My New TV Addiction...

I've come across a British TV show that is brilliant. It's funny as hell.

It's called, The IT Crowd.

The first one I saw was actually from the 2nd season.

It was so funny I went to Season 1 and I can't stop myself.

You can find the shows here:

I REALLY hope someone picks this up in America. I doubt they could do it more funny though. They get away with more profanity over there.

Drax 02-13-2008 02:04 AM

Currently, the only British shows I watch are Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Graham Norton.

Radar 02-13-2008 02:09 AM

You might like this. Watch 1 episode and see for yourself

Drax 02-13-2008 02:21 AM

Will do.

Happy Monkey 02-13-2008 01:46 PM

You think that's good... Just you wait!

Radar 02-13-2008 05:10 PM

Sweet!!! I just found out NBC is picking up the show. They've got the same nerdy black guy, but a different blonde and they've replaced the Irish guy.

Pro1: Jolly good laugh. :D I needed one after the shitty day I've had.
ro2: Video quality of .DIVX files are a lot better than YouTube's .FLVs.
Pro3: DivX Web Player includes download feature.
Con: Took way too long time to buffer at my current connection speed (800Kbps).

Figures. Almost everything at the BBC has been imported and americanized.

Anyway, IT might not: http://www.zap2it.com/tv/news/zap-nb...,7647371.story

I hope not, and BBC America or Comedy Central picks up the original UK version.

Radar 02-13-2008 05:44 PM

I'd prefer it if HBO picked it up, kept the original cast...and language, and made a lot more than 6 episodes per year. I really don't think the American cast will have the chemistry or timing of the British cast.

Sperlock 02-13-2008 09:09 PM

Yes, the IT Crowd rocks. They really should keep the whole original cast for an American version.

Drax 02-13-2008 09:14 PM

No American version, just import it, and show it. ;)

Timo 02-26-2008 04:35 PM

no! American version!
I'm British (more specificly North London) and i'm a little tired of British humour, I think one the whole American comedy is funnier.
The Office for instance, LOVE the American version (although we're yet to get season 3 on dvd over here) but I just can't get into the British version,
I think you guys would do a great The IT crowd,
although it's hard to picture Moss played by an American,

DanaC 02-26-2008 04:56 PM

Oh man I love that show. It's one of my favourites.

What is it with you guys and having to do american versions of the shows? When we get an American show we generally just show it and it rocks. Some of my favourite comedy shows have been American. Sometimes we get inspired by your show and do something similar, with similar themes but not a straight out Brit version of the comedy (reality shows and quizzes maybe). For me I love to see the American sense of humour. It's subtly different to the English humour and it's also great to hear the American accents.

Timo, I gotta say, yeah American shows are funny. But so are many Brit shows. Black Books was hysterical. Greenwing had me in stitches. IT Crowd is quintessentially English. The Office was amazing, yeah the American version was funny but to me the English version was much funnier (if a little excruciating). Extras was also a classy number. American comedy is often brilliant. But so is Brit comedy. They offer different perspectives and a slightly different take on the world.

The wonderful thing about sharing a language and almost sharing a culture is that our comedies translate to each other well (imo) without being identical.

Undertoad 02-26-2008 05:21 PM

The Brit Whose Line always had a bit less show and a bit more funny to it. Luckily they kept Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie, but it seemed like at some point they decided to have all of the "improvs" be pre-decided things that the guys are good at. That seemed to take the comedy edge off it.

Radar 02-27-2008 01:05 AM

I prefer the American version of The Office, but I just don't see an American version of the IT Crowd being as funny. One reason is because the Brits can get away with harsher language, and another is because the show has a slight Monty Python feel to it. I was sad to see the first boss die, even though the guy who plays his son is funny too...but not quite as much.

I forgot about Extras, that really had it's moments,
the scene with Ian McKellen was brilliant, "gandalf gandalf gandalf... sir ian!"

I guess i'm forgetting the oldies too, like Dads Army, Only Fools and Horses, Porrige, they were all fanatstic,

oh and the Mighty Boosh I guess (let down by season 3) but yeah, thats alright.

DanaC 02-27-2008 05:50 AM

oof! I forgot the Boosh! Now that's one bizarre motherfucker of a comedy right there. Thos two have truly strange minds. Ever seen Noel Fielding do standup, Timo? Very, very strange man. But funny.

DanaC 02-27-2008 05:52 AM

@ Radar. Actually, with the Office I can see more rationale for making an American version. I can also see why you would prefer the American and I would prefer the brit. The whole point of that show is to make it excruciatingly real. That's where the humour derives from. In order for that humour to work, you need to be able to associate in and recognise that workplace as 'normal'. An English office workplace won't resonate the same with you as it would with me and vice versa.

Timo 02-27-2008 06:51 AM

never seen his stand up no,
but he was brilliant when he filled in for Bill Bailey on Never Mind the Buzzcocks,
outstanding even,

DanaC 02-27-2008 06:57 AM

Did you ever catch Garth Merenghi's Darkplace? Some of the same people as are in IT crowd. Very funny.

Here's the first part of episode one: Keep going to the interviews that's where it starts to get really funny :P

Timo 02-27-2008 07:18 AM

hahah, that was wonderfully offbeat, I can see why they're friendly with the Boosh-crew,

I've worked in very large corporate environments for almost 2 decades. My current job is the smallest company I've worked at for a long time and we've got 5 locations. I'm the I.T. Director for a movie producer right now. That being said, I think the reason I like the American version of the office better is because it's NOT the same kind of environment as we've got in America. The boss and many of the other employees on the show are acting wholly inappropriate. They would be fired within a day in any real office.

The British version seems a bit more subdued to me, and it seems like you could actually get away with some of what they do. To be fair though, I've only seen 1 or 2 episodes of the British one.

DanaC 02-27-2008 03:02 PM

I have worked in an office very like the Brit one. Had a boss a bit like him too. Always trying to be matesy with everyone and thought he was a fucking standup comedian, but rarely hit the mark. Sexist, mildy racist and no idea about disabled issues. I totally recognised that environment. I think that's what I loved about it. As an additional point, my role in that office was to sell typewriter ribbon via telesales....it was a long time ago :P

That episode had me on the floor, laughing for days... I loved Extras!

I blatantly refuse to watch the American version of The Office. I love the BBC version, have watched it so many times, love it so very much. I felt offended that there was a need for an American version.
