about 80 sling-bullets from the siege of Perusia in Etruria from 41 BC, to be found in the museum of modern Perugia. Examples of symbols include a stylised lightning bolt, a snake, and a scorpion - reminders of how a sling might strike without warning. Writing might include the name of the owning military unit or commander or might be more imaginative: "Take this," "Ouch," and even "For Pompey's backside" added insult to injury, whereas dexa (catch!) is just sarcastic.
:rotflol:

some things never change...

TheMercenary 07-02-2011 08:21 AM

Holy shit, that looked like it was made out of poured lead shot. That would frigging hurt.

footfootfoot 07-02-2011 08:28 AM

On this show I saw, they measured the force of a 1 oz chunk of lead thrown from a sling at something like 95 mph. Then they shot it at a ballistics dummy skull and it was buried about 3 inches inside. I'll say it would hurt.

TheMercenary 07-02-2011 08:35 AM

And if you just sharpened the edges slightly it should do the trick. My problem would be actually hitting the target I was aiming at.

TheMercenary 07-02-2011 08:37 AM

I guess they put their initials on them so they would know who to go after if you actually got hit by one.

"Let me see that thing! Hell, that hurt."

"Oh, that was thrown by Ralph, he's toast."

footfootfoot 07-02-2011 09:33 AM

Just for grins I ran some numbers using the Taylor Knock Out Factor formula comparing the .308, .22LR standard velocity, and a one ounce lead ball .75" dia. shot at an average speed of 75mph or 109fps

.308 = TKO of 18
.22 = TKO of 1
1oz sling = TKO of 5

But as you say, actually hitting the target would be a prerequisite.

Here's the chart form the article on TKO:

Quote:

450gr .45-70, 1250fps =36.48

325gr .480 Ruger, 1350fps =29.77
300gr .405 Win, 2000fps =34.71
260gr .454 Casull, 1800fps =30.22
255gr .38-55, 1650fps =22.84

TheMercenary 07-02-2011 09:41 AM

Cool chart. Another reason that LEO's changed to the .40 S&W I would guess. Interesting also the power of the 45-70. I always have kept that on my short list of guns to get next.

I read a passage from a war correspondent in Vietnam, at the battle of Khe Sahn. The VC/NLF/Enemy whatevers had attacked at night, one of them was wounded and screaming about 150 metres outside the perimeter.

Some Texas-type stolls up to near the reporter. He is wearing a low-slung holster on his hip with a cut down grenade lancher - stock removed, probably barrel shortened and such. He listens in the dark for a while, draws the launcher, loads, balances it on his left forearm, fires once ... boom ... screams stop.

The USA may or may not win the war, but they're usually leaders in the badass-ness competition.

I watched a passage from Apocalypse Now, at the bridge Do Long:

Quote:

The boat moves up river to a surreal stop at the American outpost at the Do Long bridge, the last U.S. Army outpost on the river. The boat arrives during a North Vietnamese attack against on the bridge, which is under constant construction after being repeatedly destroyed by the NVA hiding in the forest nearby. Upon their arrival, Willard receives the last piece of the dossier from an officer named Lt. Carlson, along with mail for the boat crewmen. Willard and Lance go ashore and they make their way through the trenches where they encounter many panicked, leaderless soldiers. Willard asks a machine gunner who the CO is; the gunner replies "Ain't you?" As they talk, a North Vietnamese soldier hiding under a pile of his dead comrades screams obscenities at them. The gunner finds his friend, Roach (Herb Rice), who is armed with a tiger-striped M79 grenade launcher and with it promptly dispatches the NVA soldier. Willard decides it's not worth it to find the CO and he and Lance return to the PBR. As the boat departs, the NVA launches an artillery strike on the bridge, destroying it.
This movie is overflowing with USA bad-assery.

Nope, they are deploying select members of SOF back to theater. They have put so much money into training and making these guys good at what they do they are letting them go back on AD. Depending on your specialty they will let you stay and make you non-deployable. I knew a Doc on AD who had a partial arm amputation that stayed on AD to retirement, he was an endocrinologist.

Quote:

So far, the Army has treated nearly 600 service members who have come back from Iraq or Afghanistan without an arm, leg, hand or foot. Thirty-one have gone back to active duty, and no one who asked to remain in the service has been discharged, Arata said.

Most of those who return to active duty are assigned to instructor or desk jobs away from combat. Only a few _ the Army doesn't keep track of exactly how many _ have returned to the war zone, and only at their insistence, Arata said.

To go back into the war zone, they have to prove they can do the job without putting themselves or others at risk.

One amputee who returned to combat in Iraq, Maj. David Rozelle, is now helping design the amputee program at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington. He has counted seven other amputees who have lost at least part of a hand or foot and have gone back to combat in Iraq.

The 34-year-old from Austin, Texas, said he felt duty-bound to return after losing his right foot to a land mine in Iraq.

ZenGum 08-07-2011 09:05 PM

So, if a chap loses a foot to a landmine, and gets a good replacement, and goes back on active duty, and gets wounded in his artificial foot ... does he get another purple heart? Is it logged as equipment damage?

If he damages the foot, is it damaging military property or a self-inflicted wound?

Don't mind me, just being silly.
