I have flown his flag many times before, to muted appreciation.
But was delighted to see someone had posted this clip from Seven Worlds Collide, which shows my hero Neil Finn with (hopefully) other people's heroes.

Watch it just for the roll call at the beginning. Not bad imo. No death metal stars though.

monster 06-03-2008 09:47 PM

The song drives me nuts, but my kids love it and I like the vid....

Sundae 06-04-2008 08:11 AM

I'm on a Neil Finn trip.
I won't apologise for it. The man is a masterful singer/ songwriter/ musician/ performer. And probably lots more!

I'd heard of this version of Stuff & Nonsense (cynic/ romantic that I am, my favourite love song of all time) but never heard it. To find this is delicious. If you like it enough to watch it through you'll like it twice as much.

"And you know that I love you, here and now not forever, I can give you the present, I don't know bout the future, that's all stuff and nonsense"

zippyt 06-15-2008 12:18 AM

Music with stills again, sorry.
Manic Street Preachers Roses in the Hospital

I chose this version over the others because it's the album version. In the chart version (i.e. the video) they replaced "We don't want your fucking love" with a repeat of "Roses in the hospital". Still sounds good - but for me it was the former line that blew me away. I was 18? 19? and I did want love - from anyone, anywhere - I craved acceptance and was desperate to find my peer group. To hear that line sung so aggressively in a song about mental illness/ self harm was a revelation.

Lyrics underneath if you're interested - the intonation can be confusing.

Roses in the hospital
Try to pull my fingernails out
Roses in the hospital
I want to cling to something soft
Roses in the hospital
Progressing like a constant war
Roses in the hospital
There's no one to feel ashamed for

All we wanted was a home
Now we are so strung out we wanna own
Like a leaf in the autumn breeze
Like a flood in January
We don't want your fucking love

Roses in the hospital
Stub cigarettes out on my arm
Roses in the hospital
Want to feel something of value
Roses in the hospital
Nothing really makes me happy
Roses in the hospital
Heroin is just too trendy

All we wanted was a home
Now we are so strung out we wanna own
Like a leaf in the autumn breeze
Like a flood in January
We don't want your fucking love

Roses in the hospital
This century achieved so much
Roses in the hospital
To make a voice no voice at all
Roses in the hospital
Flowers cannot express the loss
Roses in the hospital
Torn reflections of burnt out trash
Of burnt out trash

Forever ever delayed
Forever ever delayed
Forever
Forever

Forever ever delayed
(Independence is a game)
Forever ever delayed
(Credibility, I'm yawning)
Forever
Forever
(Rudi Rudi Rudi Rudi Rudi Rudi Rudi Rudi gonna fail)

Forever ever delayed
Forever delayed
Forever
Forever

Forever delayed
(The west scratches onto my skin)
Forever delayed
(Contagious like a suntan)
We never felt any sun, any sun
Rudi Rudi Rudi gonna fail

Speaking of Michelle Shocked. A friend turned me on to her music back in, I don't know, 1989? I like her voice and her style. Can't find Graffiti Limbo but here are a couple more off her "Short Sharp Shocked" album:

Ah Shawnee I love Michelle Shocked!
Never owned an album, but had them played to me plenty.

Funny, don't think I've ever even seen her before. She reminds me of Dana! I think it's the physique and the bakers cap :)

Apart from her remarkable playing skills, she is doing a very complex set of interactions with the controllable parameters of the synth. Her left hand is sequencing the preprogrammed drum patterns/playing the low register crunch guitar sound, her left foot is playing the bass line on the organ-style pedals, she is playing the guitar and organ leads with her right hand on the upper manual, and her right foot is controlling volume, pitch bends and patch changes on the other pedals.

I couldn't pick out the melody line with one hand, let alone do all the other stuff it takes to render that performance. Amazing. Bet she can pat her head and rub her tummy at the same time, no problem.

One of my "things I want to do someday" is to witness, first-hand, a performance on one of these large-scale pipe organs. Probably the most impressive musical instrument invented, to date.

Clodfobble 08-06-2008 03:27 PM

They're actually relatively common, I've seen people play on two different ones in my city and I wasn't even trying. Just figure out which churches in your area have them and attend a service...

Shawnee123 08-06-2008 04:02 PM

There's a big german restaurant somewhere in this state that is famous for its big organ. (heehee i said big organ.) I've been there but for the life of me I don't know where it was.

Flint 08-06-2008 04:11 PM

Dose the restaurant with the big pipe organ specialize in massive, swollen sausages?

Shawnee123 08-07-2008 05:33 PM

Yep, it's all beef-stuffed pork and pork-stuffed beef.

Stress Puppy 08-13-2008 11:59 PM

Brad Paisley - Whiskey Lullabye.

It's the live version, which I don't prefer, but I can't find the non-live so there you go.

Also, it's sad. And country.

Shawnee123 09-04-2008 10:39 AM

It's not youtube...but I had to share The Barenaked Ladies Bathroom Sessions.
I just watched Ed Robertson (swoon swoon swoon) singing my favorite When I Fall.

Whew. I mean, seriously!

Sundae 09-04-2008 10:47 AM

Ex-HM found Distant Sun on YouTube as one of the Bathroom Sessions.
It finally convinced him of what I never had been able to - that Neil Finn can really write.
