I commented earlier that they looked like the terrapins I had as a kid...not realising that, other than one particular type which is terrapin to you as well, what we call terrapins you call turtles. Mine had red ears. They were probably the same kind as yours.
I checked on wiki and it says you also use 'turtle' or 'box turtle' for what we call tortoises. I didn't know that. |
Nice terrapins, UT
I'll upstage you with more doggie pictures as soon as I get around to taking some more. Gypsy has gotten BIG! |

beeeeUtiful kitties!
UT - #1) how weird to have turtles. #2) did you name them after Renaissance figures the way their Ninja brethern are? #3) IS your turtle oasis named, in fact, Terrapin Station? and if yes, why? #4) do they eat cheese? at all? |
Terrapin Station.
I do not understand. |
1) I agree, but these guys are fascinating me now. They are awesome creatures. I don't care that they're not that bright; that's their lot in life as reptiles, but the whole shell thing is really cool and how they swim with it is ultra-cool. Plus they're kinda cute-ugly if you know what I mean.
2) No, they are "Tiger" and "Moon". Tiger is the aggressive one, Moon is the laid-back one. I wanted them to have rather universal names because they will probably outlive me, if I manage them well, so they need names that will last. Plus, they can't be sexed for another 2-3 years... their names need to outlive that too. 3) Terrapin Station, SG, is the name of one of the more notable Grateful Dead albums. Their aquarium is not named that. Once I realized that they were in fact terrapins -- aquatic turtles, as opposed to their land-based brethren who are tortoises -- the name was the second thought that occurred to me. But that's the problem: it's too obvious. Everybody with terrapins will use that name. Therefore, their homeland shall be known as: Terrapin Depot. 4) Their diet consists of little miniature logs of compressed turtle food, which is the professionally-recommended diet. As a treat, they get a few dead, dried shrimp, which are about a cm long and really gross. Apparently the turtles have the talent to catch and eat feeder goldfish; I don't know if mine are big enough to handle that task, but I'm gonna have them try it soon. J is against the idea because it's cruel. I can't wait to watch them have a go at it. |
Make sure they're really and truly big enough to eat the feeder goldfish before you try it. We had a garter snake that ate goldfish, except once it tried to eat one that was just a tad too large, and it choked/drowned.

Dotty is ill
Dotty is now over 14 and her rear axel is giving her trouble. I give her ½ aspirin 2 times a day. Boy I really don't know what to do...http://cellar.org/attachment.php?att...1&d=1089328815

aw, buster! I am sorry about your sweet doggie but she has YOU to love her and take good care of her. I'm sure she loves you as much as you love her. :apaw:
|
Your first stop should be your vet.
Do as they tell you. depending on the weight of the dog, you should be safe in upping that to a baby aspirin or two twice daily. Try to stay off adult aspirin unless the vet agrees. No Tylenol!!! |
Maybe a heating pad?
