Sunset

1 Attachment(s)
I don't think we have a sunset thread, and I thought that as sunsets can be some of the most breathtaking visions in our lives, it might be worth creating one as I'm sure many of you have beautiful sunset pictures to share also.

This one that I'm opening this thread with was taken yesterday. Unfortunately I only had my phone with me, so that's what it's taken with. I was on my way home and there was a fair bit of storm activity about and it created this (what in real life was a) magnificent and eerie shot. To me it looked more like the begining of an alien invasion than a sunset, but maybe that's just my imagination.

Anyway, here it is in all its slightly blurry and nowhere near complimentary glory.

Pretty, Aliantha!

Here's one I took on a recent camping trip.

Sunset at Venice Beach

I had a rare day off on a business trip about 2 years ago. I attempted a panorama, which is difficult without a tripod.

I happened to be there on a Sunday, which was when the natives had a drum circle to welcome the sunset. It must have worked because the sunset showed up.;)

Pico and ME 10-23-2008 06:05 AM

Wow. Fantastic Rich. That second picture is striking.

@Ali...yours has a lot of drama in it and it brings Close Encounters of the Third kind to mind.

Juniper...very very pretty, soooo subtle.

Aliantha 10-23-2008 05:53 PM

Yeah, that's what I was thinking Pico, I just couldn't remember which movie it was actually from.

Actually Twin Peaks is nearby...and this is a view of part of it. Do you see the gorilla?

Here's the original. You can click on the magnifying glass for the full sized version. I cropped it to post here.

I took this on the way back from a rugby match in Columbia, SC. it was looking across some recently plowed peanut fields. Stunning. We got out and took about 20 pics as the sun set. This is a photo stitch of three.

These two were taken yesterday during my evening commute. I cross this bridge twice a day. I've posted other pictures with it in the frame. I like the contrast it displays here. Mount Rainier was tempting me to crash the car. I shot this over my shoulder, Annie Oakley style. No crash, but it might have been worth it.

xoxoxoBruce 12-06-2008 09:29 PM

Shit V, couldn't you have stopped some place safe?

TheMercenary 12-07-2008 07:37 AM

Wow. That pic with the Mt. in it is great. Well done.

BigV 12-07-2008 09:42 PM

Thanks guys. :)

xoB: I wish. Because the road goes along the surface of the water, there's a long low unobstructed view to the mountain. It's a perfect shot. I take pictures of it all the time. It's on my 2 o'clock heading east, which is fine in the morning. I can shoot through the windshield or the passenger window. Irritatingly, the mountain hides directly beind the A pillar of the windshield when the driver's seat is in the most comfortable position. Oh well. But that also means it's on my 8 o'clock heading home, like during this shot. I knew it would be glorious, the first picture (and the dozen I took before the bridge) were ample warning. But once on the bridge there is no stopping, and it ends in a tunnel, with no real easy exit to come back around for this view, at least I don't know of one. If I knew of one (and I'm certain they exist), I'd probably have to leave an hour earlier to get my pictures in.

mercy: Thanks! It is an icon of the region, in an area blessed with an embarrassment of riches of natural beauty. Did you know that this area is the only place in the whole country where you can stand in one spot and see three different National Parks? A show like this makes me humble and grateful to witness such majesty.

Just saw V's pic with the stack of lenticular clouds. Jaw dropping.

HungLikeJesus 02-05-2009 11:54 PM

That's not a stack of lenticular clouds - that's a close encounter of the second kind.

Sunsets are one of my favorites times to shoot. I love the twilight especially the wonderful deep purple and blue tones, like Maxfield Parrish pictures. That color is so hard to catch to. I have had some lucky moments with the orange range. The bright orange shot was done out side my allergists' which is on top of a hill. I came out at the right moment. Shots like that are why i carry my camera alwAttachment 21874

I bet, but we want what we don't have. I'd have to climb a mountain to see snow and sunshine like that and it's just not happening.

I know, I have posted it before, but still one of the best pics of a sunset I have ever taken...

Bullitt 12-07-2010 05:43 PM

The textures in the clouds are what make the picture really pop. Well done Merc.

TheMercenary 12-07-2010 05:56 PM

We could not believe it when we saw it. We were traveling the back roads home from Columbia, SC to Savannah when we came on it, you know like the key to a successful life, timing, position, and lubrication... anyway, it was over looking a plowed peanut field. I have about 5 or 6 others that show the sky as it evolved. They are all a bit different and just as spectacular. This pic was stitched.

skysidhe 12-07-2010 07:32 PM

wow, It's breathtaking.
