Would you ever post the contents of a private message?

If someone PMed you, would you post the message, or convey the information of the PM to the rest of the board?

theotherguy 05-29-2007 11:55 AM

No. Unless both parties were not opposed to it and it was relevant for the rest of the forum.

Cloud 05-29-2007 11:59 AM

Would I EVER?

Ever is a long time, so yes, I would if I thought it was appropriate.

Trilby 05-29-2007 12:04 PM

Only with permission.

Flint 05-29-2007 12:06 PM

Only if I was Spexx, and the PM was the one that prompted me to start this thread.

Griff 05-29-2007 01:03 PM

If I got an abusive PM I just might, although first I'd probably share it with UT or a moderator to see if we need to start ban proceedings.

Beestie 05-29-2007 01:30 PM

Never without the PMers consent.

In cases of personal safety or in matters with legal implications I would point it out to UT but I can't think of any reason to ever post it publicly.

Note to self: never PM Cloud with private info. :D

Shawnee123 05-29-2007 01:37 PM

I would not post, or divulge the contents of, or otherwise parade another's PM to me unless the PMer told me to or said it was OK. That holds true whether it was a nice PM, a mean PM, an abusive PM, a slammin' PM...whatever.

But I know there are those who don't live by that credo, which is equivalent to telling Miss McGillacuddy that Mark is chewing gum in class, only worse.

Flint 05-29-2007 01:53 PM

ha ha ha

glatt 05-29-2007 01:54 PM

Yes I would. And I have.

lizzymahoney 05-29-2007 02:00 PM

Nope. There are probably some circumstances where I would with permission of the author, but generally I wouldn't even paraphrase a private communication on a board.

Flint 05-29-2007 02:03 PM

Probably some of the most boringest posts I have ever seen on the internet are where somebody goes "so-and-so is abusing me and they should be banned" and posts a big string of PMs they supposedly got from someone. Snooozefest. That might be funnier on this site, though.

lumberjim 05-29-2007 02:20 PM

would and have.

would you ever considering manning the fuck up and saying what you mean? or would you prefer to continue to be a little weasley bitch about everything?

Flint 05-29-2007 02:24 PM

oh no you di'n't !!!

Eek. I hadn't thought of something like that. I might post something like that for either the sheer humor or the sheer fear!

Name calling? Insults? Why don't you say what you mean? Come on, Man up! What do you think I mean, that I'm not saying?

lumberjim 05-29-2007 03:10 PM

oh, i was just asking a general question! you didn;t think i was talking to YOU did you???

SteveDallas 05-29-2007 03:21 PM

I'd never say never--but it would have to be under extremely unusual circumstances.

rkzenrage 05-29-2007 03:29 PM

No. Not a kid.

A simple "no" would have been enough. Why throw in the judgmental crap?

You think I'm a kid?

rkzenrage 05-29-2007 04:57 PM

I was talking about myself, no one else.
If you read something into it, that is you, deal with it.

DucksNuts 05-29-2007 06:21 PM

Nah, its in Private for a reason :)

Would you ever relay what someone said to you via PM to another party via PM? :p

monster 05-29-2007 08:28 PM

If the PM was abusive and I thought it would be beneficial to all to share or be the only way to get it stopped, I might. But mostly I ignore anything unpleasant. I would never reveal personal details given in a PM, and go the moderator route first, but I think it's a form of bullying to be abusive in a PM. If you believe it's OK to say what you want to say, say it in public. Don't hide behind closed doors. And when people try to do that, then it's OK to rat them out if that appears to be a positive way forward

/gospel according to St. monster.

TheMercenary 05-29-2007 09:41 PM

Hell yea, I would and have. But only in the cases where people have lied on the general board and then pm'd something different. I don't like people who play all nicey and then pm something where they are attempting to spank you verbally.

Only to my attorney or hit man.

Delete, ignore, all better.
Trying to dissuade opponents and/or rally support, offstage, is so pathetic.

I got the idea there was a lot of that nonsense back when Mar*ch*o was on the board.

Hime 05-30-2007 09:54 AM

The example that glatt posted looked like a pretty obvious troll to me, so I might've posted it in that case, because, well, who cares about trolls?

In general, though, I wouldn't, unless I had the person's permission, and even then only if it was something that wasn't inherently private in nature -- like if I was just chatting with a friend through PMs and they happened to say something funny about, say, Pirates of the Caribbean, I might ask if I could share it with the rest of the class. If they had something funny to say about, say, TheMercenary*, though, that would be a bad thing to post.

On one forum where I used to post, we had some controversy over this issue. Someone got a PM from another user saying that he was using his presence on the forum to gather quotes and examples for an "expose" he was planning to write about the depravity and excesses of liberals on the internet. The person who received the PM posted it without saying who the author was, on the theory that we should know that our words might be taken out of context. I'm not sure if she did the right thing or not, but I guess I'd lean towards yes -- the person who claimed to be writing the book was being a troll.

*nothing personal, dude.

I'm guessing you've never heard of the policy of praising in public and punishing in private, neh? You strike me much more strongly as a public humiliator, for effect.

Aliantha 06-09-2007 02:26 AM

I sent someone a PM the other day asking why they've decided to antagonise me and they've yet to respond to it. I'm thinking about posting the contents of my pm here in the hope of getting some sense out of the situation.

rkzenrage 06-09-2007 04:08 AM

If it is who I think it is... last time I'll stick my nose into it, but I really think ignore is best, I really do.
From experience & I don't think they are worth it.
*done*

Aliantha 06-09-2007 04:14 AM

You're probably right rkz.

skysidhe 06-09-2007 09:15 AM

Only if it was inflammitory.

Clodfobble 06-09-2007 09:41 AM

[Dr. Phil]You don't want "some sense out of the situation", you want validation. You don't really think anyone will be able to make sense out of an antagonizer's behavior based on how you asked them about their behavior. You just want everyone to see what a good effort you're making to be friendly, and take your side of things. Everyone's posts already speak for themselves. So quit contributing to the negativity by repeatedly dredging it up.[/Dr. Phil]

Aliantha 06-09-2007 05:19 PM

I have not 'repeatedly brought it up', and I don't require validation (this is definitely not the place I'd come for if that were so), but thanks for your thoughts Dr Phil.

Drax 06-10-2007 10:23 PM

Any PMs sent to me are private conversations between me and another member. Under no circumstances would I post it.

Flint 06-10-2007 10:29 PM

What if I PMed you and dared you to post it? Would you pussy out?

Flint 06-10-2007 10:51 PM

lumberjim 06-10-2007 10:54 PM

It is absolutely imperative that this message gets out, but I just can;t get the configuration of my framitization module properly aligned with the dang ebuliancy tenant. So, I need you to go a head and post this for me, mkay? do it in the pm thread, mkay?

thanks, babe.

sincerly,

Marcus Aurelius

Drax 06-10-2007 10:58 PM

And I deleted his rather juvinile PM as soon as I reAd it.

lumberjim 06-10-2007 11:00 PM

so what you're trying to say is that you have no sense of humor whatsoever. ok...gotcha. here's a picture of a dog's balls for you:

http://www.chitchatpodcast.com/wordp.../dogsballs.jpg

Drax 06-10-2007 11:17 PM

Oh I have a sense of humor. Your PM simply wasn't funny, just stupid, and as for that pic...a pretty pathetic attempt to anger me.

lumberjim 06-10-2007 11:20 PM

anger you? please.

you have a sense of humor. of course you do. tell you what....i've got a great knock knock joke for you...

you start.

bluecuracao 06-10-2007 11:23 PM

:lol2:

(Sorry, Drax.)

You could've posted the PM...with um, edits. But it's too late now!

fresh doesn't get along with lj. I doubt it was sarcastic. lol

Aliantha 06-11-2007 02:51 AM

Most of what 'redneck jim' says should be taken with about a pound of salt...maybe two.

I'd just move along if I were you. It'll be easier. ;)

monster 06-11-2007 07:45 AM

Well I thought it was hysterical and I try really hard to hate lj, just so's I can assimilate. :p

lumberjim 06-11-2007 09:23 AM

try as you might....i'm just too loveable. even alianthia has begun acting as a kind of emmisary to those that tend to assume that i'm ripping on them personally.....when in fact i'm just testing their ......well...that's actually a secret.

nevermind.

Shawnee123 06-11-2007 10:03 AM

How would you know? I mean, what if you send a very personal PM, and that person forwards it to others...you'd never know, unless the party of the second part called you out on it. Even in the Cellar you have to learn to trust, no easy task. I guess it's just like IRL, there are people who can't wait to spread the latest gossip, and those who really do keep secrets in a vault. All we can do is hope we've trusted the right people. I'm not talking about dissin' PMs per se, just anything you share with a friend that maybe you don't want to be public knowledge. I think I've been lucky in the friends I've found here.
