Happy Birthday Peace Sign
1 Attachment(s)
The Peace Sign is 50 years old today.
What a wild ride it's been. |
make that "what a long strange trip it's been."
|
last night I saw the South Park episode where Cartman was the only one who could save the town from the hippies who were taking over with a music festival. He said he didn't like the 'giggling stoner' attic-type hippie, was repulsed by the 'drum ring' hippie but really despised the 'college know-it-all' types. Ah, Cartman. Have some beefy logs and cheesy poofs on me.
oh, and, peace, dudes. my high school quote was "what a long, strange trip it's been." :) |

I just realized something. While I was duly entertained by various peace sign graphics bouncing around the culture until 1973, right down to "Hawks and Doves" in Mad Magazine -- I never ever used or drew the symbol.
|
I absolutely, positively, without a doubt, believe you.
|
FYI, I just bought 2 business card wallets made in India from therainforestsite.com for $1.85 each. They were on sale because the embroidered peace signs on them were stitched on upside down.;)

Now Bruce, this one puts you on the spot: totalitarians abuse populations, do they not? Above the law, quick to war, and so on and so on? Quite the long list of sins, right?
So are they or are they not the walking, working definition of evil? Now why would anyone think making peace with evil is a good thing? Ball's in your court now. |
Who said anything about making peace with evil? Not every country has to be friend or foe. The world is much more complex than your black or white view.
If a people are oppressed, it's up to them to remove their oppressor, just as we will be doing in November. |
WTF? What does totalitarianism have to do with *peace*?
The *desire* for peace has zip to do with how it is achieved. Peace should be the goal of all of us. Sadly, the realities of society make achievement of that end problematic. Sadly, sometimes we must wage war to end up with peace. Probably the biggest single dichotomy of human existence, IMHO. |
Reminds me of Stephen King's Hearts in Atlantis story.
It seems odd to me that the peace sign was invented (yes, I know it was) because I saw it everywhere growing up. That and the A in a circle denoting anarchy, although that was mostly graffiti. How to brainwash your children? Tell them that the sign for anarchy is drawn by people who don't want laws. Any laws, but especially the good laws that protect people. So anyone would be free to kill and steal and hurt and burn down your home... It gives a visceral reaction to a 5 year old and tends to make them view the 16?17?yo punks in the town centre as harbingers of unimaginable horror. |
Bruce, that's a very questionable remark for someone of your manifest intelligence, in spite of how widely you've gone astray.
I said it -- precisely because it's the thing you'd rather wave away. Sorry 'bout that (I kid), but the question stands. Answer well, or would you rather do what so many of the adherents to the view you'd rather I adopted, and wimp right out? Wimping out, of course, is hardly acceptable to good men, but much cherished by bad ones. Well, fuck that for a dollar and a half. But go ahead and essay a decent reply. The exercise may well give you improvement and insight -- which I like. I'd particularly like it in you. |
oh no! Peace out UG!

You seem to be ignoring that I have proposed it. You, my friend, are wimping out. Not good. Doubleplusungood, if you'd rather. But I do get those a lot from my opposition -- excuses, that is.
The utter inability to recognize, let alone destroy/remove/verb of choice so long as it is eliminative the evil of totalitarianism (it's too easy for totalitarianism to stay evil, and good government does not come from the totalitarian philosophy) is what tells me the Left is collossally Stupid with a capital S. They can't remove, repel, or even admit of evil. Stupid people, full of worthless excuses. Low, crawling, lickers of the jackboot. Such as these shall never ever be let into power again. Why associate with this even in your mind, Bruce? I don't. Yet you tell me this is somehow the "wrong road?" I laugh, Bruce. I laugh. |
Cartman, is that you?
|
Probably not.
I'm not impressed yet. Pity, really; you're not stupid and you aren't warped. You could come to enlightenment, but you don't want to. Seems to me a dumb thing not to want. |
