couch, sofa, divan

which do you have? what are they? why?

Cloud 05-26-2007 11:39 PM

I love these little regional language marker oddities. I use couch and sofa, interchangeably. My parents sometimes referred to them as "davenports."

I have a futon. :)

xoxoxoBruce 05-27-2007 12:30 AM

Settee.

Urbane Guerrilla 05-27-2007 12:31 AM

It's really a futon with a foldable frame.

Beestie 05-27-2007 01:47 AM

I'm not sure what it says about me that not only do I not know the difference between a couch and a sofa but that I have no freaking idea what a divan is but it sure is saying it loudly.

piercehawkeye45 05-27-2007 02:21 AM

Is this just like the soda or pop argument?

Flint 05-27-2007 08:44 AM

People are arguing about soda vs. pop? I've seen a map of a national survey on that subject.

The reason I thought of this thread: last night my wife asked me to get a quilt off of "the ottoman" and I said "the footstool?" and it made me think of how my grandmother calls a couch a "divan" ... my wife said that couch to sofa to divan is a hierarchy of fanciness.

And I guess an ottoman is a fancy footstool.

"Davenport?" ... where are your folks from, Cloud?

"Settee" ... I like that one. That gives me a chuckle.

Edit: My wife says "settee" trumps "divan" in the fanciness scale.

Spexxvet 05-27-2007 09:13 AM

Couch. And we call an Ottoman a Hassock.

California, by way of Kentucky and Missouri. It might just be an old-fashioned word, rather than a regional variation. they were born in the nineteen-teens.

wolf 05-27-2007 09:56 AM

I have interchangably, couch/sofa. More often couch, though.

xoxoxoBruce 05-27-2007 10:40 AM

Don't forget the late bloomer of the 50's, sectional.

lizzymahoney 05-27-2007 10:46 AM

Ah, but sectionals are so, um, done, don't you think?

lol

Sofa sounds nicer than couch. Sofa is mellifluous while couch is guttural. I've used all of these words, but then I've lived in several places.

monster 05-27-2007 01:37 PM

settee or sofa. Settee is the main Brit term, I think.

Clodfobble 05-27-2007 04:51 PM

Couch, but only if it is three cushions wide--the one that's two cushions wide is a "loveseat."

Second.

Eastern Wisconsin calls it soda and western Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota call it pop. It has gotten people into some pretty intense arguments. Along with the bubbler/water fountain argument.

I usually stay out of them (I actually call it a drinking fountain) but if you are in the right mood it is fun to instigate it and then watch.

DucksNuts 05-27-2007 08:01 PM

Couch + loveseat with Ottoman.

Bed Settee is a couch that converts to a bed, as does a Futon, but they dont fold out, they fold flat.

Soft Drink...not soda or pop.

Actually *Soda Water* is a great mixer.

We have a couch.

bluecuracao 05-27-2007 09:26 PM

But...it looks like a sectional. ;)

I wish I had your couch, it looks really comfy and it's a good color. Silly me, I went along with MB's choice of couch. It was white. Was.

Aliantha 05-27-2007 09:59 PM

As you can see from that pic, we have pale timber floors. Most of our furniture is rosewood, so we've gone with chocolate for the couch and floor mat. I would have loved off white or cream for the couch and mat, but with two kids and a husband who is housework challenged, I thought it best to go for the other side of the spectrum. :)

xoxoxoBruce 05-27-2007 10:27 PM

Yup, looks like a sectional to me.

Aliantha 05-27-2007 10:47 PM

We call them modular over here.

zippyt 05-27-2007 10:56 PM

A couch MUST have soft arms for sleeping ,
a sette is for old ladys to SEt in and discuss the flowers ,
a love seat is for lovers , But I can still sleep on a love seat Quite comfortably .

bluecuracao 05-27-2007 11:18 PM

Modular does sound better. But if I asked for that over here, they'd probably send me over to Ikea.

Aliantha 05-27-2007 11:19 PM

well they have some nice stuff at ikea, cept you have to put it together yourself.

bluecuracao 05-27-2007 11:23 PM

I have an Ikea office chair right in front of me, that still reminds me of the pain I went through assembling it. It IS a cool chair, though, and has held up for a few years.

DucksNuts 05-28-2007 12:36 AM

I love Ikea, but self assembly is a bitch!!

I have one of those huge PAX wardrobes, it was awesome planning it and picking out all the little extras...but I was cursing putting it together and will do so even more when I have to move house.

Speaking of putting things together...I put my new Treadmill together the other nite....what a heavy m f'ing thing that was!!!! 92kgs in the box and not a lot lighter outta the box (getting it out was half the battle)...silly independent woman that I am...I HAD to do it all by myself and feel quite smug when I run on it :D

Aliantha 05-28-2007 12:37 AM

Good girl!

bluecuracao 05-28-2007 12:48 AM

That's awesome. As a bonus, you probably burned a lot of calories just putting the thing together. :)

We have an IKEA wardrobe at home too, but not PAX, I don't think. The doors haven't been put on yet, and it's been...a long time. Ugh.

DucksNuts 05-28-2007 01:08 AM

The doors were soooo expensive, I have curtains on the outter sections and mirrored doors on the inner sections.

bluecuracao 05-28-2007 01:10 AM

They're a pain in the butt to align too--that's why they're still leaning against the wall. Hmm, curtains are a good idea.
