I was reminded of this post when I came across this reference to Undertoad in The Word Spy.

Any other good stories behing the User Names of others in the Cellar?

P.S. I remember that Hubris Boy tried to start a thread like this before, and that it got way off-topic before the good stories got posted. That thread was so rotten, but the original idea was so good, it is given another chance here.

Sorry it didn't meet your approval. :p

You can find my story here.

Sycamore Alert Status has changed to purple due to my stupidity.

Nic refers to the NIC of the domain registry. I just thought it would be a good nick name for a Network Interface Card.

Didja think I was Nic Robertson? .... LIVE from Afghanistan!

I thought it was some kind of ironic play on the whole concept of nicanames....very deep and meaning ful *coughcough*, geez you had to go and destoy that =p
My best friend's last name is panther - what can i say? Some people have all the luck.

middlefunger 03-15-2002 09:23 AM

Do you care? I don't know, but, I'll tell you anyway

my handle is actually a play on my real name: M F Unger. I was grouchy one day playing Day of Defeat, and decided that I wouldn't be terribly blatant about the fact that I was pissy. It's just kind of stuck, since I'm too lazy to think of anything else. And, in regards to the Fark ad (I know its a diff. thread, but, see above re: my nick), it worked. I'm glad that I've found a relatively small board that I can get to know people at. Kuro5hin is interesting b/c there are SO many people, and fark is, well, fark. But, it isn't often that you can have meaningful discussions with people and actually know who they are (as much as we can actually know each other w/o face to face, extended contact). So, to the Cellar, you guys r0><0r5.

sapienza 03-15-2002 11:47 AM

I'm just a lame-o with an 8-character last name. Started out as my university email login and now it's just my login everywhere ... though when I'm not going by sapienza, I go by Sam Jooky, but that's a *completely* different story.

sap... you know the rest.

Sperlock 03-17-2002 09:36 AM

Nothing too exciting for mine - I just found it while playing Ultima 5. Found this small little island with a sign on it, saying that it was the island of Sperlock the Strange. I liked the name and have used it ever since.

Stress Puppy 01-05-2003 10:22 PM

Because I'm so sure you all care....

I got this name from a magnetic poetry kind of thing. I spaz out about some stupid shit every now and then, and my girlfriend, who was working in the cafe where I work with me at the time, found the phrase in this Microsoft-oriented magnetic poetry thing I'd found in the "Take this stuff home for free box"....

Anyway, it was an extra stressful time for me, and I liked it... so yeah. There you go.

slang 01-05-2003 10:39 PM

Because I know no one gives a rat's....

Slang is a shortened version of my birthname. Sometime in the third grade, after the teacher just couldnt pronounce my very easily pronouncable name correctly, I bagged it and morphed into slang.

I've worked directly with hundreds of people over the years and many of them dont even know my real name. I like that.

:)

damn slang. you forgot the punchline. :)

A friend of mine is a writer/producer on the series, Farscape. I stole my name from him.

Did you ever finish telling that pantyhose story Hubris related a while back?

99 44/100% pure 01-08-2003 09:47 PM

That's from the .56% for which I'm valiently trying to compensate. It'll all come out in group therapy, and by then it will be ancient history. Fodder for the memoirs -- sorry, you'll have to buy the book, folks.

SteveDallas 01-09-2003 08:25 AM

[gets out a magnifying glass, vainly searching for the 0.56%]

elSicomoro 01-09-2003 10:24 AM

Alright kb, er, SteveDallas...time to explain your new name.

I thought the transformation was a delusion. Glad I'm sane again. :)

Griff 01-09-2003 12:28 PM

Bloom County reference....Sycs too young? Loved that strip.

elSicomoro 01-09-2003 06:14 PM

Ah, I remember Bloom County, but not that particular person/thing/whatever.

wolf 01-09-2003 06:15 PM

He was the human.

(Third strip up from the bottom)

elSicomoro 01-09-2003 06:32 PM

Ah, okay...I remember him vaguely now.

(C'mon Griff...I may be young, but not that young...I only wish. :) )

SteveDallas 01-09-2003 10:19 PM

Aww jeez... if you don't remember Bloom County, I can't hold that against you... but I'm surprised somebody would remember it and not remember Steve Dallas.

As I explained in another thread, my original nick was a relic of an earlier, more innocent millenium when The Cellar was only accessible by modem and I didn't have any privacy concerns about spreading my real name around. I felt in today's environment it was time for a change.

Aw, come on Steve...I'm a relative youngun. :)

I knew about your post regarding privacy...I just didn't know who SteveDallas was at first.

Because I'm an inveterate punster -- and if the pun is both brutal and esoteric, so much the better.

"'Think nothing of it; I like unclogging drains this way,' said Tom succinctly."
