Most Emotional Song?

Now, Emo has cast a negative light on just about all music with any scrap of emotion, but a good ol' power-ballad or even just a sad song still pwnz. What do y'all think are the most emotion-filled yet good songs ever?

Ruby Tuesday - The Rolling Stones
Here I Go Again - Whitesnake
House of Pain - Faster Pussycat
Anything off of Pink Floyd's The Wall
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Carmelita - Warren Zevon

Somewhere Out There - Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram
I Can't Make You Love Me If You Don't - Bonnie Raitt

anything by Supertramp

Beestie 05-11-2006 10:51 AM

I've got a whole list but I think what everyone picks as their most emotional song has more to do with what (or who) they associate it with.

But, just for fun, here's my number one:
Tomorrow, Wendy by Concrete Blonde actually a sad song that reminds me of a good friend who died of AIDS.

"Calling All Angels" - Jane Siberry

That was the song at the end of "Pay it Forward" after the kid is shot and all of the people are gathering for a vigil in front of his mother's house.

I'm still not sure if it was the song or the movie that might have caused a tear or two.:bawling:

Another is The Foggy Dew, which, while not the official anthem of Ireland, can probably be considered the same as "America the Beautiful" is here, although it is definitely more bellicose. If two people sing it at the same time, it's a duet. If ten people sing it at the same time, it's a brawl. If twenty or more people sing it at the same time, it's a revolution.

Ibby 05-11-2006 08:24 PM

Angie - Rolling Stones

Instrumentals:

Lotus Feet - Steve Vai
For The Love Of God - Steve Vai
Opus Pocus - Jason Becker
any guitar part from David Gilmour.

Of course when I sing it as Doggy Doo its always good for a laugh... unless it isn't.

Bruce Springsteen is the prince of tear-jerkers...Downbound Train, Living Proof, most of the Nebraska Album, etc.

Estranged by Guns N' Roses, WWOZ by Better than Ezra, Not Only Numb by Gin Blossoms, all stand out as exceptionally emotional.

The musical finale of Purple Rain, after the last verse but before the improvised coda, is another masterpiece.

smoothmoniker 05-11-2006 10:28 PM

"Broken Hallelujah", the Jeff Buckley version

Because it was relevant to this conversation... terrible advice. Try again later.

Ibby 05-12-2006 02:03 AM

Actually, the covers thread is newer than that post...

rkzenrage 05-12-2006 02:06 AM

Still bad advice... but nice hustle.

Ibby 05-12-2006 02:07 AM

I think I was agreeing with you, rk... *blinks* I dunno, its too hot to think here anyway.

rkzenrage 05-12-2006 02:10 AM

I misunderstood then, sorry.

Kagen4o4 05-12-2006 02:30 AM

i just re-read my post and i sounded like an asshole. i just love trent reznor so much...

DucksNuts 05-12-2006 05:56 AM

OMG Kagen, come here so I can belt you around a lil...you said asshole???

Ibby 05-12-2006 06:32 AM

I'm sorry, Kagen, but... I feel nothing but loathing for NIN/Trent Reznor. NIN practically embodies the angst-sludge I despise in modern music.

Kagen4o4 05-12-2006 07:52 AM

modern? its been around for 20 years. its really beautiful music. its not heavy or dark. its very emotional yet industrial

Ibby 05-12-2006 08:28 AM

See, its not as modern as, say, Green Day, but I find NIN indistinguishable from the multitude of other (to overuse a phrase) angst-sludge bands.

And when I hear industrial, I don't see a bunch of pale rockers in dark clothes etc, I get more of a... Dire Straits vibe. Industrial implies industry, which implies the working man. Listen to Industrial Disease or Money for Nothing by Dire Straits. That, to me, is industrial.

But anyway, yeah. NIN. I don't like them. Too angsty and... straightforward(?) for me. Maybe thats not the word. Something like that.

Asshole is too much, anyone who has been on for long has had a bout' with the demon Net-Nanny. S-ok. You dealt with it with class. I honor you.
I like a lot of Trent's music, just wish he handled himself outside of the studio better. (I know things).

BigV 05-12-2006 03:03 PM

Use Me -- Bill Withers
Ain't No Sunshine -- Bill Withers
Lean On Me -- Bill Withers

This is not my original order, but they do flow this way, don't they?

Trent wrote a great song...he just didn't know that he wrote it for Johnny Cash.

JC's version of "Hurt" and the accompanying video are absolutely, hands down, the most emotional four minutes of music/video ever created. Superb, sublime...I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

yeah i know what you mean. hes not very charasmatic live either.

the only thing JC changed in hurt was the word (crown of) shit to the word (crown of) thorns. that just wasnt needed. if the old fart cant say the word shit then he doesnt deserve to sing NIN.

ive heard just enough trent bashing from you folks.
