Do you really need an IGNORE feature?

Aren't you capable of just ignoring on your own?

I mean, they are only words on a screen, and can't really hurt you.

That's right up there with "There's nothing wrong with spam, just delete it."

I'm capable of doing arithmetic on my own too, but I still use a computer.

even with a cashier...? I wish I had a blackberry to help me make sure I got the right change for a dollar... :D

SteveBsjb 03-29-2006 06:14 AM

They still make calculators too, Dev. You can get a good one for like $4.00. If you're worried about change for a dollar, a blackberry may be overkill.

I think your sarcasm detector may be malfunctioning... may want to check the batteries... :biggrinba

I know, I just wanted to acknowledge your post in some manner. It's early here.

SteveBsjb 03-29-2006 06:31 AM

Well it's still early. And my roommate woke me (accidently) when she got home from work at 5:00am. Should I start working or hope to nap for an hour?

Stevonez 03-29-2006 06:37 AM

me... I'm off to a friends house... we're gonna do a little fishing behind his house... catch up later... :joint:

SteveBsjb 03-29-2006 09:17 AM

Nice, wish I were fishing today. Headed off to an appointment for business soon. Good luck out there. Come back with a good fish story.

SteveBsjb 03-29-2006 09:22 AM

Regarding spam vs. ignored posts...

Spam is rarely written specifically about me, and if it was it wouldn't be read by a number of on-line individuals that know me. Spam is generic, another good reason to block it.

Ignored messages on a message board that I play on COULD be about me. I'd rather have the option to read and ignore any post or thread that pops up.

Rock Steady 03-29-2006 11:11 AM

The messages from the newbies are improving. But, in some ways they were worse than SPAM in that they were so attention whoring and content-free. I work at an intense software engineering job at a high-profile yet stealth early stage company. I like to take a quick break and cherry pick salient topics here. BS topics and Bumping are really annoying.

We support each other thru ups and downs of sigificant-other insanity, kids stuff, job situations, court appearances, jail time, 12 stepping, car buying, personal anxieties, and more.

I'm kind of allergic to CBOL, AFK, BRB, and so forth. I don't feel like I am talking to real people when they use chatspeak.

So, let's get into some real stuff. Dev_of_AG, when did you stop beating your wife? SteveBsjb, can I borrow your red dress? And flint, when are you going to tell them to "take this job and shove it"?

Well, my watch does run PalmOS, so I have Parens installed. That said, being able to count change is a good skill to have too.

On a related note, I was just given the option of getting a free blackberry at work. I chose to go ahead and get one. Mistake or not?

SteveDallas 03-29-2006 04:05 PM

I'd say that largely depends on whether they expect you to have it surgically implanted in your hand and answer your email non-stop 24 hours a day.

If not then they look like nifty gadgets....

glatt 03-29-2006 04:13 PM

So far, there is no indication that they expect that of me. I am slightly concerned that there might be a slippery slope, but I don't see any signs of one.

It's actually kind of funny. My old boss insisted that I get a pager. She was always in a panic. After she left, I dutifully gave my new boss the pager number. The new boss has never paged me in 8 years. But I carry it anyway so family and friends can reach me. My work pays for it, so I never bothered to cancel the service.

The blackberry (if it ends up being the same as the one my boss got) looks pretty neat. It's basically a cell phone that also is connected to my work e-mail account. It's just slightly larger than my current pager.

Wow! Glad you acknowledged CBOL, though I don't think you know what it means.

And you can borrow the dress and the heels. I don't believe any of my threads were BS. It's only a message board. What makes certain threads more important than others?

Many of my threads are still being posted on.

Point being that a spellchecker can tell you if you've typed something that isn't a word, but usually isn't smart enough to tell you you've used the wrong word.

So it "wouldn't have any affect", "to all intensive purposes".

SteveBsjb 03-30-2006 11:35 AM

This is the stuff life is made out of.

JayMcGee 03-30-2006 07:06 PM

court appearances? jail time? ........

and the mind positively boggles at the images conjured up by 12 stepping......

Happy Monkey 03-30-2006 07:22 PM

It's a board about life.

JayMcGee 03-30-2006 07:25 PM

.... the Universe and everthing?

xoxoxoBruce 03-30-2006 07:27 PM

Someone made the comment "it's only a message board". It might appear to be true on the surface but it's not. It's really a community.

Like any American community, we welcome immigrants and respect their diversity....... until they fuck with what we've already got.
You've seen just a little bit of that already, but believe me it can get much worse when they(we) get rabid.
That's not a threat or even a warning but an explanation of how it works.

Undertoad holds the deed but he's quite tolerant, leaving it to the members to police themselves...... unless an individual becomes impossibly annoying.
In that case, he makes a phone call and a limo with blacked-out windows comes to your house a 3AM and your family disappears. :haha:

We even have a sub-culture in the "Internet" section. The "This is Not Porn" thread is inhabited by a group that seldom venture out on the board and when they do they seem to be nice people, they're just into their own thing.

So we'd like you to stay and contribute, but it's your call, whether you're comfortable in the community.

Calm down, I'm the only one here with jail time. I've posted in the past about how my second DUI led to a 30 day jail sentence, served 20 with good behavior credit. Jail was horrible, but at least I didn't hurt anyone with my car. When one corrections officer found out I had a CS PhD, he asked "what are you doing in here?" I said "Even smart people can make bad judgements."

Other inmates said I needed a street name, so I said Rock Steady, and they loved it. But, rooting for the Pistons against the Lakers in a California jail takes some toughness.

wolf 03-31-2006 12:58 AM

Actually, Rock Steady's not the only one. But I'm not droppin' dimes on nobody. If they wanna fess up, that's up to them.

Cheyenne 04-03-2006 09:27 PM

"I work at an intense software engineering job at a high-profile yet stealth early stage company."

Perhaps you should not log in from work. Not only is it unprofessional, it steals time = money from a company who is counting on you to work, not post on a message board.

To expect people to post for your "stolen moments from work" convenience is a bit self-indulgent.

Cheyenne 04-03-2006 09:46 PM

Second DUI!!!!!???

please let us know when your on the road so i can make sure my loved ones are off of it!

why not just take a gun and start shooting it in the air and hope you don't "hurt anyone with your gun"!!??

Take it easy, dude. I've already been thru this, but for the newbies, I always take public transit to games or events where I will be drinking. If I have my car with me I don't drink at all. It's a simple policy that takes care to implement.

The public transit between Oakland and Silicon Valley is horrible. But, I do it. I went to about 20 Warriors games and more events. Usually, I take the long 2 hour trip to go to the game. Going home I go south on BART to Fremont, and take a $60 taxi home.

At work, I skip the monthly beer and wine party when I have my car to drive home.

I've been doing this plan for a couple of years. I don't drink and drive anymore. These days a $60 taxi fare seems reasonable.

(Note: First DUI I was not drunk. 0.08% is under the influence. One is surprised how 0.08% doesn't even feel that buzzed.)
