As a pedestrian, I see this and cringe. It's a war zone out there.

I had something similar (but a near miss) happen to me many years ago.

I was walking down the sidewalk in the Loop area of downtown Chicago. Suddenly there was the sound of a revving engine from a parking garage across the street. A sedan came charging down the ramp, directly across the street, pushed between two parked cars, hit the side of a building, tore down the sidewalk (towards and then past me! I ended up between this car's path and the street) into the next intersection, t-boned a passing car, and fetched up aganst a stanchion for the El. They took the occupants of the t-bone victim off on back boards. Woman driving the car (apparently unhurt) claimed her accelerator stuck.

They don't have vehicle safety inspection in Illinois.

Something similar: I witnessed a vehicle attempting to park suddenly jump the curb, smash into the nearby brick building at an angle, then push itself against the wall as the tire squealed away. This caused it to align with the sidewalk that ran alongside the business and scrape along the wall despite the wreck and only stopped once it wedged itself between the building and a brick pillar, forcing the engine to stall. The woman driving (obviously with child, no less) claimed the car "did it on its own as she hit the brake". When I approached, she was actually trying to restart the car to move it and she wouldn't stop until I removed the keys from the ignition and took them away from her. (Shock, perhaps? Two popped tires and a brick column threatening collapse didn't hold her back.)

The police arrived, one of them noting that this was a common, almost daily occurance as people mistake pressing the gas for the brake pedal. I was in awe. I don't feel too comfortable on the roads, anymore.

Yes, but the view is totally different through the windshield. You miss a lot of the subtleties that way.

This reminded me of an 'accident' that happened in our driveway when I was in high school. A friend's mom pulled up behind my dad's truck in our driveway to drop me off. As I walked up the driveway, I heard a bonk and the truck lurched. WTF?? My dad, who was working in the garage with the door up, came barreling down the driveway...that truck was his baby. Friend's mom was bright red, she forget to R, instead of F. :blush: No major damage, but my dad talked about that for a long time. Probably because friend's mom was a gorgeous blonde...:D

I grew up on a house on a hill , steep drive ways all around the cove , it was not un commen for a car that was a streight shift to roll down a drive way running into what ever it just felt like ,
Once some friends and I watched it happen in slow motion ,
Slow roll , then it hit the hill and WHOOSH , SMASH !!!! Right into a caddy !
We lost a few lite ploes that way .

Ok, I know I am probably a very, very sick person that is most certainly on a direct path to Hell........ but did anybody else do the inappropriate giggle when the person got hit?

I run 5-6 days a week. I have no trust in any driver out there. Anyone who runs with their back to traffic is a fool. I'm always amazed at the hosility I will encounter when running. I trust no one. I run behind cars I know are intentionally trying to let me pass in front of them. I won't make eye contact. What I'm doing is not a social event. I can not allow myself to get into a guessing game with drivers. I allows assume they have the right of way. And sometimes when you refuse their gesture they get angry. But I don't want to be street hamburg.

You're on "their" roads, acting as a distraction. How dare you jog along side a piece of infrastructure designed only for automobiles! How dare you threaten their way of life, their commute, their livelihood!

After being run off the road several times (even while riding in the designated lane), I think it might be worse on a bicycle. :(

You're right....pedestrians are annoying but basically squishy with no sharp corners. On the other hand, you bicycle bums are a menace, with all those hard parts and sharp corners. Why you could scratch my paint or even blow out my tire when I run over you, which is pretty damn inconsiderate.:p

When somebody blows through an intersection against the light (which is what happened here; watch the traffic flow) it's not gonna matter much which way you're facing...

I'm not so sure about that. It might be nice to not see it coming.

Just saw the video; man that's brutal.

It's no picnic in a car; I've been turning left with the light, excellent light conditions about eight in the morning, and had some yoyo going the opposite way slalom around my nose. Where was his head, I wonder? He had at least half a block to see me. There's an abbreviation for such people losing situational awareness wayyy on down the block: driving HUA.

T-boned another guy once. We were on the main thoroughfare and he shoots out in front of us from a mall entrance. Totaled his machine; we drove away with our grill stove in and a headlight cell smashed. As he shot out in front of us I had just enough time as my right foot went from accelerator to brake to think, "I don't believe anyone could be so stupid!" Stood on the brakes, hit him going twenty or so, down from thirty-five or forty, right in the soft spot ahead of the driver's side door.

In the book "Zodiac" by Neil Stephenson, Sangamon Taylor describes the proper way to ride a bike in traffic. "Most people will tell you to assume that drivers can't see you. That's bullshit. I assume I'm wearing fluorescent clothes, and there's a million-dollar bounty going to the first driver who manages to hit me. And I ride on that assumption."

I'm sure the quote's way off. I don't have the book here. But that's the attitude.

The sickening thing about that video is that the pedestrian saw what was coming -- he starts to run about 3 steps before he's hit.

If he'd looked before he heard the crash....like before leaving the center island,... he'd seen it coming. The car coming straight at him was hauling ass, did he think it was going to suddenly stop? No, he never looked. Probably didn't even know the light was changing.:rolleyes:
