Brain Teasers!

I figured there needs to be a thread for brain teasers, so I'll start things off with this one.

Is she spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise?

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...rclockwise.gif

I've looked at it for a while and at first I saw her spinning counter-clockwise, but then after a bit she went clockwise!
So what do you think? Depending on which way you see her tells which side of the brain you use more of!

She spins counter-clockwise
LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe

She spins clockwise
RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking

It's an interesting and fun optical trick, but according to new scientist ( http://www.newscientist.com/blog/sho...cing-girl.html ) the direction of rotation you perceive has nothing to do with which side of your brain is dominant.

Further, this whole left brain = verbal/logical, right brain = emotional/artistic business has long since been thrown out by actual neuroscientists. See http://www.newscientist.com/article/...ght-brain.html .

I guess this gives me away as a left brainer, doesn't it?

Oh well, she's got nice boobs, and that's what really matters. ;)

grazzers 10-14-2007 11:15 AM

I have to say my first thought was she's spinning clockwise, and I had to really focus to see her spinning anti-clockwise, but I'm a Physics student and pride myself on being very logical, so I would have thought I would be strongly "left-brained," so I have to side with ZenGum, I don't think this trick gives much insight into mental function.

SteveDallas 10-14-2007 12:46 PM

Hey, nice wrinkles! Were they all out of the good colors and you had to take gray?

RellikLaerec 10-14-2007 03:50 PM

Still neat on how your brain perceives it. Anyone else have any teasers?

monster 10-14-2007 03:56 PM

Clockwise. I can't even make myself see it anticlockwise.

But....

I am a figure skater and I spin clockwise, so there may be an element of expectation/comfort level in there. Also, left-handers usually sping clockwise. Most right-handers and so therefore most skaters spin anticlockwise. So I'm sure handedness will play a small part in perception too.

monster 10-14-2007 03:56 PM

Oh funny, I went back to it and now she's clearly spinning the other way!

monster 10-14-2007 03:58 PM

and now back to clockwise

Undertoad 10-14-2007 04:03 PM

I couldn't make her go clockwise until I blocked out everything but her lower foot and told myself to look at it clockwise, and then when I raised my hand to look at the rest of her, she stayed that way.

elSicomoro 10-14-2007 04:13 PM

I see her clockwise. I tried to see her counter-clockwise, but it only made my head hurt again.

Cloud 10-14-2007 04:35 PM

she switches from one rotation to another and back.

Elspode 10-14-2007 06:03 PM

I can't make her change direction unless I look at the reflection of the foot.

Still quite the mind fuck.

jinx 10-14-2007 07:25 PM

Counter - until I tried UT's trick... only works for a few seconds though, then she goes back.

lumberjim 10-14-2007 07:27 PM

mostly, i notice that her nipples are hard. then....its clockwise....if i try and come up from the bottom, i can make her go counter.

monster 10-15-2007 12:22 AM

tis still clockwise....

so what handedness do you all have? is there a correlation?

just tried is easy for me to dsee it clockwaise, but to see it anticw, I have to first see it mentally. then open my eyes and watch the animation

Happy Monkey 10-15-2007 12:03 PM

Finally I can switch her back and forth at will. I use her hands.

jester 10-15-2007 04:05 PM

Just from watching - I actually counted her rotations, she did about 20 going clockwise and then it changed and she started going counter-clockwise.

lumberjim 10-15-2007 04:07 PM

that means you have OCD

Aliantha 10-15-2007 05:09 PM

i see her as spinning counter clockwise.

I can't make her spin the other way no matter what tricks I try.

toranokaze 10-15-2007 10:17 PM

I don't get it.
When I see the lady she is spinning clockwise, but her shadow is spinning counter clockwise.

I can't seem to switch them

Spexxvet 10-16-2007 08:31 AM

Clockwise, although when I looked down to read the text it went the other way. Kinda made me sea-sick. If you look at the shadow of her foot, you can see it move right to left in front of her, so she must be spinning clockwise.

Absolutely! That is, until she starts spinning counter clockwise, and the foot is moving right to left behind her.

dar512 10-16-2007 10:20 AM

I initially saw her spinning clockwise and I couldn't imagine how anyone could see different. I was actually in the process of working it out - let's see if she were spinning counter, her hand would have to be going behind her back right now... Oh look.

Now I can make it go either way. But my mind likes her spinning clockwise.

I know

I know

thealphajerk 10-21-2007 11:36 PM

damn you.. i saw it going clockwise so i blinked repetitively to see it like a strobe light and it went counter.... but now i can't get it to go back to clockwise...

grrrargh!

RellikLaerec 10-22-2007 12:15 AM

lol Just block the top out and focus on the shadow of her foot and you can get it to go the other way.
Well since no one else wants to put another one up....

Cool one too!
Bout the girl; Over here in Belgium i see her go both ways!
(and maybe up and down too sometimes! :D )
I start seeing her counter-clock and when ive read something and look again she goes clockwise.... So? Im in a great balance here ! :p

that chick is hot. I'd do her no matter what way she spinz.

HungLikeJesus 10-31-2007 05:51 PM

I just saw this at newscientist.com.

Here's the explanation:
If you follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, it remains pink. However if you stare at the black cross, the moving dot appears green. If you concentrate on the black cross for a while, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, leaving only a rotating green dot.

There is no green dot, and the pink dots don't disappear. How does this work?

(If the dot is not moving, try hitting the refresh button, or go to this site.)

glatt 11-01-2007 11:36 AM

That's a good one. I had to do PRINT SCREEN to confirm there is no green.
