The Birthday Trip

The other day My Step son asks me "So what do you want to do for the Birthday trip ?? " Both the kids Bdays are the eng of Aug ( 29 and 31 and Mine is Sept 10 ) so we generally just do 1 big bday something ,
When they were smaller it was easy , the last few years we have ALL gone to Fla together , but as Mike said " its 30 for Jen and 50 for you , so we need to do some thing EPIC !!! "
That Damn neer brought a tear to my eye , I raised the boy right !!! And he was right , so we discussed a few options , all inclusive resort some where beachy , Cruise , and he reminded me that he and Jen have pass ports as well , we shall have them SOON as well !!!

So im looking for suggestions from the cellar's vast travel knowledge,
Where would it be cool to go for a week( ish) that is not toooo Stupid expensive ( $1k ish or less per couple )

Some where in the gulf of Mex May be out , Hurricane season ,
Caribbean possibly for the same reason
I mentioned Hawaii, and he countered with flights to Europe are actually cheaper , then i said with the economy all Fucked in Greece and Spain we MAY be able to find a deal where the exchange rate is Good (or GREAT ) and live like Kings and Queens for a week or so .

So what do Y'all think ???

glatt 11-26-2012 07:43 AM

Greece is nice. I'm picturing an island where you can hang out on the beach, or rent a moped and zipp around looking at the sites. Years ago, Greece was cheap. I don't know what it's like now though.

glatt 11-26-2012 10:41 AM

I just re read this and saw the $1K per couple limit. That's pretty tough for Europe. It will be $2500 per couple just to get you to the Athens airport.

What about Canada? Any interest in Montreal or Quebec? That's sort of like Europe and easier to get to.

footfootfoot 11-26-2012 11:25 AM

I'm not sure of prices, but go to the Azores! They are amazing. Or were 25 years ago. Especially get up into the back country of the islands. Some packages are around the $1,000 mark.

ZenGum 11-29-2012 12:51 AM

Greece and Spain are still on the Euro (unless I've missed something) so the exchange rate won't be great ... but prices should be very low, since no one there has any money to spend.

zippyt 11-29-2012 01:59 PM

Spain is out , we are talking about $5k per couple , so NOPE !!!
Im entertaining the thought of Yellow stone or a raft trip out west some where

Sundae 11-29-2012 02:37 PM

Yup, that's the problem I have with travelling to America - it's the initial fares that are the killer. Once in Europe you can travel dirt cheap, even though it's bargain basement conditions.

My cousin may be coming over from Oz in the New Year and once she gets to Paris (where she has a friend) she can get a coach to London for £9. That's cheaper than it costs me to get to London from Aylesbury!

When I was lottery-dreaming I was trying to work out how to see Sarge as well as the Philly Dwellars without paying airfare. Megabus, train travel and Greyhound are such bargains! You just gotta get there first.

All I can say is that it's not the location that makes the holiday (sez me who has been to Cuba, Sri Lanka, Egypt etc ;)) it's family and attitude. And you have good ones in each case.

Can't you go to Vegas and blow all your travelling money?
You might come back in a Lear jet. Or hitch...

Zippy, you never stuck me as the kind of man to be all afeared of some piddly little hurricane. Pffft.

Jamaica, mon.

zippyt 11-29-2012 05:03 PM

Oh Im ALL up for a Hurricane party ,
But the Kids ( the Whiny little so-n-so's ) don't want to risk it

footfootfoot 11-29-2012 05:32 PM

Dude, the Azores. I'm seriously serious.

Big Sarge 11-30-2012 06:29 PM

how about mississippi. you can choose between the hills, delta, or piney woods? it is like visiting 3 different states. or you can always go to disneyworld. they have some great packages

BigV 11-30-2012 06:35 PM

I'm not in Arkansas. But I do know that I've been a happy tourist in my own state a number of times. There's something to the term staycation. Or at least nearby. What's fun sounding in your area that other people like that you've never done?

footfootfoot 11-30-2012 08:45 PM

What about Tampax?

You can swim, you can bike, you can play tennis...

zippyt 11-30-2012 10:08 PM

BS and BV , I Travel around in my general area ( 100-200 mile radious ) verry reg , so no , it needs to be some thing Beachy or Mountinish or Just totaly different

Lamplighter 12-01-2012 10:31 AM

The east side of the Canadian Rockies are a great road trip.

... and there are trails and camping at all sorts of time/difficulty levels.

xoxoxoBruce 12-01-2012 10:42 AM

My uncle, talking about hunting Moose in Alaska, told me it would take him as many as 9 or 10 trips to pack the meat (and antlers) out to the nearest road. That's packing 100 to 150 lbs, over usually pretty rough terrain, so he'd take location into consideration before deciding whether to take the shot or pass.

infinite monkey 12-01-2012 10:57 AM

And that's when the grand exodus began: moose family after moose family moving to the safer suburbs.

Go west, young moose!

I've never been to the Canadian Rockies; they weren't exactly in my neighborhood, growing up. But they get my vote for a memorable birthday trip.

zippyt 12-01-2012 02:02 PM

That looks good 'cept the critter hacking part ,, i'll pass on that

footfootfoot 12-01-2012 03:13 PM

I'm sure that isn't a required part of the trip.

Griff 12-02-2012 07:23 AM

I'm sure that's the guides responsibility. :) My BiL used to be a wrangler for an outfitter. They'd pack the meat out by mule and horse.

glatt 01-14-2013 10:17 AM

That looks awesome!

If you are traveling during hurricane season, you might want to look into the policy on cancellations/refunds, and consider buying trip insurance so you don't lose any money if a storm changes your plans.

BigV 01-14-2013 10:36 AM

sunscreen M****F****, spf 50 and lots of it.

Money for booze.

a change of clothes in a larger size for the return trip.

xoxoxoBruce 01-14-2013 11:05 AM

Be careful going ashore, I've read those people inject marywannas.
And be careful on the boat, I've read those stewards molest hot wives like yours.

Oh, and watch out for the flying fish, they'll knock the drink right out of your hand. ;)

BigV 01-14-2013 11:23 AM

If he gets his drink knocked out of his hand by a flying fish, fourteen stories above the surface of the water.... I'll have what he's having. :D

footfootfoot 01-14-2013 12:31 PM

That wasn't a flying fish, it was a shark.

Cuba? No problem, just wander up to the bridge and when you see the captain say, "Hi Jack, lets go to Cuba". ;)

busterb 01-18-2013 08:03 PM

Just go to about any country in central america and board a plane for Havana. No stamps on passport please.

Big Sarge 01-19-2013 10:53 PM
