Thanksgiving
What is everybody doing? We are having about 30 people over to our house for 4 days. Should be fun. Mostly family with some friends as well. Tuesday tap the keg, barbeque. Weds Low Country Boil. Thurs two 16 pound Deep Fried Turkey's. Friday leftovers. Sat lunch and then everyone will depart except for a few hanger-ons... Anyone else?
|
Just a few friends should be nice and relaxing as long as all the kids behave
|
Ignoring the whole thing as much as possible. Too many years of doing the whole cleaning, cooking, and more cleaning thing, and crying myself silly afterwards have ruined it fo rme.
Not worth it. |
We're going to LJs mother's house, as usual. I've been asked to not make the soup course (like I usually do) becuase everyone is "too full" for dinner.
I'm very pissy about this and might just boycott the whole stupid ridiculous holiday. |

My girlfriend and I are cooking Thanksgiving on the 25th. Her parents will be arriving from various parts (Maryland and Sweden) to visit.
Apparently, her father hasn't had a "real" Thanksgiving dinner in decades. So, we're going to give him one. It should be fun, even in a time of way too much school-related stress. |
Having dinner with my family. There are only3 of us (siblings) and the respective S.O.'s so it'll be nice and quiet.
|
Brit friends from LI visiting. Big teenage boys..
I have a big turkey  ;) |
Wednesday night: Opening/closing band, Rev. Bob Levy/WYSP comedy show at Gilbertsville fire hall
Thursday: dinner at J's brother's place Saturday: dinner II here with katkeeper Monday: J's birthday |
We're going to my mother-in-law's house. I'm threatening to make my world-famous sweet potato pie.
|
Going to my grandmother's house, two hours away, for an afternoon turkey lunch with my grandparents, my aunt and her family, and my dad, stepmom, and brothers.
I am currently working at the mall while I finish my degree, so the rest of the weekend will be: Black Friday: work (NOOOOoooo....) Saturday: work Sunday: work :( |
For the first time since I was born, no family thing for Thanksgiving. My younger brother and his family always visit her family in Michigan. In the past few years, we all went to my older brother's house. Just found out older brother's family is going to her family way south of here. (As brother said "Listen, woman. This is the way it is. We are going to do what YOU want whether you like it or not." He was joking.
I'm actually kind of looking forward to cooking at home, just a little. The ex b/f (aka Homeless Guy Who Is Staying With Me After His House Burnt Down) was going to do that, now it will be 2 of us. May get some movies from the library and just have a day of it. Then again, if we can scrape up some cash and something decent is playing, maybe we'll go to the movies. |
This made me LOL

Me? I'll be trying to pretend I give a damn about some festival I've never celebrated back home, because my language school often flirts with American culture. I will also have to get four four-year-old Japanese kids to make stupid cut-out turkeys from cardboard. Which is better than last year when I was supposed to get some nine year olds to make play-dough Easter eggs and bunnies when all they wanted to make were multi-colored turds. |

I'm gonna spend the day making these:
|
I am cooking a boneless skinless turkey breast and a couple of fixins for me and my boyfriend. Then, some friends are coming over later in the night and I am planning on making my pumpkin pie and mummy's famous apple pie. With wine of course.

dammit Shawnee I had wiped those bloody things from my memory. Whatchyahaftagoandothatfor?
|
Going to my mother-in-law's in North Carolina for a couple days. It's so boring there. Oh, well.
I'd rather stay home with my wife and kids and have a non-traditional feast. Did a huge salmon fillet baked in filo dough once. It was awesome. Leg of lamb another year. Yum. Turkey is alright, but I don't get excited about it. |

Really hoping I see one of these things indicating this number or higher, this year.
|
I'm going to Taos to a bed and breakfast. They can cook and clean...I'm not ruining anyone's Thanksgiving this year! Woo- hoo 3 days off work in a row....Yowzers!! I already bought a stack of books and headed for a wood-burning kiva fireplace with hot cocoa (in my mind)!
|
I'll come with you. I've never made it to Taos.
|
Alrighty Cloud!!! I'll meet you there!
:) Seriously....Come on down!! Taos is pretty awesome....I would hate to see you spend Thanksgiving all by your lonesome. |
There is no thanks giving holiday here and I'll not miss it too much.
It is nice to see everyone once or twice a year but most of the time we end up in a big argument over this dumbassed thing or another. The foods are always great, that I'll miss. Hope everyone has a great Tgiving day though. |
we'll see. It takes about 5 hours to get to Santa Fe, which is why I've never made it to Taos. But thanks for the invite!
. . . tho I sorta invited myself! :) |
We invited a family of 4 over and my brother, niece & her boyfriend will be coming over. So that will be about 12 of us. Should be fun.
|
Going to New Orleans and maybe eat some turkey gumbo. Then take an 8-day trip on the Mrs. Sippee thru the delta and then up the Atchafalaya.

Wait a darned minute, are you turning down the self-invite?!? Only on the cellar...... :D |
er . . . I think it takes about 6-7 hours to get to Taos, my dear. A loooong drive all by myself.

Going up to the mother-in-law's in Arlington (a suburb of the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex, about 3.5 hours north of Austin.) The big problem with this is we also have my stepkids for the holiday, which necessitates a trip to Houston (3 hours one-way) on both Tuesday and Sunday for pickup and dropoff.
So to cut down on the ridiculous amount of driving, we'll be taking the 4.5-hour hypotenuse straight between Houston and Arlington, rather than making each a round trip from Austin. Austin-Houston-Arlington on Tuesday, Arlington-Houston-Austin on Sunday. But this is not a feasible plan for Minifob. He typically starts fussing after about an hour, and for some reason absolutely can't sleep in the car like normal children do. Two 7.5 hour trips would be an absolute nightmare. So I'll be taking the truck separately straight from Austin, with just me and Minifob. (And the Christmas logistics are at least this complicated, every year. Is it any wonder I hate the holidays?) Couple all of that with the overall fact of spending six days at the mother-in-law's house, which can range anywhere from moderately-to-excruciatingly boring, and I'm really not looking forward to it. And I don't even have to cook or clean, not one bit! |
My husband has Thanksgiving off for the first time in ... let's see ... fifteen years. So I'm cooking!! Not that I didn't before, but it was always just me and the kids, very quiet. This year feels more festive, with two sons home from college and the whole family here.
Personally I don't care for turkey but everyone else likes it. I'll make some roasted veggies that I like. And for dessert: white chocolate-pumpkin cheesecake. Yummm!:yum: |
We are having the usual big family get-together. 40-50 people (including kids).
I ordered a "heritage" turkey this year, so I'll be smokin' it out on the Big Green Egg!! :) Oh, and I got stuck making all the mashed potatoes too.... Booooo!! |
I'm back in Tampa with my family for the week. Had a great weekend buzzing around with friends. Now helping get the house ready for Turkey Day!

This is what happened two years ago when our visitors came over for Thanksgiving.
(it was a bit of a piss-take at the mod at the time, who kept posting horsey pics and titling them in the format: Photopost: 6 Zillion more images of the same damn horse) |
Who photoshopped in the durgs monster? Heck of a good job on that....

It'll be just me and Monkeyboy at home this year. As far as I know, he's cooking: a 14-lb turkey, mushroom gravy, challah bread stuffing, mashed red potatoes, greenbean casserole, and fresh cranberries. Tomorrow afternoon, I'm going to the bakery to pick out some kind of pie that's not pumpkin. Tomorrow night, I'd like to see Dirty Diamond at the Khyber, but that depends on what time MB finishes work, or if I feel like going ahead by myself. If we don't go, and he's not too tired from cooking all day, we'll probably head over to whatever bar happens to be open on Thursday evening.

Starting to help cook today. Mom likes to get the run-on so she can kick back a bit on Thursday. I am the official..'Hey honey, can you run to the store and get.....' "it" girl. So far I only have two trips under my belt. But I love it!

dinner at mom's with the whole kit and kaboodle family! my two sisters and their families (10 in all) and me and my two boys and a neice's boyfriend---so, 16 for turkey! despite Chemo monday, I have made three pies and a corn casserole for tomorrow. can't wait--i love to have everybody around even if I won't be able to eat. I'm just so happy to see my oldest boy!!
|
*smiles* you sound in a good mood Bri. How often d'ye see your eldest these days? He away at college?
|
Taylor (will be 18 in Feb) has been busy with football and now basketballl---he's played all four high school years (is, in fact, capt of the football team :) and I only get to see him about once a month. He is looking to go to college in my town (University of Dayton) next year which would be great!
I am feeling better than usual for a chemo week. They put some extra dexamethasone in my IV so I don't hurt so bad. Just having some real hot flashes ("chemo flush") at the moment. I am just looking so forward to seeing my son when he's NOT in a football uniform! |
Guests are gone, the few hangerons helped clean up and put things back in order. Now I am laying back and watching Mizzoo beak Kansas while drinkng a nice bottle of South African wine! (I hope)
Hope everybody had a happy holiday, including our former colonial brothers and sisters. |
Crikey, read through this thread for the first time, y'all have HUGE Thanksgivings! We thought we had a big family Easter/ Christmas when there used to be 13 of us as regulars!
