September 11, 2007: Burning man

http://cellar.org/2007/burningman.jpg

Well this is something you don't see all that often, and it's always striking. This 20minutos.es image is accompanied by the following Babelfish-translated text:
Quote:

A man of Rumanian nationality burns after sprinkling itself with gasoline and setting fire to bonzo before the seat of the Subdelegation of the Government in Castellon to protest by the economic situation of his family in Spain.
He set fire to bonzo!

Well one wonders what better economic situation his family will be in now. No word on the outcome of whether he lived or died.

Coign 09-11-2007 10:30 AM

I don't know who is more of an idiot, the guy who set himself on fire or the person trying to put him out with a child in hand.

the lady in the white t shirt seems very concerned that he's dropped his sandal. she's just going to fetch that for him.

monster 09-11-2007 10:54 AM

Seriously, that's awful. That he should feel so desperate as to do that to himself.

and now back to your regular programming...

...it's bad enough to do that to yourself, but to involve innocent animals is unforgiveable. As I scrolled through the images in barefoot's link, I came across three pictures with these captions. I took the liberty of translating.

Dos guardias civíles se acercan al inmigrante, todavía con llamas en su cuerpo
Two pleasant zookeepers helped the immigrant with the llamas and the carp

Un poicía y dos guardias civiles tratan de apagar las llamas
The fish and the zookeepers politely fought to appear with the llamas

Dos guardias civiles levantan al hombre, con las llamas ya apagadas
The nice keepers levitated over the homo and the llamas applauded

Sundae 09-11-2007 11:09 AM

Bravo monster, but you missed this one:

Las llasmas consumen por completo la camiseta del inmigrante.
The llamas completed consuming the foreign camel

A - I expected to see a celebration in the desert.

2 - How inconsiderate of the guy. We, at the Cellar, will choose our own way of cooking our IotD!

Do you think he had hair when he started?

IV - Who's horny, baby? You want my pants off that bad?"

monster 09-11-2007 11:24 AM

Liar, liar, pants on fire....

glatt 09-11-2007 11:27 AM

It's interesting how our bodies will revolt against our "higher reasoning" when we are doing stupid shit. His well laid plans for setting himself on fire were halted by his body once it felt the pain. Then all his brain was able to comprehend was "Oh, sweet Jesus, that hurts. Make it stop."

A wiser person would have predicted this and either completely doused themselves from head to toe in gasoline before lighting themselves so the job would be finished even when they had second thoughts. Or else they would have admitted the inevitability of defeat and had a fire extinguisher and some heavy blankets sitting on the curb next to them.

Cloud 09-11-2007 04:54 PM

I wish you had put a warning on this pic. I thought it was about Burning Man (the event). As a burn victim, trust me, the last thing I want to see is people on fire.

BigV 09-11-2007 05:08 PM

Sorry Cloud.

Cloud 09-11-2007 05:23 PM

ah well, no biggie really. I wish life came with a warning label.

morie 09-11-2007 10:38 PM

i dont get it: if he set himself on fire, why is he trying to extinguish it?

either his economic situation cant be that bad because he didnt care to finish the job, or he's doing a stunt for Jackass. can I get the burning t-shirt off in time?

and look how inconsiderate he is: shouldn't he at least have carried a sign saying "Kids, don't try this at home (unless you're a dumbass like me)" ?

sorry about the burns Cloud. i generally don't like to see people on fire but for people dumb enough to deliberately set themselves on fire, hey why not?

chrisinhouston 09-13-2007 07:32 AM

Well, I guess he never learned "STOP, DROP, ROLL!"

Cloud 09-13-2007 08:47 AM

. . . but make sure your children do, please.

Yes - think of the children!

TheMercenary 09-13-2007 01:31 PM

At least the dude with the kid didn't try to use the kid to put out the man, that might have been ugly.

Or alternatively, he staged his protest in a state of desperation and it hurt a damn sight more than he could actually cope with. I would imagine unless you have subjected yourself to strenuous mental control exercises, natural survival instinct would take over.
