Tax Free Day

Hmm, not sure if this was the correct place for this. Let me formally invite you to Tennessee this weekend. For all of your Clothing, Computer & School Supplies... No Tax is included on the referenced items. Unless you purchase a single piece of clothing that is $100 or over. You can purchase as much (clothes) as you want and not pay taxes. Also, computers up to $1500.00 are tax free. Not sure what most of your tax rates are, but ours is 9.25%. So it can be a big help.

Hey, Virginia's having that too today. But only on back to school stuff. No buying a tax free car. It's a good idea.

elSicomoro 08-03-2007 10:16 AM

Missouri's is today and tomorrow, and is similar to TN's. Our base sales tax is like 7%, but the municipalities can raise it higher. In the City of St. Louis, I think we're at 7.5%.

jester 08-03-2007 10:16 AM

Yeah, the real necessaties.

Flint 08-03-2007 10:20 AM

We also have a Tax-Free day for Back-To-School shopping, in Texas.

Uisge Beatha 08-03-2007 10:26 AM

I don't know exactly when New York's happens, but saving the 8.625% is nice. Get this, though - on this year's income tax return they expected us to report some of it (a specific time period) and pay the tax at that time. Um, doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose? Duh!

Bullitt 08-03-2007 10:30 AM

Aww only school supplies?! I was about to drive grandpa down there and avoid that whole inheritance tax nonsense.

xoxoxoBruce 08-03-2007 06:19 PM

It might if you use the inheritance for tuition, books and shit.

But wouldn't that mean, uh... er, offing Grandpa?

CART MASTER:
What?
CUSTOMER:
Nothing. Here's your ninepence.
DEAD PERSON:
I'm not dead!
CART MASTER:
'Ere. He says he's not dead!
CUSTOMER:
Yes, he is.
DEAD PERSON:
I'm not!
CART MASTER:
He isn't?
CUSTOMER:
Well, he will be soon. He's very ill.
DEAD PERSON:
I'm getting better!
CUSTOMER:
No, you're not. You'll be stone dead in a moment.
CART MASTER:
Oh, I can't take him like that. It's against regulations.
DEAD PERSON:
I don't want to go on the cart!
CUSTOMER:
Oh, don't be such a baby.
CART MASTER:

DEAD PERSON:
I feel fine!
CUSTOMER:
Well, do us a favour.
CART MASTER:

Ours is this weekend. It is 4 days long and ends today. I don't really see the value in it, you don't save that much unless you are buying big.

In Pennsylvania tax free shopping day is called "taking a road trip to Delaware."

Clothing, shoes, and non-luxury foods are already non-taxable. Regular state sales tax is 6%.

elSicomoro 08-05-2007 07:22 PM

That's one of the things I miss about PA, along with no tax on pharmaceutical items.

Thats why I love where I live. I'm literally walking distance to DE where virtually nothing is taxed! With Target, Lowes and a mall less than a 5 minute drive away, over shopping can be very dangerous.

xoxoxoBruce 08-06-2007 03:02 PM

And watch the prices in those border stores to see if they aren't just a little higher than deeper in DE.

yesman065 08-06-2007 05:39 PM

Its about the same - with the price of fuel they pretty much net out.

deadbeater 08-06-2007 05:50 PM

DE is where the credit cards companies are--because that state allow the credit cards to set interest rates up to about, oh, 100 times the constant e in percent.

elSicomoro 08-06-2007 06:03 PM

And PA actually expects you to pay tax on stuff you buy out of state...IIRC, it's like a 1% usage tax or some shit like that.

xoxoxoBruce 08-06-2007 06:07 PM

PA use tax is the full 6%. It's for businesses to pay tax on items they bought tax free for resale, but ended up using themselves in the course of their business.

elSicomoro 08-06-2007 06:27 PM

Ah...gotcha.

xoxoxoBruce 08-06-2007 06:31 PM

You may be right about the law saying PA residents are supposed to voluntarily pay tax on out of state purchases, it's just not "use" tax.

elSicomoro 08-06-2007 06:45 PM

Apparently, they do consider it a use tax in PA.

xoxoxoBruce 08-06-2007 07:01 PM

Ah, my bad... I stand corrected. They have expanded the "use" tax definition.

elSicomoro 08-06-2007 08:14 PM

I wonder how many people actually pay it...I suspect almost no consumers, but don't know about businesses.

yesman065 08-07-2007 07:03 AM

Is that different for businesses located in one state delivering goods or services to consumers in another?
