Wow. That's a crazy scheme.

You so funny amelican gurr

lumberjim 05-27-2016 08:09 PM

Installed a usb charger port.

And a lid

lumberjim 05-27-2016 08:11 PM

Fixed the broken fairing mounts
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...362b3bb397.jpg
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...2366c8a881.jpg

And installed a chrome heat shield that fills in an exposed section of rusty pipe.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...85dfbe097e.jpg

lumberjim 05-27-2016 08:13 PM

Also put heat wrap under the rear cylinder exhaust pipe heat shield. Where it goes under my left thigh. Gets really hot. Hope this helps.

lumberjim 05-27-2016 08:17 PM

Still working on the control housings. I lost a tiny brass ferrule that holds the throttle cable in. Have to wait for new to arrive.

Replaced the front brake lever... Got some stuff done today. I'm tired.

xoxoxoBruce 05-27-2016 09:48 PM

Wish I knew you had these repairs to do, I've got a shitload of aircraft grade aluminum extrusions, like L, square, round, Z, T, and X, shapes up to 8 or 9 inches long. Most excellent bracket material. :smack:

lumberjim 05-27-2016 11:09 PM

The fairing mount repair kit is made specifically to fix this issue. It's so common that there are several companies /craftsmen building and selling them. So far, there are no more structural repairs required... Knock wood.... I'll keep your inventory in mind though, should I discover new needs. I used cable straps to secure that usb port from inside... Was thinking about a metal bracket....

lumberjim 06-12-2016 08:07 PM

Vault moment

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...2c0f058445.jpg

Coming out of my back door... Had to run in and set the DVR to record Game of thrones....

Just noticed that life is pretty fucking good right now.

Spence is going to college... Ripley turning 16 on the 29th. Found her a car with time to spare.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...9de30d1297.jpg

I think she'll be pleased.

Plus, I have a partner that is more than willing to put up with my shenanigans. Yeah. Things are good.

Excellent! The vault is a good idea.

xoxoxoBruce 06-12-2016 09:00 PM

Life is good, plus you have the satisfaction of knowing you earned it... worked for it, worked toward it. You never know if a meteor will fall on your head, so enjoy to the max. The young lady is a keeper, she even let you sell her Yamaha.

lumberjim 06-12-2016 09:39 PM

Not yet she didn't. Fixing to go for a putt on that right now actually. Just need to rinse off.

I got the chrome control housings and button covers done. I left the start and horn buttons black. I don't know why. I like it though.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...f67b70b316.jpg

Oh, and new levers with little skulls on the ends.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...b8d530354d.jpg

lumberjim 06-12-2016 09:44 PM

Also began laying out the light kit. I went high tech this time. The kit has a central hub that hosts 9 individual light strips. It has a remote control and does neat shit. Like... If I wire it right, when I hit the brakes, all the lights go bright red... ... I'll update that job later. It's involved.

lumberjim 06-13-2016 12:39 AM

I rigged a bracket to hold the usb charger in place out of an old license plate.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...5fbd071e9a.jpg

Used excisting holes to bolt it in. Bent the aluminum to support the charger.

xoxoxoBruce 06-13-2016 01:18 AM

Gives it that homey touch. Not homie, homey. :haha:

lumberjim 06-17-2016 11:21 AM

Rebuilt the main fuse today

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...083d654f76.jpg

Intricate little arrangement

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...b2cf21bb85.jpg
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...ec40355c9e.jpg
The wires are too short to reach the clip on the fuse box cover, so I wire tied it to the harness. This bike has a lot of wire ties on it.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...198e197b43.jpg

xoxoxoBruce 06-17-2016 12:41 PM

Stuff like that is so important but such a pain in the ass to do. Knowing it's even a bigger pain to re-do makes it take even longer. :haha:
If you ever decide to sell it, this thread is a sales tool.

lumberjim 06-17-2016 01:35 PM

I caved in and bought a pair of 2X reading glasses the other day. Incredibly useful tool. I was able to see what I was doing.

I even replaced the pinch clamp on my new clutch lever at night. The clamp is smaller than a dime in diameter, and the holes at the ends are so small, I had to file down the tips of my smallest pinch clamp tool to get a hold on them.

The boy got his first paycheck today.

Clodfobble 06-17-2016 10:08 PM

I was about to ask where he's working, but you probably don't want to say the name... Is it food service? Some other kind of customer service?

lumberjim 06-17-2016 10:14 PM

It's a bar restaurant near his house. He's a dishwasher. Same first job as dad.

Well of course, if you were to sell in now you could rattle off chapter and verse every detail about the bike. But 10 years down the road, if you decide to sell it this thread is a record of how carefully you put it all together.

classicman 06-18-2016 08:47 AM

Congrats to the young lumber-man. That was my 2nd job. First was shoe sales... hahaha

Griff 06-18-2016 06:12 PM

My second as well, throwing hay the first.

Gravdigr 06-19-2016 01:12 PM

I've thrown the odd haybale here and there...

Dontchya miss it?

:D

xoxoxoBruce 06-19-2016 01:50 PM

Wear out a brand new pair of horsehide gloves in a week, hacking up hayseed dust at midnight, suddenly stop sweating in a 130 degree hay mow... nope, not a bit.:headshake

Griff 06-19-2016 02:36 PM

I miss swimming after but that's about it.

lumberjim 06-22-2016 11:27 PM

Today, I installed a Progressive Touring Link chassis stabilizer. A guy on the Harley forum I joined sent it to me for free. Said don't worry about the shipping even. I bought one of his County music CDs, and will mail him a gremlin bell in thanks.

This kit mitigates lateral movement of the swing arm, which can cause a dangerous wobble during high speed bank turns.

The kit includes a modified swing arm mounting bracket that adds an anchor point, an L bracket that mounts to the rear of the transmission case and adds another anchor point, and a dog bone style tensioner that lives between those two anchor points and let's you set the lateral position of the swing arm. The dog bone comes pre-set, and should fit. If it doesn't, you need to perform a chassis alignment. Mine fit fine.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...3b044e490b.jpg

What wasn't fine was one of the bolts that attach the swingarm mount.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...f0dc74b44c.jpg

Looks like it was already cracked, as there is a patina on the inside of the bolt halves. Probably dangerous.

I also changed the color of the bulbs in the small guages on the dash. I'll have to send the tach and speedo out if I want them to be blue.
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...07e7f7d0f5.jpg

xoxoxoBruce 06-22-2016 11:56 PM

Lucky you caught that swing arm bolt, that could have been tragic. I suggest you ask Harley about the proper bolt for that application, I find it hard to believe that's the proper bolt. See how the threads inside the hole are worn and rounded? That's because a shoulder bolt should have been used for that spot, having thread inside the smooth hole is a big design no-no.

lumberjim 06-23-2016 12:02 AM

One more note.... The Corbin seat I got needs 2000-3500 miles to 'learn' your ass. Miles equate to minutes in my mind, so I did some math. Assuming, somewhat arbitrarily, that the average Mph I do is 45 mph, 2000 miles comes to appx 44 hours.

If I get the bike back on the road by July 15th, that's only 4.3 weeks until we go for the long ride vacation dad's 75th birthday party trip. I would need to do 10 hours a week to break it in in time.

So I've been cheating. I put the lift under the bike and Jack it up just enough that it sits level. A board across the luggage rack simulates the rear fender mounting position. So I'm into my 3rd hour of preseason break in. I'm also using this time to work on some songs on the guitar so my dad and I can entertain the atendees of the birthday party weekend.

We rented a Manor in Lynchburg VA. The NC and PA/MD branches of the family will meet there in mid August. After it breaks up, Amanda and I will have 4 more days to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway again.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...8e32d3ce6d.jpg

So, it's weird to be sitting in my driveway or garage, on a skeletal motorcycle playing a travel size guitar

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...95a2e36540.jpg
... unless you know the back story.

... Ok, it's weird even if you know why I'm doing it. Meh. I'm ok with weird.

Here's the bolt

Can you elucidate on what you mean by the wrong bolt?

It's the right bolt. Part # 4752 7/16 1 1/4 hex head. I got a replacement at Lowe's.

This site : http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.....asp?make=hdmc

Is a huge help in finding part numbers. My bike is an 05 FLHTI. Vin code is FV.

You can order right from them, or use the info to find the aftermarket part by googling the part number.

Some stuff like bolts and wire connectors are priced right, but I got the $68 motor mount for $20 from Drag Specialties.

Went to see the spray out of the color and matte finish. What do you think?

It's a little lighter in the sun....

But I expect the seat is too. I think the luster is dead on.

We went kayaking today. Amanda, my sister Heather and her daughter, Spirt, husband Pat, and myself.

Just a 3 hour trip, and slow water, but I had a really nice time. It wasn't crazy hot out... The river was a little crowded.... But a good day. Finished the day a Victory Brewing. Good food, great beer, terrible service. It was his first day.... Yeah sure....

No, the brandywine river between Romansville and Marshalton. Gonna go again weds with Spencer, his girlfriend Hannah and Amanda.

Griff 07-06-2016 06:19 AM

It looks really nice. Big turtle day on the Susquehanna for us. Enjoy the boat time.

lumberjim 07-06-2016 08:19 PM

The painter called today. Everything except the tank is ready to go. The tank will be ready Tuesday. He wants to let that dry a couple more days and then affix the decals and clear over it. I'll pick the finished parts up at 0800 tomorrow!

Now I can start putting it back together! So of course it's 97° and humid as balls.

glatt 07-07-2016 09:42 AM

I hear ya. Hard to get motivated in this weather.

lumberjim 07-09-2016 12:21 AM

I spent the afternoon with the Harley

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...403e230986.jpg

Reassembled the rear fender and lights.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...9c297461d6.jpg

Installed said fender

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...4231b4ea1d.jpg

Put the inner fairing cap on just to see it. Looks weird, but with the tank on, I think it will work.

Checking it out with the seat on

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...88aa7bc552.jpg

The front fender was much easier to install.

Griff 07-09-2016 07:00 AM

That bike gonna be gorgeous. Great color.

lumberjim 07-09-2016 08:02 AM

It's a really weird color. It changes with the lighting. The first pic of the fender is how it really looks in person, but when you shine a light on it, it gets brighter. Reminds me of a shark

Griff 07-09-2016 08:39 AM

It looks like the accent color on my softtail mtn bike, white with that blue on the chain stays and decals.

Griff 07-09-2016 08:50 AM

Changes with the lighting as well.

lumberjim 07-09-2016 09:29 AM

Yes it does. The actual color is a Nissan under hood color for the 2005 Altima. Didn't have a name, just B16 or something

Griff 07-09-2016 11:24 AM

Is that how you picked it out, popping the hood on a trade-in?

BigV 07-09-2016 12:30 PM

I think he picked it out by recognizing it as the closest thing to Dallas Cowboys blue.

lumberjim 07-09-2016 03:22 PM

actually, no. I took the backrest to the painter. They have books and books of paint chips that have holes punched through them. I laid the chip over the blue part of the leather and it was damn close. Just a coincidence that it was in the Nissan section of the book. I must have gone through 5 books before I found that color without metal flake in it.

That WAS the original plan, but Bruce talked sense to me. Eagles fans would vandalize it if I put a blue star on it.

The color is pretty close to me Emmit Smith Throwback Jersey, though. I'll have to wear that when I ride it a lot.
