.......calculus. I wish it would die and take its integrals, antiderivatives, exponential growth and all that math shit and bite it. It is fucking up my grades in school. Maybe my high school teachers taught math better, maybe my college TA can't teach for shit but I loathe calculus. Got a 57 and 54 on my first 2 exams, tomorrow is my final exam. In high school I got As in every math class, this is so new to me, fucking up mathematics. I hope I can pass the class, but fuck what are the chances.

Seconded. Though, to be honest, I've never made it that far. I'm imaging the torture calculus must be relative to the torture fairly simple mathematics poses for me personally.

Also, I'm taking a Philosophy of Physical Science test at 1:3 today. Got a 76% on my first one which pissed me off. You would think a class that talks about the Universe would be fun, but NOooooooooooooooooooooooooo. It's pure hell.

I hated calculus too. I had to work with a tutor to get through it, but it helped a lot.

I hated all the math I had until calculus. Calculus, I loved that shit. Discrete math is pretty good too.

This is why Calculus should be taught in high schools. Some find it a very natural thing, but for those who don't it can be practically opaque and the high school classroom is by far the best place to get the more personalized attention you need for subjects of this sort.

I don't know if that helps necessarily...I took calculus in high school, but I don't feel like our class was offered much personal attention, unfortunately. Our teacher knew his stuff in front of the group, but he wasn't very good with the one-on-one thing.

I don't use a book. We use this program called Mathematica (I never want to hear it's name again) which has files and tutorials in it that teaches us. It is like a language such as BASIC but for math. Every other week there is one day dedicated to the TA lecturing about what we should have taught ourselves for the last week and a half. The rest of the days (its 50 minutes every day) we spend sitting in the computer lab learning this shit on our own and making programs utilizing the calculus we are learning. I hate it, because I can't teach myself this stuff, I have no idea where this shit is derived from.

The general consensus at the University of Illinois is that math is WAYYYYY too hard, my brother's friend who is a Civil Engineer (need math for that?) took Calculus 2 at U of I and got a C. He decided to take the rest of his math courses at our community college back home, because well, U of I sucks at teaching math.

And it's too late for me to tell you my math problems, the exam is tomorrow. But then calculus will be out of my life forever. JUST LIKE CHEMISTRY!!!

I took AP Calculus in high school, but didn't take the test to try to get the credits and skip it in college. That was a bonehead move. Mostly I was afraid I would fail the test because I got Cs in it during the year, and didn't have a strong understanding of it.

So I took it a second time in college my Freshman year. I had overconfidence, since I had passed it in high school, so I didn't do the homework. Almost failed that class. The prof gave me a D for the course, and it was totally a gift that she passed me.

I understood a lot of the concepts, but had a hard time doing the equations and problems. It was hard. I should have done the homework and studied in college.

That sounds like an awful style of teaching, fresh :(

I got a 5 on the Calc BC exam, but had too little confidence, and only took college credit for AB.

Big mistake. Retaking the BC stuff was t... e... d... i... o... u... s...



And yes, that Mathematica-based course sounds awful. Mathematica is great, but it's a calculator, not a teacher.

Personally, my brain shut down before I ever got to calculus. The only practical math I learned was T minus forty-five minutes and counting . . . :sick:

The drawing pictures part of calculus is what made the concepts stick in my head. After a while I started looking at curves in real life in a much different way. I can't imagine trying to learn calculus by writing programs. However calculus improved my programming skills...

I got a 4 on the BC.

Got a B+ on Multivariable Calculus

I am borderline failing Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. I understand most of it but the tests are very difficult and are more word problems so you have to figure out how to create the equation and know what equation to use and then find the answer which is so much harder than actually finding the answer.


I still like Calc and I'm thinking of getting a minor in math while majoring in Civil Engineering.

I'm a Sports Management major, math and science ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I took BC in 10th grade and did pretty awful in the class ... but I still managed a 5 on the AP test. Multivariable was pretty moderate; differential equations, however, absolutely kicked my ass. And I took that the same time as physics B, which killed me - yeah, that was not a fun year.

Then I went to college and drank all the time and pretty much stopped thinking altogether, so whatever intelligence I once had as a teenager is no longer.

So fresh, UI doesn't have a "calculus for business applications" or anything like that? My school had a couple courses that basically amounted to advanced algebra.

Yes, the U of I has business calculus which I heard is loads easier than strictly math limited courses. But I don't need that in my major, the only math I have left to take is research and analysis :)

YES I finished my calc final and was fairly pleased that I knew all of the concepts and was able to answer every question on the final, (unlike the previous two exams). My all nighter paid off, except at the end of the final I was like "fuck this I'm so tired right now, this is the longest exam in the history of the world" and it was, 16 pages for a math exam, is HUGE when you have to show your work and all. Took me just over two hours whew. Now that' I've been up 28 hours straight I think I'm going to go into a coma until 3 PM, which is 4.5 hours until I have to start practicing my speech final.

I never once took calc...and I never will. There is NO WAY IN HELL I'll ever be able to do that kind of math.

Its not that bad if you have a good teacher and actually try to understand it.

I am taking higher calculus with a horrible teacher giving us extremely hard tests so it is not fun.
