7/25/2006: Two-toned lobster

http://cellar.org/2006/twotonelobster.jpg

Both xoB and axlrosen sent along this item which was also Boing Boing'd. You can surely get your bibs and miniature forks out for this two-toned lobster. From the full story:
Quote:

[Maine lobsterman]Robinson donated his unusual catch to Maine's Mount Desert Oceanarium, where experts were able to shed some light on the find. Two-toned lobsters, they explain, are rare but not unheard of.

The shells of American, or Maine, lobsters usually sport a combination of yellow, red, and blue pigments. But the animals grow symmetrically, with each half of the body developing independently of the other.

In the case of Robinson's catch, half of the lobster's shell was lacking the blue pigment, giving it the appearance of having been cooked.

All this makes Robinson's fifty-fifty find one for the record books, the Oceanarium's staffers say. The aquarium has received only three two-toned lobsters in 35 years, they note, and the odds of finding one that's exactly half and half is about 1 in 50 million.
One of the earliest IotDs was a blue lobster so apparently this pigment confusion in lobsters just happens every once in a while.

It reminds one of the original series Trek episode :whtblk: | :blkwht: And begs the key question: are lobsters racist? We need to know!

That is so amazing. It looks fake. It's such a perfectly strait line right down the middle.

I'd hit (i mean eat) it!

Trilby 07-25-2006 11:43 AM

How long before someone mentions drawn butter? Guess someone already did! I'd never, ever eat something like that. Look at it! :vomit:

Pancake Man 07-25-2006 11:44 AM

That's not a happy lobster.

Hoof Hearted 07-25-2006 11:56 AM

I think that is an example of a chimera. I have read about it (chimerism) on the horse BBs, but that usually involves horses that are brindle in color.

mmmmmmmm butter.

You really shouldn't try to cook lobster in a microwave without a turntable.

Spexxvet 07-25-2006 12:32 PM

Yeah - that thing looks half-baked, to me.

capnhowdy 07-25-2006 04:06 PM

I wonder which side tastes best. You guys are always making me hungry.

Pancake Man 07-25-2006 06:19 PM

Would that be white meat or dark meat?

xoxoxoBruce 07-25-2006 07:38 PM

That's a special lobster. You can't cook a special lobster all at once.

chrisinhouston 07-25-2006 07:40 PM

I think I saw this plot on Star Trek, the guy who was half white and half black. He caused all kinds of problems!

bluecuracao 07-25-2006 08:28 PM

One day, all of lobsterkind will be two-toned...

milkfish 07-25-2006 08:38 PM

The lobster's just getting ready for Halloween, that's all.

xoxoxoBruce 07-25-2006 10:57 PM

Or Phantom of the Lobsterpot.

wolf 07-25-2006 11:04 PM

Wasn't that an episode of Scooby Doo?

Trilby 07-26-2006 08:36 AM

How come nobody has used the :lobstah: smilie yet?

Ibby 07-26-2006 08:47 AM

Ibby 07-26-2006 11:25 PM

MsSparkie 07-30-2006 04:42 PM

Could it be it was half cooked on it's side dipping it into boiling hot water that had stopped boiling....smooth surface...making that straight line?

Everyone here is always skeptical of everything, so just joining in the skepticism...LOL
