Online ordering horseshit

Last month I ordered a therometer form Poleder online. Below is what happened.
Hello
I placed an order with you'll on the 2/23/06. Number 1140713799BB.
This was debited from my account on the 2/25/06. It's now the 3/08/06.
I've not had an email telling me there's a problem with this order or in fact if it's been shipped. That's 8 business days that someone is using my money.
If I'm in error in thinking that yours is a badly run business, please set me straight. Before I post what I perceive to be true all around the web.
It looks like to me you have no credit so you have to use my money to stock the item I ordered?

Now that I've got that off my chest, please reply.
busterb. The reply.
Dear Buster,

Please allow me the opportunity to determine the status of your order. I've requested a tracking number from our warehouse manager. I should have it by mid day tomorrow. I would think that the package should be close to
arriving on your doorstep. I'll find out and relay to you.

Thank you for your patience.

Well thanks for your prompt reply yesterday, didn't get one today. My order came today, and just as I thought. It was shipped from Polder, inc in New York. Which doesn't add up to the gourmet kitchen in the state of FL. Which tells me that you used my money to buy the item. So be assured I'll do all I can to help you in your endeavors in business. :headshake buster
I have no problems with most store front web sites. In fact I'm about to order from zoomfly, newegg and superwarehouse.
But it burns my donkey to use my damn money to front a micky mouse business. And to quote @#$%ing hell

xoxoxoBruce 03-10-2006 07:33 PM

I think this is a pretty common practice these days. Especially for places that have a big selection, they can cut costs significantly by not stocking and drop shipping most items.

The ones that irk me are the NY camera outlets that take the order, charge your card the wait awhile and tell you the oversold the item so they are willing to sell you something not as good for the same or more money. They get real pissy when you ask for a refund.

Thanks for clearing this up for me. Well in advance of Christmas I ordered a sweatshirt that should have shipped in 2 days and a month later I had to cancel the order after they got around to letting me know the size was not in stock. Since I saw the item in another company's catalog around the same time, this would explain why they screwed around for so long and then never filled my order. What made it even worse was I ordered a different item on still a different website and never heard from them either until I wrote an angry email. What kind of incompetent system do we have to distribute China's merchandise here anyway????

I found one of those when I was looking up the price of one of the EOD cameras mentioned here. Froogle had a store that was undercutting the others by at least $500. However, when you looked at the comments you found that the store was breaking apart the included items like charger and batteries and pricing them separately. They also forced customers to buy these 'accessories' when the customers did the math and figured they could still come out ahead by buying the camera and shopping for the charger and batteries somewhere else. They also tried bait and switch and held the orders hostage.

Unlike Yahoo, Google does not appear to drop crappy merchants.

seakdivers 03-11-2006 12:32 PM

I ordered a camera from one of the NY outfits a few years ago... For months I got the "ooops not it stock" message, and then the company just dissapeared. It was too late to dispute the charges on my card by that time.
I had so much crap going on in my life at the time that I just let it go.

Anyway - I'm sorry about your experience with the Polder folks. They make an excellent thermometer! Are you using for BBQing?

lumberjim 03-11-2006 01:07 PM

you can order horseshit online???

monster 03-11-2006 05:45 PM

The polderonline site states that they're not part of Polder inc. Yes I got it for use in smoker and bbq. But way down in the fine print, it says not to use for that. WTF That's why I bought the damn thing.

That sort of happened to me on ebay with a bare-bones PC setup. I ended up leaving for vacation and emailing them that if my stuff wasn't waiting for me when I got back from the vacation I was going to get my bank to do a chargeback. When I got back I had an email from their lawyers telling me they had filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy and I was listed with the bankruptcy court as one of the creditors. :3_eyes: (I never heard from the court but I was successful in getting a credit from my bank.)

I ordered an online "service" expecting instant access at 5:10 central today, no go yet, all I need is the super secret double probation confirmation email, I'm getting pretty cheesed. And no the service isn't porn, porn is free.

slang 03-12-2006 02:54 AM

It's amazing to me that all of you have had such troubles. It's not that I dont believe your tales of ripoffs and bad service, I've just not had them (yet).

Have I just been lucky? It seems so. Very lucky as it turns out because I change addresses every 6 months or so, have things delivered to the office, the temp address, and places while I'm in transit going here and there. All the while not having any real troubles with ordering or delivery.

Mostly books and mostly from Amazon. Other odd things too though.

No problems. No ripoffs. Rarely need to pick up the God damned telephone.

I've had similar experiences with orders online. I usually stick to big name places these days, as the possible savings I could get from smaller companies is usually far outweighed by the hassle I'm going to have to go through to actually GET the item. Actually, I'm dealing with an order like that right now. Back on the friday before last, I think the 3rd? I ordered a pair of ear 'rings' (They're actually spirals, but whatever) and the site offers 1-2 day shipping. Got charged, then saw that it didn't offer that kind of shipping for that item. I'm still waiting for it, even though it was processed 5 days ago. Come to think of it, it's time for another e-mail to them.

xoxoxoBruce 03-13-2006 06:57 PM

I try to watch out for how they ship, also.
UPS = Fantastic.
USPS = Usually ok
DHL = only once, but first rate
Airborne = 50/50

FedEx = I've got a hundred horror stories.:rar:

Stress Puppy 03-13-2006 07:06 PM

It's USPS. I've never had problems with most shippers in my time, and I've used DHL, USPS, UPS, and FedEx. It's the company that's doing this, I think. After I placed the order, I happened to glance back at the shopping cart and noticed that it had a notice that 1-2 day shipping wasn't available, and that they also didn't have the quantity I wanted (2.. c'mon.. how can they not have a pair of ear rings?) When I e-mailed the company, they said that everything was fine and it should go out tomorrow (That was the 8th)

Sadly, I've heard this happens with this company, I was just hoping that it wouldn't happen to me. If they fix all this and do something to make amends, I can feel good recommending them to other people. If they keep giving me the runaround, well, I'll make a point of steering people away from them. Oh, and annoying them until I get a refund or my order.

RE: NY camera stores

If you poke around the web a little, you'll find the story of a guy who got burned by one of those scams and exposed the entire operation. No time at the moment, or I'd find and post the link. I think you might find it in the archives at memepool.com, though.

I have never had a problem with Fedex once they actually had the package, but their scheduled pickup service has burned me often enough that I use them only when I have a prepaid shipping tag from a vendor.

busterb 03-14-2006 12:17 PM

I order by fedex, because I like to talk with the fox that brings me the junk! :smack:

SteveDallas 03-14-2006 12:19 PM

Well that's a whole nother sort of pickup service!

Anyway, an example I forgot: I'm shipping a box with 4 rented laptops that are being returned to Charleston, SC. (Long story; please don't ask.) Our dining services are sending a piece of equipment back to Kansas City, MO for repair. Both had Fedex pick up call tags for the same day. The Fedex driver arrives and sees that his tag for the KC delivery calls for two boxes. (Both dining services and their vendor swear they never said anything about two boxes, only one. And I believe them.) So the driver pulls the Charleston airbill off of the box of laptops and pastes a KC sticker on that box.

busterb 03-14-2006 12:21 PM

BTW. I just placed orders from, zoomfly, M-wave, and superwarehouse. Maybe newegg. Hell I have a back-up for this. !st time for super.

It's nice to see that other people here have that same attitude for these people.

When shipping from an established business there have been no problems with those things I've had shipped.

It's those things that I've had shipped "overnight" via those God damned Kinkos that makes my trigger finger twitch.

Not only do they charge a small fortune for the most basic things there, they often f**k the order up even when the forms are filled out correctly and completely.

It's true that the demand for overseas deliveries is not all that great in from those places but I ship international often. I know what has to be done more than they do many times.

Fedx makes me pick up the phone and chase things so often, they are at the bottom of the list of shippers.

UPS is the best IMO. Once I leave the UPS Store....there have been zero problems.

Well, for $20, you could get one of these from Circuit City. I bought one for my BBQ.

seakdivers 03-14-2006 09:16 PM

Hmmm - I might have to get one of those rich!

Now once I get my Big Green Egg, I am going to get one of these:

Update on me ('cause I'm important, you see)
Apparently the company I'd ordered from lost their 'net connect for about half of last week, which was coincidentally also a time when I was out of town. I got ahold of one of them yesterday and he got my order out the door today (supposedly, I'll keep you updated :) )

busterb 03-16-2006 05:56 PM

Today got a new kboard, new mouse and 1 used one that sold as "retail." To me retail means boxed, new. The one I'm trying is MS intellimouse explorer 4.0. I like it. Ive been a trackball user for years. BTW. I missed the "fox" from fedx this morning. But was here when a big black guy from them came by. Boy you should have seen the show he put on when my dog bailed out the door. She doesn't bite, just thinks everyone comes to see her.

busterb 03-17-2006 06:57 PM

This might fit here. Today my directv went off. I had owed them 28.52, and was due the 23th and paid today. They deducted 100 from my account. I just might get too much to drink at times, but I think I know when I'm typing in 100 bucks. The online bill said I had a credit of 76.48. So why did they cut me off? So I could spend 1 hr on hold? Said would give me a refund in 30 days. So they use my flappin money for weeks.

xoxoxoBruce 03-17-2006 07:57 PM

PA doesn’t have regional motor vehicle offices, there is only one, in Harrisburg, and everything was supposed to be handled by mail, for most of the state.
What actually happened was private Tag services sprang up that sent a courier up to Harrisburg every day or at least several times a week.
For a fee, they would take care of the paperwork and bring your tags back, in a day or two. A few years ago the state authorized these tag services to issue temporary plates on the spot and lately, some have been doing almost everything “online” with computers and FAX machines.

I bought my truck on 11-12-05 in NJ and they gave me temporary, non-resident, 20 day tags. On 11-16-05 I went to the tag service and gave them the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, the Bill of Sale, a check made out to PAdot for $2400 sales tax and cash to pay for the service and transfer my tags from the car.

They said I couldn’t transfer the tags because I needed truck tags but I could trade the car tags in for credit because I’d just renewed them. They said, drive on the car tags and carry my copy of the paperwork, until the title came from the state in the mail. Then come back and get my truck tags which they can’t issue without a title.

Now I’ve been through this many times, as a matter of fact I could have told them what the drill is. I also know it takes about two months for the title to come, plus I figured with the holidays, a little longer.

In the middle of January, I start looking for the title. By the end of January I’m wondering where the hell it is. But if I asked the tag service, they’ll say it’s up to the state, they have no control over it and come back when the title comes. So I went to the state web site which said, if it hasn’t been ninety days, don’t bother us.

On February 28th I emailed the state giving them the dates, names, numbers and asking where my title is? They replied they needed the reference number stamped on the check, which had been cashed on 11-21-05.
I don’t know about where you are, but around here we don’t get our checks back, just a miniature picture of the front of the check. Of course I need the back of the check so off to the bank for a photostat.

The photostat had no reference number, just a “For Deposit Only” stamp with an account number. When I told the state, they sent me back to the tag service.

The tag service made all kinds of dumb excuses like, they wrote in my middle name and I signed with my initial, and the state kicked it back the second time because the tag service had overcharged me $15. I growled.

This was Monday. Tuesday they called to say they had my tags.....and $15. Wednesday, I got the title in the mail, not from the state, from the service???
The sales tax receipt said the sale date was 2-28 and the application made on 3-7-06.
I still don’t know who had the $2400 for four months.:right:

Stress Puppy 03-18-2006 04:24 PM

I got my order the day after the guy said he'd figured out what was going on and shipped it. So, in that respect, it was shipped properly.

A non-scientific test of the 2 that I have. 1. A polder, which give the temp. in oven, smoker what ever and the meat.
2. Is a Nexxtech.Which is wierless, great. The photo show the diffrence? hell I can't spell the word that I'm thinking of. Take your pick.

richlevy 07-10-2006 10:03 PM

I see the 9 degree difference. What were the probes stuck into? If it's meat, different parts could have different temperatures.

A quick test would be to fill a mug with hot water and use a rubber band to put the probes together side by side so that the tips are right next to each other, then drop them in the water. If you still get a 9 degree difference then one of the probes is wrong.

The only way to tell which one is right is by dropping in an old fashioned candy thermometer.

BTW, how does the Polder know the temperature that your oven is set to? Do you program that in or is there some interface?

dar512 07-10-2006 10:19 PM

I've heard mostly complaints about polder on a number of bbq sites.

I wonder if they own most of the market? There was a time when 90% of the time I heard about a commercial plane crash, it was a Boeing plane.....but 90% of the commercial planes flying, were Boeing's.

I take your point, Bruce. What I should have said is, "of all the comments I read about Polder products, the vast majority are negative".

Having said that I should add that I see more positive comments for the Maverick items, but they also get their chops busted a lot.

I find a good instant-read thermometer does the job for me.

seakdivers 07-11-2006 11:25 AM

A common way to check the accuracy is to put the probe into boiling water. It should read 212 degrees (unless you are at high altitude).

busterb 07-18-2006 04:32 PM

I stated, A non-scientific test of the 2 that I have. They were in 2 diffrent birds. Yes Rich you can program the temp in. I know about the 212 thing and that ice water is 32.
