Orphan Black

anyone else watching Orphan Black?
if not i really recommend it. it's a joint production between a canadian network and BBC America, fantastic not-exactly-scifi show.
possible first-few-episodes spoilers whited out below:

Basically, Tatiana Maslany (AMAZING actress) plays Sarah, a part-time con artist, who lives in toronto with her foster brother. While waiting for a train, she watches a girl who looks exactly like her jump in front of a train, and finds out that she is just one of a whole series of clones. Tatiana plays a british-canadian con artist, a bored suburban housewife, an american science phd student, a deranged ukrainian serial killer, and a handful of other clones, and does a mind-blowing job playing so many distinct characters. the show builds into a great conspiracy thriller, and when i say not-exactly-scifi i mean that the only real scifi element so far is the existence of a bunch of human clones.

I maybe haven't done the best job selling it right there but i really do recommend it, if you haven't seen it.

Hi Ibby!

Sounds interesting. I'll look into it.

I'd hit it

Clodfobble 05-19-2014 11:10 PM

Howdy, Ibby! I've been seeing promo screens for it on Netflix, maybe Mr. Clod and I will give it a try.

BigV 05-19-2014 11:18 PM

I should say, for those of you who haven't seen it, and intend to see it, do not reveal the spoiler text in Ibby's opening post.

Ibby 05-19-2014 11:22 PM

the spoiler text doesn't reveal mmuuuuuuuch past the first few episodes. I probably knew more about it than that just from coming across gifs and stuff on tumblr, before watching it, and it didn't ruin anything for me at least. if you like complete unspoiledness definitely dont reveal it, thats why i hid it to start with, but it mostly just spoils the sort of basic concept.

edit: i mean like, the best part of the first few episodes is the reveal OF the concept, so like, yeah read at your own risk obvs

Incredible show. We had a party for the season 2 premier. Tatyana is an unbelievable talent.

Sheldonrs 05-20-2014 08:02 AM

I tried watching it a few times after a friend at work suggested it but just couldn't get into it.

Happy Monkey 05-20-2014 10:00 AM

Amazing how easy it is to forget that the characters are played by one person.

Gravdigr 05-20-2014 03:38 PM

Hiya Ibs. How's things?

footfootfoot 05-26-2014 04:21 PM

fucking love this show.

She is one talented actress, shooting/directing this must be a logistical headache.

Sastra, what is vedgie cabinet?

It’s a place where all of the vegetables go.

Oh. Why? Were they bad?

No. They’re there so they’re all in one place to eat, Helena. Vegetables can’t be good or bad.
Oh. That is good. I am glad they are all in one place. That is nice. I like vegetables. They are very good listeners.

I’m glad you like the vegetables. They like you too.
They do? I am glad they like me. I hope they do not mind when I eat them sometimes.

Spexxvet 05-27-2014 10:38 AM

Helena is obsessed with food, and eats like an animal (which is how Thomas treated her). In the last episode, when Sarah left her in the car, I knew she would get out to eat.

hi to the person who was never really here. I sure hope they drop by more often

Happy Monkey 11-25-2014 12:18 AM

I saw this a while back, but I just ran across it again:

DanaC 05-18-2016 03:16 PM

For anybody who hasn't seen the first series but intends to, spoilers below

Re: finale to season 1 - Nooooooooooooo! I'm gutted. The foster mum! And now Kira's gone! Fuck. Can't believe the foster mum wasn't on the level. I really liked her. She seemed like the rock for Sarah and Felix. She seemed so solid and grounded and strong, and honest. That was like having the rug pulled out from under me. And now of course I have to watch the first ep of season 2.

DanaC 05-22-2016 04:41 PM

Ohmigod! new clone! With beard!

footfootfoot 05-22-2016 06:02 PM

I know, she goes off the res and so far hasn't come back.

Happy Monkey 05-23-2016 12:21 PM

Thought I caught a glimpse in some previews.

DanaC 05-23-2016 01:44 PM

I like how they name the episodes. I didn't realise until i went on wiki that the first series were all quotes from Darwin's 'On the Origins of Species', and the second series are all quotes from the works of Sir Francis Bacon

Also - I think Helena is my favourite clone. What a fantastic character she is. Terrifying psychotic, and childlike innocent by turns.

Her theme is awesome

DanaC 05-24-2016 04:01 PM

Yeah, I love her music. That vid doesn't play for me, but I know the music you mean. I also loved the way, when we first got to know Helena, everything about the direction, from the sound to the visuals was jagged and broken.

So - anyway, I just watched the season 2 finale - wow what a ride! I loved that scene where they were all dancing in Felix's apartment. So lovely. A really nice, tender moment.

DanaC 05-24-2016 05:27 PM

Brilliantly done.

The thing is, I'm so used to seeing two or three clones together, and so completely locked into them as separate characters, that i didn't even wonder how they'd done it.

They're just totally separate people in my mind. I forget they're the same actor. Even when one of them is playing another clone, I'm seeing that character playing her, rather than the actor.

She's fucking amazing. I am baffled as to why she hasn't won an emmy yet.

footfootfoot 05-24-2016 06:59 PM

The camera must have been on a programmed course in order for all those plates to line up. Amazing technical achievement.

DanaC 05-28-2016 05:26 PM

Nooooooooo, not Paul!

Gutted.

That was an emotional episode (ep 6 , s3).

I struggled a bit with the first two or three eps of this season, But I am right back on the Orphan Black ride now. It really started to come together around ep 4. And eps 5 and 6 have been as compelling as the previous seasons. I could quite happily sit here and watch another episode - but it's almost 11:30...

DanaC 05-31-2016 02:29 PM

Hmmmm....ep 9 - Siobhan's mum? Really? That seems a bit of a cheap hit.

Still enjoying and will go with it - but really?

[eta] ok - i get it now. Not a ridiculous coincidink after all.

DanaC 06-04-2016 04:53 PM

Wow, season 4 is excellent! I've just watched the second episode and it was a killer. So far this is shaping up to be the best season yet. It has the deep intrigue of the first season but with the emotional punch of well-known characters.

I really liked the way they cut between Beth in the past and Sarah and Art in the present.. Using the surveillance footage to tie it together was so beautifully done.

I also like the body-horror aspect of the implant thing. They've played that very well, it really gives a shiver down the spine.

I'm so glad -I wasn't sure how this season was going to play out, given the last season, which, though it definitely got more engaging and I enjoyed watching it, did feel a bit like they were casting (hehe) around for storylines. This season feels fully integrated into the overall narrative. right back on blistering good form.

footfootfoot 06-04-2016 06:56 PM

It was a relief after season 3. I was really worried they had lost direction back then.
