Tuba, or not Tuba

I stole this from Cellar member Kirk's site. Shhhh, mums the word. ;) But you could go there for his take on playing left handed vs right handed, from a guy that does both.

limey 01-20-2016 04:08 AM

As a French horn (valves under the left hand fingers) and tuba (valves under the right hand fingers) player I've never given it a second thought as to which/how/what/where/why. But if you ask me to think about it a liuttle more closely for me it's a 1, 2, 3 (index, middle, ring finger) question. Or maybe middle -> outwards?

In 2012, one of my local favorites, with tuba, attended HONKFEST in Austin. I was not in attendance, sadly. But I have seen them live and they're a spectacle to behold. Probably one vid would lead to another. I give you

TITANIUM SPORKESTRA!

You could embiggen, but you should crank it.

Gravdigr 07-01-2017 12:59 PM

If I had to listen to almost nine minutes of that (the War Pigs cover) I would attempt suicide.

I'm afraid to try the other vids now. I couldn't make it 60 seconds. Not even.

I thank you for the exposure and the opportunity for new music, though.:o

Hey Limey, you could add a bagpipe to your new band, real cheap. :D

Gravdigr 07-25-2017 03:10 PM

They shoulda been sued. In fact, I bet they were.

xoxoxoBruce 07-25-2017 10:06 PM

For what? By whom?

Gravdigr 07-31-2017 01:48 PM

For making a bagpipe targeted to children.

By everybody.

xoxoxoBruce 08-19-2017 08:09 AM

At around 1:50 they are doing some great Sousaphone flips. Bigger is better of course.

fargon 08-19-2017 02:00 PM

Some tubas get re-purposed for medical experiments...

Kirk explains how the valves work on brass instruments.

Quote:

Any other fellow computer nerds out there subconsciously bugged that a trombone slide held all the way in is "first position" and not "zeroeth position"?

Actually, for my School of Honk'ers that might be curious about the pattern valves have -- I don't know if sectionals run this by new members when they start, so apologies if everyone knows it :-D (For School of Honk, this mostly is about the trumpets and tubas, though or baritone friends we get sometimes play the same too)

Most brass instruments with valves work the same way - pressing down more valves is like moving out the slide on a trombone, the air goes through that tube, so overall the instrument is "bigger", in terms of more tubing = slower vibration = lower sound. (Of course it's more complicated than that, since you have to learn to adjust your lips to buzz at a different "partial". Or it could be simpler than that- with a bugle (or heaven forbid a Vuvuzela) and no valves- in which case you can play nothing but partials. Bugle calls like "taps" and "reveille" make their music out of that- a trumpet player can play all those songs without pressing any valves, or just keeping one down all the time)

ANYWAY, the middle, "second" valve moves you down a half step, first valve a whole step, third valve -- 1 1/2 steps. Which seems pretty weird! I think it's meant to put the more-used whole step on the stronger pointer finger, maybe? And you can combine valves to lower more steps (you might have noticed the third valve is more-or-less the same as first plus second.) Some big horns like concert tubas will have a fourth valve, which will put you down 2 whole steps, and so is about the same as pressing 1 and 3, but lets you dig even lower beneath that.

that is full bad-ass. I approve.

But, back to Tubas.

monster 04-14-2018 10:41 PM

Tuba or not Tuba ...Thunderboy's current dilemma. They have a lot of baritone/euphonium players but a dearth of Tubophonists. If he sticks with the bari, he might make it up to the next band for his senior year (unlikely imo because band teacher hates him). If he changes to Tuba, he's stuck at the lower level, but I think he'd enjoy it and maybe be less bored and distracted and his band teacher might like him more....

There is something splendid about being the bass/base of the band. I don’t have a full grasp of US band orchestration, but unless you are lead euph or bari you’re kind of one of the chorus I expect. Bass (tuba) is a better instrument for someone who is more of an individualist, less likely to seek out the “safety in numbers” thing. Feel free to ask questions, or contact me directly for further discussion.

Why is he considering moving to tuba? Has he been asked to? Does he want to be promoted to senior band for the kudos? Which band will have most of his band buddies in?

They need Tubas. He likes to be needed. He likes making deep noises. And big instruments. I'm really not sure. At this point, it's not a battle worth me getting involved with. Although not sure battle is the appropriate word...

limey 04-18-2018 06:12 PM

:tuba::tuba::tuba:
It is nice to be needed. And to make deep noises. Carrying (and storing) big instruments not so much, but YMMV.
Why the hell not, eh?
:tuba::tuba::tuba:

monster 04-18-2018 06:17 PM

ah well there's the beauty. They don't have to take them home or store them in the main. Big instruments are left at school. Because they play every day in class, they are not expected to practice in the evenings. Or own their own instruments. Only during summer did we have two baritones in the house (Marching and concert)

limey 04-19-2018 01:50 AM

Personally I'd go for the new experience in band. If he dissent enjoy it can be go back to bari?

Sent by magick

monster 04-19-2018 09:41 PM

no :( band teacher says no going back :/ guess they don't have enough instruments for all the bari players....

he had to share last year when his was being fixed because no spares anywhere in city

limey 04-20-2018 06:58 AM

OK. I have no more advice to give except he flip a coin. Heads it's tuba, tails it's bari. The trick is to believe (make him believe?) that he must do what the coin says. When the coin makes the decision what does he feel? Relief? or Disappointment? And then go with that feeling .... i.e. coin says "bari" and he is disappoint. So go to tuba. Or coin says bari and he is like "phew!", so go with bari .....

In comparison with other brass instruments, you don’t so much “blow” a tuba (quiet at the back there!!!), as breathe through it.
