I almost brought a kitteh home the other night, though.

Bartender's neighbor's sow cat had kittens, but, the can opener's kid (5-ish) wasn't about to let go of any of them.

The one I had picked out was a gray bar tabby (I call 'em jail cats, because of the gray bars:)) w/half a tail. Was gonna call him Bob. Maybe Stumpy.:lol2:

My last kitten died and I couldn't continue my thread. I was going to show him growing up, but it just tore me up. Here I am the tough or maybe not so tough biker guy. Last evening on Family Feud the question was something like 'Name an animal described as busy.'

This one dumbass answered 'Tiger, Steve.' Yeah, busy as a tiger.

When Steve (Harvey) came around to the same guy a second time on the same question, he answered 'I'm going with cat, Steve.'

Cat. Literally the laziest animal on the planet. Sleeps eighteen hours a day. Yep, the busy cat.

Our latest catquisition. He's a five year old Egyptian Mau. We named him Mau (not very inventive, right?). In this photo taken by Tree Fae, I am pretty sure he wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to draw him like one of his French girls.

Sleeping in the bird bath. Mine find a way to the roof or on top of the carport.

That is one handsome feline.

My 17-year old cat keeps aggressively wanting to escape outside the house and wander around. We live out in the country. I think he's looking for a place to lay down and die. He's very old, doesn't have much muscle mass left.

A few days ago he got out and we couldn't find him. I thought he escaped into the woods and we'd never see him again. I told my kids.. sometimes very old animals want to find a quiet place to lay down and go to sleep. And sometimes they want to go to sleep in a quiet place, and have it be the last time they go to sleep.. and not wake back up. "Do you understand?" I asked. They did.

Eventually he came back inside. We fed him some chicken.

I cried.. a lot.

I cried because he's the oldest friend I have around. I've known him longer than my wife, my kids, longer than every single person I know who lives here in my new home state of Oregon.

I cried because, after my wife left me and I was living alone, miserable, in a high rise apartment in Portland, working a remote IT job and having no human contact, he was the only one who was there with me through it all. He would lay in bed with me when I was depressed.

My bond with him is deeper and more enduring than I can even put into words.



I've been preparing for this for about a year now.

We got a hamster, a couple of rabbits, even another cat. That's to soften the blow for the kids. But it doesn't do anything for me. When he dies I will be losing a friend that has been with me through two marriages, three states, my entire career, the birth of my children. He's been a constant in my life since I was in my twenties.

I lost a 17-year-old kitty a few years ago. I still think about her every day. One of the kitties she left behind mourns for her all the time - wandering around the house crying/looking for her. (She has another playmate, but he doesn't seem to miss the old lady the way Zoey does.)

Now that the remaining two are getting on in years, I worry that they'll be gone soon, too. Had a scare last month when my crazy boy kitty (Spike) suddenly started losing weight. Turns out he has asthma and allergies. Which cost me about $500 all told.
