Moderator nomination thread

This is part one of the moderators election. (Part two is the actual vote.)

The term of office for this election is through 1/1/2009, and the number of moderators shall remain unchanged at two.

Nominate people to be voted on in the moderators election. People nominated here will appear in the moderators vote, unless they specifically say they do not accept the nomination.

Joke nominations are discouraged, only because I can't tell whether you are joking or not.

The moderator election is not a popularity contest, and everybody hopes that losers, if there are any, do not feel discouraged about the Cellar. Moderator is a harder job than it appears, only because people think of you differently if you are a moderator.

Nominations will close at 11:59 pm Eastern time on Jan. 5. If this is longer than appears necessary, it's only to make sure everyone gets a chance to see the thread and participate.

Nominations are open.

HappyMonkey and SteveDallas for me although there are a number of others who I'd be happy with too.

I think wolf has a lot on her plate lately so that's why I'm not nominating her again.

Stormieweather 12-31-2007 07:49 PM

Bruce again (and Wolf if she wants it) I am a mod/admin on a big site like this one and man...it is hard work! Hardly anyone ever thanks you and if you do your job well, the general membership rarely even notices you. So thank you to the moderators and admins who have kept the Cellar running so smoothly!

Well done.

Stormie

DucksNuts 12-31-2007 08:22 PM

Moderating seems to take up a lot of time and leaves little time for Bruce to post these days?

I agree, Wolf seems to have her hands full and might like the idea of handing over the job.

Can we get word from Bruce and Wolf as to what their thoughts are?

If they are wanting to hand over the responsibility, I would back up Clod, SteveDallas, Glatt and add

Monster

monster 12-31-2007 08:33 PM

I think wolf is still suffering from limited internet access?

I have no gripes about the current team, but would like to mention the following points in favor of nominating others:

1) as Stormie says, moderators get very little thanks and are not noticed if the site is going well ..except at times like these when their endeavours are brought into the spotlight and people suddenly remember to praise them. -that could make it hard to step down if you would like a break, so I welcome the nomination of alternatives, just in case either bruce or wolf feel they've had enough (temporarily or permanently), but do not want to feel they're abandoning ship

2) As UT says, moderators get treated differently -regardless of how well known and loved they are before they become mods. maybe our current mods would like a break to "be themselves" again. nominating others makes this easier (rest of argument same as above)

3) The cellar is dynamic -different mods may be the next catalyst for the next phase

4) Annual election with real choices makes this place feel more "ours", even if we go with the present incumbents. Speaking of "ours", when are you resetting the tip mug for January, UT? ;)

I agree with what monster said... I think it's a job that you really need a break from periodically. ("Periodically," of course, is open to very subjective judgment by different people.)

Nice spelling of Australia there Ibram. ;)

Merc, do you realize you nominated 3 aussies? Oh and also startled me to see one of them was me.

I will decline the nomination though thanks (although I doubt there was any danger of me being elected anyway. ;) )

DucksNuts 01-01-2008 04:25 AM

it's ok. Most people that live here can't spell anyway.

We're decended from convicts you know. ;)

NoBoxes 01-01-2008 04:45 AM

Must be nice to have a history of faith and convictions.

Aliantha 01-01-2008 04:52 AM

I think the lack of faith and over abundance of convictions is what got us to the spot we're in at the moment. :)

richlevy 01-01-2008 09:06 AM

I'm waiting for my endorsement from Ron Paul. At this point I'd be willing to settle for Ross Perot.

glatt 01-01-2008 03:47 PM

I approve of virtually all the nominations so far. I'd be comfortable with pretty much any of the regulars being a moderator, and think Bruce and wolf have done a really good job.

I think different time zones would be helpful, and it would also be helpful to have mods who are in the Cellar a lot.

I am willing to be a mod, and very flattered to be nominated. But to be honest, it's not a job I've been desiring. I've been taking more from the Cellar than I've been giving (don't hit the tip jar too much) so it would be a chance to pay it back a little, and that does appeal to me. I'm here a lot while at work. I've got the Cellar open in a background window almost all day. I'm hardly here at all while at home, so I'd probably only be able to cover things weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm East Coast (USA) time. No weekends. So I may not be around enough.

It's probably presumptuous of me to be saying any of that, but I figured I'd say it now since I'm maybe going to be out on jury duty for the next two weeks.

BrianR 01-01-2008 09:11 PM

I'd nominate myself, but I'm not on enough.

Wolf and Bruce are doing a bang-up job and I re-nominate them for another term.

TheMercenary 01-01-2008 09:48 PM

I would only state for the record that whom ever is eventually elected by UT should have shown a continual and steady position and ability to deal with the flavor of The Cellar and all that goes on here without interjecting personal positions on various issues that they may agree or disagree with. Thanks.

xoxoxoBruce 01-01-2008 10:27 PM

Merc, moderators on this board are here to do clerical and behind the scenes duty. Deal with spammers, help people fix errors, and empty the trash cans. Not control the direction or content of the posts or behavior of the posters, unless it gets to the point of breaking the rules.

Any posts made by a moderator, or UT himself for that matter, is just another personal position, with no more gravity than any other member.
I know there are members of this board that would like the mods to be "school marms" and keep a knuckle slapping ruler handy. Fuck that.

LJ 01-01-2008 10:49 PM

Fuck everybody, for that matter. fuckers.

xoxoxoBruce 01-01-2008 11:55 PM

Hmmm... maybe I should rethink my position.

Aliantha 01-02-2008 12:15 AM

I'd like to nominate LJ.

It's mostly because he complained, but also because regardless of my personal feelings, he's generally pretty fair and has demonstrated a greater degree of compassion than I'd have given him credit for.

Boy how times have changed huh?

NoBoxes 01-02-2008 12:48 AM

We wouldn't even have to vote LJ in. The Cellar can levy a youtube tax and we can OWN him. The moderator's job may become a matter of indentured servitude. Thrifty!

So far, I haven't seen a nomination that I'd refute. It speaks well of the community.

Not necessarily in that order.......Well, those are my votes.

We still need LJ for his special skills and services....

I'm not sure what he's complaining about...He's the only person around here that can do his cellar job....
Maybe we should give him a proper cellar title and just elect him to it every year.

DanaC 01-02-2008 04:49 PM

Thanks for the nomination case:) I don't think I'd be suitable though... too erratic in my dwelling these days :P Never know when I am going to vanish for a couple of weeks and even when I am around, I often just do a flyby ('specially now *grins*)

I think the current mods have done a fine job. If bruce and wolf wanted to continue I'd definately support that. If not, well, pretty much most of the regulars strike me as a good bet. Happy Monkey, Glatt, monster, Case, cloud, Clod, lookout and LJ all spring to mind. As do Zengum, Elspode and .... can't quite believe I am about to type this name, but here goes: Urbane Guerilla.

That's one campaign promise that's sure to be kept.

LJ 01-02-2008 08:54 PM

my point, exactly.

wolf 01-02-2008 09:09 PM

I'm still here, and still willing to continue as a moderator, if you'll have me.

I'm hoping to resolve the internet access issue shortly, now that the moving and holiday rushes are both over!

Oh, and trust me, you don't want slang having this kind of power.

Really.

It would be kind of like LJ moderating, but without any impulse control.

To the moderators, past, current and future: Thank you.

You ageist mother-scratchers.

ZenGum 01-03-2008 10:15 PM

Since my name has been thrown in the Goblet of Fire, I should say that I plan to leave Japan (and thus my superfast* internet access) sometime within the next three months, and don't know what kind of access, nor how much free time, I will have after that. So I think I had best decline this year. If I am still about next year I would like to put some effort in to the cellar.

*About 20MBPS ... If I could be bothered dealing with the hassle of doing business in a foreign language, I could have fiber-optic all the way to my computer and get about 100MBPS for less money than now. There are some things about this country that I will really miss.

Thanks for the clarification. I am a mod on another forum and have been a moderator on a major large newspaper forum; on the later it was not a good experience, as everyone wanted the "school mama" approach, which I refused to do... In other words I have some insight into both kinds of moderation behavior. Thanks again.
