Windows 10

So who got their little Windows 10 icon in their tray today?

BigV 06-01-2015 10:58 PM

Not I.

:(

sexobon 06-01-2015 11:46 PM

I got it [Get Windows 10]. I'm running 8.1 that I upgraded from 8.

From what I've read, this will be an invitation to reserve an automatic upgrade which will become available July 29th.

Scary huh.

ETA: I made the reservation. It will automatically download and notify me when it's ready to be installed.

footfootfoot 06-02-2015 06:06 AM

I got one too. I'm on 7 ATM.

Anyone know anything about our new overlord?

Undertoad 06-02-2015 06:44 AM

I'm getting emotionally ready for the upgrade. It's hard because the last time I decided to just go ahead and trust Microsoft, I wound up with Windows ME.

limey 06-02-2015 02:23 PM

Imma gonna do a data back up first.
But before that Imma gonna watch you .... :corn:

I didn't see it until you said something about it.

I looked.

There it is.

Undertoad 06-02-2015 04:58 PM

People are saying the icon is adware or nagware and I suppose it is; but if you want it, and you have Win 7 SP1, Win 8 or 8.1, turn on Windows Updates.

It does allow us to reserve a free copy of Win 10 and that is a fair deal

It was a Windows Update that installed this icon/nagware/Win 10 reservation system... which is not really all that trustworthy... but it's 2015 and there you go. Everyone else has turned our devices and Internet services into payload for ads or paid services, so why not mother Microsoft?

glatt 06-03-2015 08:27 AM

Window's Update isn't trustworthy? Honest question, I really don't know. I assumed it was, since it came from the mother ship.

Undertoad 06-03-2015 10:23 AM

It's fine, but it is something we need to depend on, critical infrastructure, and so it's iffy that they use it to send along nagware.

I support Win-based solutions now and I have to instruct people to stop Windows Update for video wall systems.

classicman 06-08-2015 04:54 PM

I have it too. I'm afraid of messing with it. Things are fine here as is.

I'm old and in the way... and I know it.

xoxoxoBruce 06-08-2015 05:24 PM

I don't have it but that's OK, 7 Pro allows me to run XP in a virtual so I can run outlook express. No idea what 10 will or won't do.

fargon 06-08-2015 05:34 PM

What is this Windows 10 you are speaking of? It must not be for Apple our systems just work. Till they break down.

Undertoad 06-08-2015 05:46 PM

These are not for you, these are for the systems that cost about half what yours cost.

fargon 06-08-2015 06:03 PM

Keryx has one of those, how last century.

Undertoad 06-08-2015 06:22 PM

Older system? Luckily, she can just upgrade the slower parts, without being forced to buy an entirely different system.

fargon 06-08-2015 06:53 PM

She is running 7 now and wants to hear about windows 10 before she gets a new computer.

regular.joe 06-10-2015 02:01 AM

Come on guys, it's the only time I've ever seen a "nagware" icon in the tray from Microsoft, except to register the op system at the beginning, which was a good idea if I wanted to keep using the system. They've upgraded the damn thing, the thing everyone has had stupid issues with for the last 5 years and they want us to get a free copy of the upgrade.

I just hope it works with my ASUS PT2001. I actually kinda like the ability to use the operating system as a tablet and as a desktop.

I also hope that my Profs do't mind me lugging out a 20" tablet in their class.....

Pamela 06-11-2015 10:02 AM

if your Asus doesn't support the new security protocols in BIOS, 10 won't work.

Once or twice a year, I downgrade my laptop and use 8 to renew my GPS maps. What a nightmare. I always forget to reenable the security and it refuses to boot until I remember.

footfootfoot 06-11-2015 12:56 PM

If you want to remove the icon go to installed updates, find (KB3035583) and uninstall it. It's a recommended update that only spawns the icon.

Undertoad 07-29-2015 09:20 PM

It's launch day, did you guys click on your icon?

I'm waiting about a month or so...

I tried to install it over the top of Win 7 but Windows Defender quarantined it - said it was crapware. :3eye:

Happy Monkey 07-29-2015 09:44 PM

I remembered I had a laptop I never use laying around. Installing on that.

xoxoxoBruce 07-30-2015 01:48 AM

Not everyone gets an icon, it'll be released in waves. I saw a thing about how you can force the download if you don't want to wait.

Happy Monkey 07-30-2015 08:07 AM

Update failed twice on the laptop. It won't try again.

Gravdigr 07-30-2015 05:08 PM

Is there a way to get rid of the Windows 10 update bullshit icon out of my system tray?

Right clicking does not present the option "Get The Fuck Off My Machine".

Gravdigr 07-30-2015 05:09 PM

Nevermind.

sexobon 07-30-2015 08:07 PM

Well, I'm running Windows 10 and I made it back to the Cellar. Install time was 1 hr. 20 min. on my notebook. That's just installation time not counting prep time, downloading, and checking for post installation updates from Microsoft (there were 2 already) and HP.

It's going to take a while to get used to the new Microsoft Edge browser. I had to import my favorites [bookmarks] from IE and Edge doesn't have a separate Organize Favorites window. Modifying the Favorites list may be a nuisance. I don't see a Move icon that lets you choose a destination folder. You can easily move a Favorite to a folder or sub-folder by dragging it; but, I have to hunt for the way to put it elsewhere from there as the other folders don't display after the move and I didn't see an Undo icon.

Fortunately; however, Edge does allow you to easily open any webpage in the old IE browser with it's familiar Favorites format. That'll make the transition easier.

Interestingly, HP apprises that I not delete Windows 8.1 as some repair services they provide require that the OS be restored to the original version. I'll keep it until I would no longer consider having the notebook repaired.

That's all for now, I just did the upgrade this evening.

Microsoft faces criticism over privacy default settings on Window 10

http://www.theguardian.com/technolog...fault-settings

sexobon 08-02-2015 09:24 AM

Using the Express installation gives away the store in regard to privacy as does the majority of Recommended settings and Microsoft steers you towards them. There's an option to Customize settings somewhere on each page, in the fine print, perhaps at the bottom of the page, that you might have to scroll down to find; but, all of the sharing can be shut down. While I did that during installation, it can be done post installation through Settings as well. It's the same with selecting apps to install and permissions.

I turned Wi-Fi sharing off: I left Wi-Fi hotspots access on. I want to be able to keep browsing and I know not to send sensitive information over unsecured public access Wi-Fi connections. Hotspots access would have to be turned off if for some reason I didn't want my location tracked.

The default settings are for the masses whose lives are open books. For them and for those who additionally trust their contacts with access to their Wi-Fi connections, there are conveniences to be had.

Happy Monkey 08-02-2015 09:59 AM

It peer-to-peers windows updates.

sexobon 08-02-2015 11:11 AM

That's one of many problems with Microsoft. For those who find that they can't live with them; or, work around them there's:

START->Settings->Update & Security->Recovery->Go back to Windows 8.1->Get started

(or whatever previous Windows version you had prior to installing WIN10)

That Recovery option will be available for a month after the upgrade.

Pamela 08-03-2015 12:46 AM

Windows 10 is spying on almost everything you do. I suppose that was inevitable. Data, especially personal (private) data is big business.

Here’s how to opt out from 10's more egregious espionage.

be-bop 08-03-2015 10:30 AM

" Egregious Espionage".

Weren't they a band in the 70's

:D

xoxoxoBruce 08-03-2015 11:45 AM

I believe you're thinking of Erogenous Espionage, but I could be mistaken. ;)

Gravdigr 08-03-2015 02:40 PM

I thought that was more of a zone...

Undertoad 08-29-2015 02:47 PM

Took a shot at the upgrade this morning, result: about 5 hours of lost time

I forgot that I installed a new SSD on my system, migrated Windows to the new one but left the old one on the system. This must have confused Win10 as it tried to engage the old SSD in the upgrade.

The draw of having two SSDs was too great; but now I pay the price.

Win 10 decided that I had a bad setup that needed to be recovered. But to get to system repair was turrible; because I didn't have a CD Rom drive, and had to try to create recovery media on USB on a dying laptop, and boot that.

Win 10 system repair just put it back in Win 7 on reboot. It must have known. "Oh we gave this a try, I guess we shall punt gracefully."

I am going to try to remove the old SSD before trying the upgrade again

[Microsoft Admits Windows 10 Automatic Spying Cannot Be Stopped

Last week changes to the Windows 10 upgrade path mean it is going to become increasingly difficult for any non-techy users to avoid being pushed to Microsoft MSFT +1.85%’s new operating system. But given Windows 10 is better than Windows 7 and Windows 8, why would that be a problem? Because of policies like this…

... Speaking to PC World, Microsoft Corporate Vice President Joe Belfiore explained that Windows 10 is constantly tracking how it operates and how you are using it and sending that information back to Microsoft by default. More importantly he also confirmed that, despite offering some options to turn elements of tracking off, core data collection simply cannot be stopped: ...

... it does seem strange that it has taken Microsoft so long to come clean and admit core Windows 10 background data collection processes cannot be stopped. Instead it gave the impression that turning off all user accessible spying options in Windows 10 settings would provide owners with full privacy – that’s tantamount to spying. ...

... Windows and Devices Group head Terry Myerson recently confirmed Windows 10 Enterprise users will be able to disable every single aspect of Microsoft data collection.

This comes in combination with Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise users’ ability to permanently disable automatic updates which are forced upon consumers and shows the growing divide between how Microsoft is treating consumers versus corporations

... The good news: even if Belfiore states you cannot switch off everything, editing your privacy settings will disable the worst of these. ...

... The bad news: despite Belfiore’s pledge “to continue to listen”, Microsoft’s actions (including the impending Windows 7 and Windows 8 upgrade pressure) suggests the company’s recent love for Big Brother tactics is only going to get worse before it gets better…

Dude111 11-05-2015 02:22 PM

Yes they are doing whatever they can TO TRY AND FORCE AS MANY PPL AS THEY CAN onto this spying garbage!!

Undertoad 11-05-2015 03:28 PM

I've been running Win10 at work for the last 2 weeks and....

...it's generally very good. I hereby endorse this product or service. I will retry the home install.

I am not afraid

Gravdigr 11-05-2015 03:42 PM

Pass.

Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc . You will find a file named hosts . Open the file with Notepad (You must execute Notepad as an administrator) and add this following lines:

I noticed that apps.skype.com was in there. I'm sure skype steals your data as much as any other app, but if you actually use skype, I suspect you'd want to keep that.
