Cellar upgrade

Yeah, yeah... I never announce these things and sometimes they don't go exactly correctly. I upgraded us tonight to the latest version of the forum software, and a few things are broken - worst thing is, I'm not sure exactly why. But nothing was lost and nothing will be lost - just a matter of tracking down these last few oddities.

marichiko 03-11-2006 06:43 PM

Yeah, I can't seem to edit my posts anymore, and I always make these horrid typo's an spelin erwars and stuff, so nw what? Wah!!! (whine, whine, wine) wine!

Happy Monkey 03-11-2006 08:46 PM

Yay! Links in the Quick Reply!

fargon 03-11-2006 10:04 PM

No spell check, I gess I kin go on buggin yous whit me 4th grad skewlin!!!

marichiko 03-11-2006 10:59 PM

Just a quick note. It appears that I can now once more edit my posts! Hurray! We now return you to the usual level of spelling atrocities courtesy Mari! ;)

Beestie 03-11-2006 11:48 PM

The Cellar overlord toils tirelessly while we post away in blissful ignorance.

Now it has a spell-checker.;)

Undertoad 03-12-2006 12:48 AM

I think all the basic problems are found, now it's little things like the Cellar tag.

What do you think of the "15 minutes ago" variety of stating the time of posts and threads? I've turned it on to see whether we like it.

Elspode 03-12-2006 01:07 AM

Awesome, I love it!

UT, you are too damn much. Up all night, doin' it right!

It pretty much solves my biggest problem with keeping up with everything. The "New Posts" thing never really worked for me. That and what ashke is about to say.

ashke 03-12-2006 01:20 AM

Yay, the new post results are so cool: "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts."

UT thankee.

Undertoad 03-12-2006 01:24 AM

The system should become a little better at figuring out what you've seen and not seen.

The quick-reply box is back to 5 lines! Some changes revert every time you upgrade, unless you re-apply them.

The WYSIWYG editor is redone and has more features.

There are a lot more administrative changes which will make it easier for me to get rid of spam and ban spammers.

lumberjim 03-12-2006 07:22 AM

links dont seem to open a new window anymore. also, i dont like new way new posts works. once i read it, it no longer shows up? sorry to be a malcontent, but i used that method of browsing a lot.

I hope so, I got 125 results on my last "New Posts"! Yikes!

But it looks pretty good.

richlevy 03-12-2006 03:55 PM

I was wondering. Now I get '41 minutes ago', or '1 hour ago' instead of a time stamp. It's pretty cool, but of course I wonder if '2 hours ago' really means '2 hours and 45 minutes ago'.

However, when I opened the edit reply screen. the posts underneath it say (8 hours ago 8:25 am). It appears that I am getting different display behavior on the reply page than the standard thread view page.

Interesting.

slang 03-13-2006 02:55 AM

Everything seems to work fine from here.

The new edit format works better too.

capnhowdy 03-13-2006 04:04 PM

Seems fine to me but I haven't really explored yet. I figure if UT thinks it's good, then I think it's great.
I really think now that I would participate in the Cellar even if it went to USPS corresondance. No shit. I love you guys/gals.

xoxoxoBruce 03-13-2006 09:00 PM

I'm getting error messages on some of the threads, I click on.
Some do, some don't. Some names I can click on and get the profile and some I can't.
I thought it might be a pop-up blocker problem, so I tried the ctrl key. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't?

BTW, did you notice Marv's post in today's Iota about having trouble reaching the Iota since Friday?

lumberjim 03-13-2006 09:05 PM

upon reflection, i think i liked the time and date showing on the post better the 'ago' stuff.

I like both, which is what appears beneath the 'Reply to Thread' screen.

Undertoad 03-13-2006 09:36 PM

They say it may take a day for some of the cached old scripts to go away, B.

Anyone else on the ago stuff? I'm looking for consensus here

I prefer the time stamp to the ago. But can adapt to the ago just fine if others prefer it.

Kitsune 03-14-2006 09:06 AM

Kinda weird, but I noticed that the buttons in the reply window seem to break when the "errors on page" notice is listed. Clicking on font buttons, smilies, etc, all result in nothing in both IE and Firefox.

I think it might be a java thing. Has anyone else experienced this?

Elspode 03-14-2006 09:27 AM

I still like the "ago".

On another note, when I click on the Link icon while drafting a message, it only asks me for the URL, and not the text first, then the URL, as before. Am I doing something wrong, here?

Yeah, that's what I was talking about when I said I couldn't edit my posts. That seems to have gone away now, but I can't tell you why or how.

Care to share what version of Java you're running? I'm at 1.4.2 and I'm going to try upgrading to 1.5.06.

Well, that didn't do it. Still buttonless.

I'm running 1.5.06. I still am getting run time error messages, though, asking me if I want to debug. I just click "no." I do have my buttons and can edit my posts now. I don't know what changed, other than UT working some magic. But that magic should have worked for you too?

Undertoad 03-14-2006 11:27 AM

Your cache still contains old copies of scripts that have now changed. Clear your browser cache and start over, is my advice.

busterb 03-14-2006 12:43 PM

Sounds right. Once on another board someone told me, don't edit your post after a mod does. I'm thinking whf. Because the time stamps don't jive. Her browser wasn't refreshing at every visit to page. BTW, on some boards have made a post with name of program, and a mod ask, got a link? WTF! Google is " was" your friend.

My cache clears with each browser restart, but I think I narrowed it down to the corporate proxy caching them.

Thanks, UT!

capnhowdy 03-14-2006 08:25 PM

I'm prolly the only dinosaur here that still lives in back o the woods dial up country, but everything is much faster down here. I love it. Love ya, UT. Not in that way. hee hee

xoxoxoBruce 03-14-2006 09:40 PM

I don't like the new link set up.:( I'll live with it, though.

Well done UT !

lumberjim 03-15-2006 10:26 AM

the search button doesnt work same with quick links and you have to hit edit twice to make it work, and it stopped formatting paragraph breaks agian. sux to be UT right now

Undertoad 03-15-2006 10:53 AM

I'm betting this is another caching issue because I had that same problem with the search button DURING the upgrade. I bet you visited during the upgrade problems and somehow cached some scripts then.

lumberjim 03-15-2006 12:18 PM

how do i clear it in firefox?

In the least obvious place. To go Tools, Options and select Privacy. Under that selection there is a tab labeled Cache. Click the "Clear Cache Now" button. Close the options and restart Firefox.

Lemme know if that does it.

lumberjim 03-15-2006 12:28 PM

did that.

search button still no worky

if this is all one line, the paragraph thing is still screwed too

Undertoad 03-15-2006 12:30 PM

You may have Javascript turned off in Tools-Options-Content, or partly turned off in the Advanced section under there.

glatt 03-15-2006 12:35 PM

I was having intermittent problems with the search button yesterday. Sometimes it would open, other times it wouldn't. Today I couldn't get it to open at all. I just enabled all javascripts options (firefox for XP) and still no go.

I'll see if I can figure out when it works, and when it doesn't.

Kitsune 03-15-2006 02:47 PM

I was replying to a post when Microsoft Word threw an exception, causing Windows to dump and bluescreen. In the process, I lost a very important political rant that I was sure would have finally proven my point and guaranteed my victory in the argument. Also, my mouse freezes now and then despite replacing the MS drivers.

And my ass itches.

(sorry - I just feel bad for UT who seems to be encountering so many issues with this upgrade. We've all been in software hell, before. Good luck to you, sir!)

When I use Firefox, I open each thread in a new tab. In some tabs, I can open the search box, in others, I can't. It's weird. I see no pattern. Except in the first tab, I seem to always be able to open the search box.

Clodfobble 03-15-2006 03:03 PM

Fairly unimportant bug: The "Quick Links" link does nothing for me when clicked on from a "New Posts" search, but it works from any other page.

Edit: Wait, I lied. It works on some thread pages, but not on others. Don't see a pattern.

Undertoad 03-15-2006 03:16 PM

Mmkay, how about now?

(I'm like an eye doctor... better now, or better now?)

marichiko 03-15-2006 03:33 PM

I still can't do links anymore except by posting the entire url. I can't do that nice little put in a word and give the link. Same problem LJ has, I think. I try clearing cache and now my e-mail isn't working either. The e-mail is not your prob, UT, I know. Just feeling a tad frustrated at the moment. Probably not as frustrated as you are feeling, though!

I am really loving the "Posts below this line haven't been updated since you were last here, but there's stuff you haven't seen in them" thingy.

Very, very helpful for me.

I might even be able to start reading at work. The old time sensitive New Post search was annoying.

Oh, and what does "Switch Editor Mode" do in the WYSIWYG editor, other than change the background color?

Undertoad 03-16-2006 09:07 AM

Switch editor mode: put in some formatted text and change modes, and you'll see.

I had not noticed that the up-down arrows there next to "switch editor mode" actually changes the size of the quick reply box.

This vBulletin version is the best ever, I gotta hand it to them, they have really done a nice job with it.

wolf 03-16-2006 09:29 AM

Oooooooh.

Now I get it.

Elspode 03-16-2006 02:33 PM

Am I the only one who still can't get the Earth/Link icon to do what it did before, namely, ask for the text you want to have as a link, then ask you for the url you wish to link to in a second popup?

xoxoxoBruce 03-16-2006 02:47 PM

I can't.:(

Search button seems to always be working now.

Whatever you did, thanks.

Undertoad 03-16-2006 03:11 PM

Just highlight the text you want to link, and then hit the link button. It'll ask what you want for an URL. Hit OK and your link is done.

Elspode 03-16-2006 04:43 PM

Hey...that's kinda cool. Not exactly self-explanatory, but cool nonetheless.

Thanks, UT!
