There is zero possibility that the tea that this place serves is good enough to make me want to go there.

Heck, I am wondering how they get the water for the tea.

It's part of the gag, Karen. See....you traverse the perils of the cliff face, climb a sheer wall, ride the gondolas and all that....then you get into the tea house.....they seat you near the window.....and there on the far side.....is a short stairway down to a sidewalk of a busy mountain town with running water and a McDonalds.

If I have to traverse something that scary I will want something alcoholic to drink thankyouverymuch, not tea. And make it a double!

Drinking any alcohol would make it rather impossible to get back down....


But it looks like the mountains I've seen in Korea...which the local little old ladies love to climb on weekends. I'd be really interested if we could figure out where this place actually is.

I've done a little climbing in my time, but that path scares me. How often are the wooden planks and posts replaced???
and how the #$%& did they get the materials for the tea-house up there? (LJ is probably right about there being an easy path).
Are there really enough customers to pay the bills (even presuming they can charge what they like)?
what happens when a storm sets in with 30 people at the top?

The Japanese love to hike up mountains. I bet the stairs and other climbing apparatus was there first, and the tea house was only opened at the top later as the site began to attract more people.

If it were Japan, I'd guess first there was a shrine (the mountain priests here are pretty extreme), then a hiker's path with chain, then a tea-house. Soon, there would be vending machines, two souvenir shops, a hot spring bath, and a very tacky hotel.

When LumberJim got to 9,999 posts, we joked about getting him banned or knocking a few hundred posts of his tally.
It occurred to me that it would be much, much meaner to add a few dozen posts to his tally, taking him to 10,017 or something. Taking a few off merely delays his myriation, adding a few on makes it permanently unreachable! Mwahahahahahaha.

If you go a quater the way down this page http://www.ssqq.com/archive/vinlin27a.htm there is a heap of photos and a story for the mountain. The first quater of the page is amazing as wella although I think it has been on IoTD before.

I couldn't watch the video as YouTube was stopping and starting and it makes me mad enough to spit like a camel all over this laptop. Rather her than me - I would do it as an immense personal challange (or for money!) but no way as part of a tv show.

In fact the only legal thinG I wouldn't do for money is potholing. There was a programme about overcoming your fears (they won great prIzes too) here a few years back. One woman with a fear of enclosed spaces not only went potholing but completed a route were the thinnest gap she had the slip through was 2 inches smaller than her bust measurement!! It was all to do with proving something to her daughter about facing your fears. Another reaSon not to have children!

Generally involves not strolling through wide open mapped caves.
But squeezing yourself into smaller and smaller - sometimes underground, sometimes underwater. There was a Brit film recently called The Descent (into a cave system), scared the bejesus it of me, and potholing and spelunking sound such fun as words!

true. but if you add back in the posts from the summer of the hackers and his posts in the doodad thread he's at like 10,300 or so, i'd say.

wow. i'm surprised that there is at least some planks and a chain to walk on. having lived in china for a while, i've realised that the chinese have a very important rule: do things in the extreme: if we must be dumb and dirty and stupid, then we must be dumb, dirty and stupid beyone imagination. needless to say, that makes life most difficult for everyone else. so just be happy you gotta a chain and planks instead of a thread to tread on.
