Hey Monkey, you're in the top 3 now. |
Cool, thanks!
Here's the build in progress: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5529/...c3cb2d380a.jpg First I made 35 triangles, then taped them together into 3 strips and a big and small triangle as shown in the top left. Then I taped the strips around the big triangle, as shown top right. Then I closed the strips into loops, and put the small triangle in, opposite the big one, as in the bottom left. I did that 4 more times, and taped them together into a loop, in the bottom right. All of that was interior tape, so finally I wrapped it on the outside, which truly strengthened it. Then I continued, adding 15 more of the bottom left units. |

done again
|
I just moved into fourth, but I need to be in the top three to get to the next round of judging.

looks like you can only vote 10 times per ip address per day

I was taking a bunch of pictures for the contest, and Google automatically grabbed them and turned some of them into wiggle-3D images.
|
I had no idea they did that. I need to file that away for future use.
|
Yeah, I ended up somehow enabling Google backup of images on my phone, and Google collects them and does random stuff with them.
Anyway, here's a view while I was wrapping it, once I had put all the pieces together with internal tape. On this, and some of the wiggle-3d images, you can see thread betwen the arms. I later determined it wasn't necessary, and removed it. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5557/...394dc5b622.jpg |
Have to admit, there's some very clever and skilled people in this contest.
|
Two voting days left!
I don't like my chances. |
I'm voting as fast as I can open new private windows for each vote!
|
Heh, thanks!
|
So guess what?
I won! I guess all the paperwork has to be in before they announce it, but they notified me, and I've submitted my signed release form. :celebrat: |

Congratulations, that's fantastic! I voted, but not as often as I would have liked, I'm so glad you won. That was an amazing piece. What happens to it now?
|
Congrats, HM. I voted too, except when I forgot. So glad you won.
|
Go, go, Happeh Monkeh!!

They finally officially announced!

Less ambitious:
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5570/...ca6250974b.jpg It's made from this tape, and I can't imagine for what use that tape is intended. It's pale pastel with 10-15 layers, and completely invisible with one layer. Why would you want (unless you're me) colored tape where the color is too pale to see? |
does it do weird stuff under uv or black lighting maybe? or maybe they DID make it for YOU!
SteveF didn't like it. ( the only review gave it 1☼ ) he didn't realize it would be sheer. i guess he means clear. |
Maybe. I just ordered a blacklight bulb. I'll see if it does anything.

Kikkerland Neon Invisible Tape
Neon-noun - gas exhibiting an orange-red glow when placed in a high voltage electric field. ------ adjective - extremely bright Invisible-an object that cannot be seen They should make up there mind. :haha: Damn, Amazon wants $9.16 for 6 rolls, but Kikkerland has 6 rolls for $5.00 with free shipping. Maybe a different size? |
I got it at the Container Store for $3.99
|
I'm getting ads for it on Facebook now
|
Heh, I remember one time I posted a link to the talking jigsaw puzzle, and I was seeing ads for it for weeks.

2014 Christmas Presents

I'd like to have a few of those cherries. Do you work on commission? They would be awesome hanging from the money tree on my desk.
|
Wish I could. The little fruits are approaching something I might be able to sell; the Cellar will be the first to know if I ever decide to do it.
|
Whoa! I really like the fruits, and the way they're packaged too. Very cute.
|
HM, those are impressive! I think they'd definitely sell, I see crafted stuff like that at markets in the city all the time. I like the 8-bit/Minecraft-y feel to them. Most excellent.
|
Cool!

The rhombuses have simply had their centers cut out, right? You're not joining hollow segments to form the tiles, right? I tried to imagine if the "hollow segments" were triangular in cross section or only "L" in cross section, and I think I see now they're "L"s with each leg of the L an edge of a given tile.
As for the method, do you make many tiles, then connect them together (duh, of course you do) but I mean when do you remove the centers? When they're separate tiles on your work surface or when you've assembled the happymonkeygagon? |
I made the rhombuses, then cut out the centers. Then I made the individual points, with 3 rhombuses each, with tape on the inside holding them together, and extending out to make tabs. Using those tabs, I taped the points together, and as each point was completely surrounded, I cut the center out of the internal tape on each rhombus of that point. Then, I wrapped it, and once it was fully wrapped, I went around and cut out the centers of the outer layer of tape.

Right on time I was thinking about these this week.

Nice, do you have a rough idea how long it takes you to make one like that? To some people that may sound like a dumb question, but I'd imagine you do that in more than one sitting, and could be multitasking so the time frame may be fuzzy.
|
Not entirely sure... Less than 6 hours, I think. I think each one may have taken 1.5 to 2 nights, but I'm not sure how long each session was (I'd be watching TV or the Youtube app, and keep going one more show/video until I got to a good place to stop.
|
Yeah, I figured you'd be multitasking, thanks.

For those of us who don't have HM's talent or patience, but would still like to amaze and amuse your guests, you can cheat. Thomas Houha builds cool dodads and sells them in kit form, so you can say, "Yes, I built it", with a straight face. ;)
This one, for example, is $32. Now back to the real talent thread. |
