Meet Lilith- A modern woman for ancient times
 

Lillith is the archetypal Unshackled Woman who refuses to be controlled. Lillith passionately claims her personal power, stands firm on her convictions, and is driven by an internal motive. She was considered a Divine Lady in Sumerian texts. She is also referred to as Handmaiden to the Goddess Inanna and is woven into her mythology and the story of the sacred huluppu tree, or the Tree of Life. She is a largely misunderstood archetype who has been called Poetess of Darkness, Imp of Impetuosity, and Occasional Serpent of Seduction. Lillith is the personification of the restless sea. She is deeply committed to her personal freedom and keeps her moral strength alive.

Being governed by the number eleven, a master number, suggests leadership through struggle, sacrifice, and even martyrdom. The number also symbolizes an archetypal gateway through which Lillith passes as she claims her individuality and takes charge of her own Self. Numerologically, Lillith is connected to the sensitivity of Isis and the wisdom of the Priestess (since one plus one equals two, but also because Isis' glyph is 1111 and Lillith's is 11).

Symbolized by Tarot Strength, she turns to her instinctual nature and sacrifices ego strength for a different type of strength. Lillith is both fearless and untamed and she roams freely in the wild. In Tarot symbolism, she is seen taming a lion. In the Thoth deck, Aleister Crowley calls her Lust, indicating that the Lillith archetype is in full command of the female sex force. She is an enchantress living in the undiluted multiplicity of the spiritual force. She has a mysterious power that is permanent, direct, and instinctual. We learn that "strength and experience are required in dealing with instinctual drives if one is not to be overwhelmed or carried away."

Lillith's energy is anchored in the Sun in Leo. Fiery and fixed, her energy is deliberate and dramatic. She is unabashedly self-possessed. She functions from a place of personal dignity. Lillith has many qualities. She is generous, youthful, self-assured, and affectionate. She is emotionally exuberant and displays a dramatic approach to life. She is willing to express herself and is active in her endeavors. She is fond of children.


This description sounds like modern woman to me. She makes Eve look passive aggressive.


Who was Lilith in myth? Was she Adams first wife? Or is she fodder for another Dan Brown book?

The background and purpose of The Alphabet of Ben-Sira is unclear. What I find offensive is that owls always show up as partakers of evil. Hense the icon of Lilith.

I find the myth of Lilith to be facinating. More facinating than the myth of Eve.

It makes more sense even from a psychological stand point too.

According to the myth, God’s first attempt at creating humanity resulted in an androgynous being that was both male and female, joined as one. Could this be a symbol of the integrated personality of Jung, where the male Animus and the female Anima are joined in full cooperation? In the story, however, God thought twice about this model and eventually split the two halves, creating one in the shape of a man, (Adam) and another as a woman (Lilith). Both were said to have been formed from the dust of the earth, and should have been considered equals, but Adam chose to deny the equality of Lilith and strove instead to dominate her. It is here that the rift begins that has wounded both men and women through the ages.

Lilith got a bum rap because the "reality" of her was unsuited to an inherently misogynistic, overtly paternalistic theology. She got bumped for a female archetype that was submissive and naughty.

With Eve, Man got a scapegoat for the ages.

Btw, St. Mary Magdalene is honored as Equal-to-the-Apostles in the Orthodox Church, and the Orthodox hagiography of her does not mention her ever being a prostitute. Probably not something anyone really cared to know, but I mention it because most people are only familiar with the Roman Catholic version.

Smithsonian Magazine had an article about Mary Magdalene a couple months back. It showed how MM was Jesus' closest confederate and the one that talked to him in the tomb after the resurrection.
It went on to explain hove the Roman church convinced people MM was a slave and whore to discredit her. That way the male line would dominate the Roman church.

I don't know if it's true or not, but an interesting read for me because I have no stake in it, either way.;)

It was a while ago, but I vaguely recall noting the ratio to be around 10:1 ... 15:1 if you only counted straight men. The number of straight men over 35 was approaching 0.

I've been to an Indigo Girls concert (Paula Cole opened) and, surprise, they let me in. I had a ticket.

On the flip side, I've attended a concert where the ratio was about 10:1 gay-men-to-women... The Pet Shop Boys.


Only major event I've ever been to where there was a looooong line for the men's restroom and no line for the women's. It was awesome.

Does that mean that gay men sit down to pee?:D
