Here's an interesting bag, 'cause you never know when you'll meet something that needs hammering.

They might recognize your imprint after a few brawls though, maybe a nice anonymous Thor's Hammer?

Kidding aside, I assume the Harley has a strong throttle return spring? Pretty nice-looking grips. I like the skull endcaps. |
You object to the throttle boss? I had it on the 03 Yamaha and loved it. The biggest issue I had on the big trip last year was my hand going numb. I do have the throttle return knob but it takes a minute to tighten as you're riding. I just have to change the angle of my wrist to use this thing.
|
I misread your post, digr. There's no spring. There are two cables with little brass thingers.. There's a name for them but it escapes me at the moment.... You adjust the forward cable to increase or decrease the return strength. Took me a bit to figure that out. Once you have the grip attached, and throttle cables adjusted, you loosen the two screws on the end of the grip, and adjust the angle of the throttle boss.
The clutch side installation was the scary part. You have to glue that on. The brake side just slides on and gets held in place by the switch housing. Removing the blue grip on the clutch side required the use of my dremel with a cut off wheel. I sliced it open like a fish. Then I threw it disdainfully into the bin. Installing the new grip: 1. Sand the bar clean of the old glue. 2. Sand the whole area with 80 grit to make a receptive surface for the glue 3. Clean with windex, clean the inside of the grip. The grip is thick soft rubber inside. 4. Take a deep breath 5. Remember to align the skull the way you want it 6. Sploodge the glue into the grip, immediately schmear it as far in and thoroughly as you can manage quickly. 7. Cram the grip up the bar as quickly and smoothly as you can. The instructions say you have 6 seconds once the air is gone before the glue sticks. I got one good shove and it didn't move again. Fortunately, it's on far enough that you can't tell that I could have maybe got it 1/4-1/2" higher up the bar. The rigid chrome part of the grip is such that there is no wobble. I also replaced the battery and air filter. I got a lot done today. |
"disdainfully"? Are they that bad functionally, or just the appearance you distain?
|
Esthetic mainly.
|
More esthetics:

That's looking really good.
|
I'm trying to find a gas door cover that matches, but I'm having a hard time of it. I also want mirrors... but I think I'll save that for my birthday list.
|
Gas door? Gas Cap?
|
This. They make one for the road glide, but I can't find one for this bike. The skull is called the Willie G.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...432befba21.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...46493f944c.jpg The gas cap is under that door. You unlock it with the key, and it comes open toward you. The actual gas cap is just a black plastic screw on type. |
I have a ring that looks like that skull, but it has a turquoise 'gem' in its left eye socket. I'm thinking that I'll try to find some glass gems that will fit the various sizes, and glue them on. Or maybe just paint them in if I can't.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...979ea72d48.jpg |
Or maybe glue an eyepatch over the empty socket.
|
googly eye!
|
With a monocle.
|
They make the skull medallions you could put on your fuel door.
|
Installed a luggage rack today
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...1a12c298b4.jpg And decals until I get it painted http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...2ea1d9907d.jpg |

That's the shifter linkage mixed with the badges. The convex shape of the fuel door won't allow one to be affixed there, but I can put one on the center console just below the door. And one on the back of each saddlebag. |
You need one thick enough to grind relief in the backside for the fuel door curvature. But that's a lot of work to get one more of something you've got plenty of.

Cowboys!

I'd make a Cowboys joke, but, I'm a Bears man, so...I'll just be over here.
|
Duh, Bears. ;)

The cam chain tensioners need to be replaced. Also, I broke the cam chain guide while inspecting the cam chain tensioners. It took me 5 hours to remove the exhaust system and foot boards. Because I fucked around and had to go get a couple new tools....
So the Harley is is disarray for now. I'm gong to leave it apart for now and get all the shit I want to do to it done. Needs new shocks, wind shield, and and and... I'm up to about $4300now all told. Once I paint it and do the cam chain tensioners, It's going to owe me something like 7k. That's a hair more than its retail value. I just need to convince Amanda to let me sell the Yamaha next spring, and I'll be ok. |
Quote:
I turn my back on this thread for one minute.... That you're posting is what I'd consider a good sign .... OK. I'll read the rest now. |
Yeah but, much of what you're are doing isn't necessary, it's personalizing and making it new, what I'd term discretionary spending. I'm not being critical, there's certainly nothing wrong with your approach, I'm just clarifying it was still a super bargain.
But selling Amanda's Yamaha? Hmm. ;) |
And now that you have the pipes off and the cover off, you can really polish into those crevices you couldn't reach before, but that you could still sort of see.
[/evil bastard] |
yup. been doing that as I go. Getting to know the bike at the same time.
|
|
But then it all has to come apart again to paint it.
|
I'm thinking I'll just leave it apart. Gonna trailer the bike up to a tech near Allentown next week. I'll get the seat by then, and can take the body parts to the paint shop. I just need get the tank and those fenders off now. doesn't look too hard.
|
guy needs the tank to stay on, so I will have to wait to do the paint.
|
I thought the timing chain had failed while underway and precipitated an accident, with the windshield and fairing diaplaced, oil running out, etc.
This is better. |
Yes it certainly is. Good thing I used words too.

This is what's inside the fairing http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...41fe2d0d0d.jpg New horn cover, shift linkage and levers, peg. |
A skull with a trump hairdo. Don't forget to save the screws. :haha:
|
Took it to get the cam case fixed today.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...7689a04bc9.jpg New shocks being installed too. |
Did you know roof racks are responsible for 0.8‰ of light duty vehicle fuel consumption in 2015, corresponding to 100 million gallons of gasoline per year?
Looking at that picture I can tell your highest priority, like mine, is MPG. ;) I see you've got a drug dealer's black plate, I have one on my '57. |
That's actually the one with the train on it. Preserve our Heritage.
And I used an entire tank today going to Slatington then Eagle and back home. |
My bad, I'd forgotten about the train plates, I don't see many around anymore. Of course that may be because it's getting harder, and less worthwhile, to chew through the restraints.

I'll tell you one thing... That vanity tag on the back of the bike cost $76. When I got the SMRT tag, it was $35. Pa has increased title fees, lien fee, there's a new BS county fee.... and now they gouge you for a vanity tag. Pricks.
So, the inner shoe was all but gone. The tech said I had about 3 more rides left. Attachment 56354 Good thing the guys on the HD forum were such hammers about checking it. The cam run out is only .002" which is awesome for a 53k motor, and the lobe and cam journal look fine. Attachment 56355 The guy that's doing the work is a forum member that does side work, and has the respect of the other members. When he offered his help for parts cost and 1/2 the dealer's labor rate, I jumped. At this rate, I may have it back next Weds! My seat is finally shipping this Friday. It's coming together. |
Excellent, glad you found somebody who knows what they're doing and isn't an asshole. I could never understand the design of those guides, unless they have the mindset they're designing motors for garage queens that will never get that many miles. With the technology and materials available now, they could do much better but I guess there's no profit in that.
|
You can convert it to a gear driven cam. S&S sells it for $700. Then you need to do rods, tappets, oil pump, etc. That's what the local guy wanted $1650 for. If I was planning to keep this for another 50k, I'd probably have done that. I see 3 years on this, and then I should be keeping enough of my money to trade it on a new Road King.
|
I'm waiting for the autonomous models, with machine guns. :haha:
|
He's done with the cam chest rebuild, exhaust is on, shocks too. Just has the pushrods and heat shields left, plus the test ride. Possible that it's done Sunday.

Prompt service, that's a good sign.
|
Yeah, dude is legit. This isn't his job, and as cheap as he works, I have to assume he just enjoys doing it. He's actually an Investigator for the county. Wears a glock on his belt at work. The quickness tells me he's done this enough times that he just knocks it out. Whereas, when I work on it, I spend more time scratching my head and looking things up on YouTube, than I do actually turning wrenches.
|
Maybe it's part of his job, wrenching undercover to catch hot bikes or parts.
|
Looking awesome Jim.
|
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...05b2021ecd.jpg
Almost done. He should be through with the pushrods about now, and then just testing and adjusting. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...719c7e9fc6.jpg |
Picked it up today. It's faster. It's louder. Don't know why, but it is. I have a couple new projects now, while it's down for paint. The fairing mounts need repair, and I need to replace the front motor mount. New gaskets for the console, new bolts for the windscreen, and blue LED lighting.
I wish I had a month off to concentrate on it. |
Of course you do, toys are funner than work.

I had to look a third time to confirm it wasn't a cop. This was one of those 3 wheelers with the two wheels in front, so it had a lot of real estate up front for the big star. |
I don't like those Spyder things. They look kind of cool, but they handle like a snowmobile.
I've altered the paint plan by now.... Not going to put a star on the tank.. Just going to do it Midnight Blue with matte finish and the Wille G skull in white on the tank. |
Good move, the star would lead to no good. Besides the cop thing, there are plenty of non-cowboy fans, who are real serious about it.
