Don't tase me bro!

I'm not sure whether it was "blow job" or "Skull and Bones" that moved him past protected speech. Watching Kerry here makes me realize that there was only one man less fit than him to be President.

Happy Monkey 09-19-2007 10:30 AM

The cops and the kid were asses, but I'm not sure what Kerry could have done. He tried to tell the cops that he was willing to answer the question.

Shawnee123 09-19-2007 10:37 AM

That was my take, too, HM.

skysidhe 09-19-2007 10:39 AM

Why didn't those cops just take him out of the room?

Cops are so trigger happy these days :(

Griff 09-19-2007 10:40 AM

To me, Kerry sounds very disconnected/ineffective.

skysidhe 09-19-2007 11:01 AM

ok I get what your saying Griff. He could have said, "stop that please" or "leave that young man alone" in a strong voice. He did wimp out.

Happy Monkey 09-19-2007 11:03 AM

Here's Kerry's statement:

I asked the police to allow me to answer the question and was in the process of answering him when he was taken into custody. I was not aware that a taser was used until after I left the building. I hope that neither the student nor any of the police were injured. I regret enormously that a good healthy discussion was interrupted."

It would have been cool to see a bit more of the '70s protestor Kerry, but I don't know if I could have taken a week of "Kerry attacks cops!" headlines.

SteveDallas 09-19-2007 11:10 AM

Don't get me wrong, I'm sympathetic to the guy.. it was definitely an overreaction on the part of the cops.

But the "bro" line at the end... it was just too funny/surreal. I predict the phrase will enter the common vocabulary soon.

"It looks like we're going to have to cut our budget by 25% for next year."

"Holy shit! That's impossible!!! Who came up with that??"

"Don't tase me bro, I'm just the messenger... talk to the CEO if you've got a problem."

finally, there's an explanation for all the votes he didn't get.

That is excellent. Let's all try to get it into our conversations today and see if it takes off.

For once everyone will actually know where a colloquialisim came from. You know how someone will say "where did that phrase ever come from" and inevitably someone will reply that they made that up back in 1984. Usually, I will. :)

He was removed for going over time, not his questions.
He resisted being removed and then being cuffed.
That is why he was tazed.
I think he was tazed too much, but the first time was fine.
You don't resist arrest. He had not been searched and the cops had no idea what he had on him, his level of training or what he was capable of/had in mind.
He needed to comply.
It is actually that simple.
I know this sounds odd coming from me, but he was out of line and resisted arrest, what do you expect the cops to do, buy him a brownie?

Huh, a situation where I actually agree with you.

I think a lot of people online who were upset about the incident have exaggerated ideas about how dangerous tasers are. It isn't what I'd call safe, sane and consentual, but it sure beats the good old-fashioned billy club or gun butt method.

Clodfobble 09-19-2007 04:33 PM

I found it interesting how many similarities there were between this and the episode in the college library (I think UCLA?) several months ago. Both of these guys kept yelling for attention from bystanders, and insisting, "I'm going to get up and walk out! I'll walk out!!" except not doing it. Even down to the lone girl screeching "Stop doing that!" in his defense.

I agree.

Griff 09-19-2007 04:44 PM

He was misbehaving. I have not seen a clear video yet but he was already taken down, so I'd think the taser was not necessary. Is this what comes from hiring people incapable of doing a job?

Happy Monkey 09-19-2007 04:48 PM

The cops were holding him down. A taser was not justified. Neither would have been billy clubs or gun butts. Or what tasers are supposed to be the replacement for, a pistol shot.

Because he was thrashing? Trying to dig in his pockets for who-knows-what? Kicking so hard that they could not remove him from the scene otherwise? You can't tell any of those things from that crappy video.

Certainly the kid was out to make trouble, that's evident from his tone of voice from the very beginning. And according to Kerry the kid "barged to the front of the line" before the camera even swung over to him. Maybe the cops overreacted, maybe they didn't.The bottom line is, you weren't there. For a sample reaction from people who were, listen to the large portion of the audience that applauds as they first try to escort him out.

1. the guy reminds me of spexxvet.

2. i'd have tased him right on the beanbag.

3. they only tased him because they weren't equipped with a ball gag. stfu, lispy!

4. some cops are just EMT's that got lucky.

5. Kerry couldn't take charge of that situation, so thank FSM he's not in charge of the US. Where the hell is Teddy Roosevelt when you need him?

Aliantha 09-19-2007 10:30 PM

I'm pretty sure it's Bush's fault he got tazed.

I think we should ask tw what he thinks.

lookout123 09-19-2007 10:33 PM

there were 7 vital minutes wasted reading a children's book...

Aliantha 09-19-2007 11:01 PM

yes, those minutes changed history.

Ibby 09-19-2007 11:59 PM

Fuck man I can't get over how people BS about him reading that book. If the president abandons a class full of kids with no fucking warning to do all that, its more of a victory for the terrorists. True, Bush shouldn't have just sat there with that fucking insipid blank look, but he should have finished the book he was reading them, the whole thing, then calmly left.

lookout123 09-20-2007 12:55 AM

i happen to agree with you ibby, but tw isn't around so i thought it was only fair to insert his usual cut and paste. george jr, mental midget, mba's... see there it goes again.

Six cops couldn't handcuff/ziptie one belligerent student and haul his ass out of the building without hitting him with a taser repeatedly?

Not buying it.

I wasn't there, and I know that six cops could easily have done it.

Some things you don't have to be there to know.

Flint 09-20-2007 10:29 AM

Who honestly doesn't believe that that the taser was used to "teach him a lesson" and not to restrain him?
If people think he needed to have a lesson taught to him, then they have no problem with it; but that's not what tasers are for.

Same difference. The important thing is it's something horrible to wake up to. Like my feet the other week.
