Aliantha 10-11-2007 02:13 AM

I agree that the quality of newbie lately has been pretty high (except for that one who thinks it's ok not to immunise).

It's great to see peeps fitting in so easily and so quickly.

Jimbo, it must be because you haven't been around so much to scare them off...

lumberjim 10-11-2007 06:24 AM

I liked vivant just fine. you dont agree with her personal philosophy, so she's a bad noob? thats kind of weak. she seems well thought out and polite enough.

DanaC 10-11-2007 07:08 AM

I'm assuming that Ali was joking?

Undertoad 10-11-2007 07:19 AM

It may be because we're getting dugg these days instead of farked.

SteveDallas 10-11-2007 08:30 AM

[asinine] BBS Sysop dares to suggest Farkers don't know how to behave. Everybody get your pitchforks and torches.

Undertoad 10-11-2007 08:46 AM

Hey it was just yesterday that I told my cow orkers that I was more proud of my four-digit Fark id number, than I was of my 3-digit Slashdot id number.

DanaC 10-11-2007 10:07 AM

and fark is...?

Undertoad 10-11-2007 10:24 AM

fark.com, a news aggregator where people formulate wise-ass headlines for news links. A great place for short attention spans, a poor place for community, but they have generated many internet memes.

added to the spell check dictionary: fark, aggregator, memes

queequeger 10-11-2007 10:35 AM

ok, and dugg?

barefoot serpent 10-11-2007 10:52 AM

digg {dot} com -- another aggregator

queequeger 10-11-2007 10:59 AM

ah, gotcha.

Undertoad 10-11-2007 11:11 AM

Well you're one of the quality and still relatively N00bish, quee, where did you come from?

Shouldn't that should be pitchfarks?

Never let anyone else ork your cows, Undertoad. Do it yourself, and make sure it is done right.

Sundae 10-11-2007 02:00 PM

I am quietly optimistic. Although smilies in sig lines should be discouraged [/oldfart]

Razzmatazz13 10-11-2007 02:06 PM

Aw :(

Mockingbird 10-11-2007 04:07 PM

I came here looking for something totally different, it was a complete mistake. I usually read boingboing.net rather than digg or any of the others.

theotherguy 10-11-2007 04:10 PM

Well, something different is certainly what you have here.

Cloud 10-11-2007 04:43 PM

as opposed to the "old" batch of noobs, which sucked?

:( -- former Noob

theotherguy 10-11-2007 04:48 PM

How long ago could you have joined and still be considered a n00b?

Cloud 10-11-2007 05:02 PM

well, there was a lot of discussion before about how the noobs suck, and the Cellar was going to hell in that little ol' basket, and . . .

but we did get some good ones recently, I agree

Yep. Joking. I must have forgotten to use a little laughing face, or maybe it was just you not getting my jokes...again.

Cloud 10-11-2007 07:03 PM

waaaaaaaaaaah!

I hate ambewlances!

(puts thinking cap on)

Ackshully, never have rode in 1. Guess I'm a good ducker!

monster 10-11-2007 09:00 PM

Agreed, muy funniez and artikul8 peeps.

Mockingbird and ZenGum both said they were searching for something a little odd. So was I when I found this place (and I believe I am equally awesome ...:p). Perhaps it's nuffink to do with being dugg or farked and everything to do with our somewhat unusual repertoire of topics? I believe I was searching for knitted genetalia.... Vivant, how did you get here?

I signed on in 1991.

Bruce, wolf, and UT still exclude me by making inside jokes about stuff that happened before I got here. :headshake :sniff:

lumberjim 10-11-2007 11:06 PM

i thought bruce was a noob relative you other 3?

Just found some IotD things I liked and poked into the forums. I lurked for a while before joining.

I have seen a few first posts, and I was tempted to welcome them, but it felt weird. I'm too N00by.
I'm wondering, when does one cease to be a n00b? Is it by post count? Threads started? Calendar-measured presence? Or some less quantifiable measure of being vaguely known to the general gang?

Sorry, but n00b always makes me think of :ggw:

Razzmatazz13 10-12-2007 01:24 PM

Hm...interesting concept...by post count you're going to surpass me in becoming non-noob...in time served on the cellar, I'm winning so far...in presence...well I'm better known in gabbly than on the board...and I've only started two threads....

Innnnnnteresting (could've sworn we had a chin-scratching smiley)

monster 10-12-2007 07:33 PM

n00b fight! Battle to the death!...

:smashfrea

:apistola: :magnum:

:corn:

Razzmatazz13 10-12-2007 09:36 PM

Oh...I um...didn't mean to pick a fight...I just thought his post raised some interesting questions on what made you non-noob...sorry

carry on.

monster 10-12-2007 10:08 PM

But we wants n00b fights.... :(

monster 10-12-2007 10:09 PM

(and sorry, but yer sig is damned irritating [/anotheroldfart])

Aliantha 10-12-2007 10:21 PM

geez...now who's being mean to newbies?

monster 10-12-2007 10:36 PM

oops, forgot the ;)

Razzmatazz13 10-12-2007 10:43 PM

s'alright you big meanie...I've already changed it

*runs off crying*:bawling:

how's that for nooby post? have I met newb criteria? whining? taking everything said by older poster literally?

Aliantha 10-12-2007 11:25 PM

well you just can't afford to forget those smilies otherwise no one knows when you're joking. cept Dana of course. DanaC knows everything.

That's a very interesting question. Post counts don't mean a lot here. There are some posters who've been around since 2002 and have about 200 posts - but if they've made them count then they are known, and are welcomed back when we haven't seen them in a while.

Threads started get your name noticed, but unless they are quality threads, there is no guarantee of becoming anything more than the annoying noob cluttering up the board. Tough crowd :)

The length of time served doesn't seem to affect noob-status an awful lot either. Some people feel like they've been here longer than their join date suggests - they just fit and that's it.

So I take option number 4 - being known and liked by a number of posters already here. We're a diverse board, so you don't have to appeal to everyone. And sometimes if noobs are given the cold shoulder by even one Dwellar they feel they have failed - but it's not true (honest). That is solely my opinion of course YMMV.

I still feel like a noob here myself sometimes. I feel like the newly arrived girlfriend in a long established social group. Still liable to blurt out something embarrassing because I feel I've been accepted, but taking it one step too far. Still - it's only been two years, and my closest friends in real life I've had for over 20 after all. Maybe in 20 years I'll still be here, talking about my knee operation rather than my Dad's but still having problems with my weight, my finances and my lovelife. Damn, I wish I hadn't thought that...

Nah, tis true..... I'm old enough to be her mother

razz, go clean your room, and take that smirk off your signature! :p

Aliantha 10-13-2007 06:12 PM

I remember back when I was a noob some old fart told me they didn't like my signature. I'd mention names, but it hardly seems worth it.

I still sometimes feel like a newbie too. I think it's because there are some big meanies who post here who make me feel inadequate. :alien:

Sundae 10-13-2007 06:17 PM

Sorry Ali you are still a newbie. 4 whole months after me - I'm surprised you dare post!

In truth, you & monster are (to me) examples of not-as-old-as-I-thought posters. Thought you'd both been around longer & was surprised by the stats. RK is another.

lumberjim 10-13-2007 06:18 PM

I've made my sig so annoying at times that i've had to punch myself in the mouth for it.

It was like this BIG
And Multi Colored

With Flags
and
blinking
crap
all over.

And if you think about how many posts i have, it was really a pain in the ass.

I only left it up for a few hours, but i nearly ruined the cellar entirely.

Then there was a person who only posted in this color...all the time...

Aliantha 10-13-2007 06:19 PM

haha...I'm surprised at some of the shit I post sometimes and i can fully understand why some would choose not to read it. lol

i thought you'd been here way longer than me. I don't look at people's 'stats' very much.

Only the newbies these days. :alien:

Sundae 10-13-2007 06:24 PM

Hey LJ
Didn't realise you were here
Come off HIDING and respond to some of my postsor get into Gabblyyou bum

Aliantha 10-13-2007 06:26 PM

Don't talk to him SG. He'll think you're obsessed. ;)

Sundae 10-13-2007 06:29 PM

I am obsessed.
LJ knows it and Jinx turns a blind eye (it helps that I would like to meet her too, and am obv no threat!)

It's mostly a joke, but in real life LJ does fit my criteria for a crush...

Aliantha 10-13-2007 06:34 PM

OMG! Say it isn't so!!!

Stormieweather 10-14-2007 03:37 PM

Ima noob. And that's ok. I have absolutely no problem popping in and babbling about nothing important, should I feel the urge. Like now. :D

I've just grown used to it over the years SG, women throw themselves at Jim near constantly.
Ali thinks she's being sly, but I'm onto her too...

You've never had second thoughts when he came home and said he "closed a deal" at work?

jinx 10-14-2007 06:59 PM

He's gotta pay the bills somehow Steve...

elSicomoro 10-14-2007 08:07 PM

How much money do you think Jim has cost his dealerships with his whoring over the years?
