September 28, 2007: Transparent frog

http://cellar.org/2007/transparentfrog.jpg

From Pink Tentacle comes this item. A Japanese research team came up with the idea of a frog whose skin is see-through, so you can see its organs and blood, right through the skin. That way scientists can check the condition of those things without having to, you know, kill and dissect it. Which effectively ends a trial period for a frog...

Quote:

According to Sumida, the transparent frog is the result of breeding two specimens of Japanese brown frog (Rana japonica) that had a genetic mutation giving them pale skin. By selectively breeding their offspring, the researchers were able to create a frog that remains transparent for its entire life cycle. Most of the world's known transparent creatures live underwater, and transparent four-legged animals are extremely rare.
Oh, no, I just thought of something... could you see the frog's doody?! Or just a lump that moves through its body. I want a transparent frog.

Maybe a cousin of the two-headed turtle

Looks like he's made of rice paper.

Bet he tastes good.

Spexxvet 09-28-2007 09:44 AM

Will his innards get sunburned?

Saphyre 09-28-2007 10:51 AM

Does he still taste like chicken??

HungLikeJesus 09-28-2007 10:58 AM

Maybe this will become an alternative to dissecting frogs in class. You can just shine a bright flashlight on them instead.

And yet another:

I'm pretty sure that's a Chinese Water Dragon. They're capable of bipedal locomotion and can run across the surface of water, but I never saw one in therapy before.

The therapy is because she was married to the frog but after all his lies over the years, she could see right through him.

HungLikeJesus 09-28-2007 11:26 AM

Plus she was thinking, "Why am I married to this fat frog? Lizards have two penises!"

Coign 09-28-2007 11:42 AM

Kiss the frog and get a princess, my ass! All those frogs are liars, don't fall for thier empty promises. You will only end up with frog spunk on your lips.

Back when we had fish (i.e. before they all died from neglect) you could definitely see the fish doody in certain species before it exited the body.

But I'm really not seeing a lot of organs in that picture. Just looks like honeycombed skin/fat cells to me. Maybe the view is better from underneath.

Was that a Pushme-pullme turtle?

bluecuracao 09-29-2007 05:11 PM

John Waters once said the only thing that would be shocking to him would be transparent skin. Uh oh.

I wonder if those little things inside start to pop as you heat it in the microwave.

bullwinkle 10-24-2007 06:33 PM
