Sydney is world's best city - again

From the Sydney Morning Herald:

Quote:

THE weather has been rubbish, the hospitals are crook, the trains are late and crowded, and housing prices are through the roof.

Yet Sydney still sparkles in the eyes of more than 10,000 people in 20 countries who have rated it the world's best city for the second year in a row.
Although I think it's great that an Australian city has copped this gong, I personally think Melbourne or Brisbane are nicer cities. That being said, Sydney certainly has all that touristy and businessy stuff going for it.

So who's coming to Sydney then?

skysidhe 03-02-2008 07:37 PM

London and Paris were let down by the lack of satisfactory, affordable accommodation and worries about the friendliness of the locals. New York is seen as dirty, expensive and unsafe.

"Sydney has shown that it is not just a great tourist destination, but it is truly a global city, ranked top of the class for beauty, climate and friendliness.<-- I guessed as much.:)

Bullitt 03-02-2008 09:14 PM

All the more reason I'm planning on visiting sometime in the not so distant future.

lumberjim 03-02-2008 09:16 PM

fuck sydney. and the horse it rode in on. fuck brisbane too. and melbourne can lick my nuts.

Aliantha 03-02-2008 09:54 PM

What's up your skirt jimbo?

lumberjim 03-02-2008 10:01 PM

oh nothing....

..just presenting an alternative viewpoint.

I mean, these 'best' places to be/live/work stories are such crap. You can be happy nearly anywhere.

that is to say, if you're a miserable fuck in Pittsburgh, you'll probably be a miserable fuck in Seattle too.

with all that said:

I'm real glad you're so pleased with yourself for being Australian and all, but in light of recent anti american topics and sentiments you've communicated, i'd like to invite you to suck it.

Bullitt 03-02-2008 10:03 PM

Suck it long, and suck it hard?

sucK it?

Aliantha 03-02-2008 10:06 PM

You know what jimbo, why don't you do it yourself? I'm sick of trying to explain myself to the morons around here who really have no concept of open discussion. Particularly those who only get involved in order to sling insulting personal remarks.

Would you all be happy if everyone who happens to be non american leaves just so they don't hurt your poor little feelings when they point out that America is not necessarily the best place on the planet. That other countries have things about them that are good too, and get this: sometimes they're better!

with all that said:

I'm real glad you're so pleased with yourself for being American and all, but in light of recent anti non american comments you've communicated, I'd like to invite you to fuck off. :)

Have a nice day. ;)

lumberjim 03-02-2008 10:08 PM

you want us.

Aliantha 03-02-2008 10:14 PM

I thought you were taking your drunk arse to bed?

Spectacle 03-03-2008 02:24 AM

Sydney doesn't even come to mind when I think of world cities.

New York, Toronto, Paris, Los Angeles, London, Beijing, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Cairo, Seoul, Sao Paulo, Chicago and Mexico City all come to mind before Sydney...in my honest opinion.
But congrats, makes me want to go there to see what all the hooplah is about.

TheMercenary 03-03-2008 07:16 AM

Personally I would love to visit and spend time in Australia. I have always wanted to visit. Things I dream about are the beautiful beaches, the friendly people, love the accent, the outback, the North side of the continent, the South side, Tasmaina, the reef, the list goes on. I have a soft side for the UK, Ireland, Australia, and NZ.

glatt 03-03-2008 08:22 AM

I spent 3-4 days in Sydney and found it to be a very nice city. Reminds me a lot of San Francisco, but with warmer weather. And cleaner.

Cloud 03-03-2008 09:49 AM

I would love to visit Australia, and any of its cities. Lots of cool people there, obviously.

Trilby 03-03-2008 11:04 AM

Oh, Ali just works for the Oz chamber of commerce. Is business.

Beest 03-03-2008 11:53 AM

Not that I don't think Sydney is bonza, and is on our list of things to do ( shame we can't drive there it would be a definite road trip destination) but,
the surveys seems to be a marketing gurus measure of how random people around the world perceive the city. It's famous enough for people to have heard of it, and vaguely good stuff like it's in Autralia where it's sunny and they drink beer, but not infamous enough that people have heard bad stuff about it, if there is anything, also Hollywood doesn't make movies about it being crap.

I would like to say "flamin' galah" in no particular direction what so ever:D

glatt 03-03-2008 12:21 PM

Well, one memory I have of Sydney is that they have these really exotic looking white birds with long curved beaks. Like flamingos or something. I thought they were really cool and special, until I saw a couple of them pop up out of a garbage can with garbage in their beaks. Exotic flying rats.

i dated a girl named sidney for a short time. is that the same?

glatt 03-03-2008 12:33 PM

I thought Sidney was a guy's name.

Well, anyway the rat birds are the Australian White Ibis. And apparently they are an annoyance in Sydney. I wasn't just imagining it. So there. Sydney has a flaw.

Dick. ;)

actually at the time 10-12 years ago, quite a few strippers were using that name... wait - did i say that?

Cloud 03-03-2008 12:54 PM

Hitchock notwithstanding, I'd rather be overrun with birds than actual rats. Although I'm sure Sydney has those too in spades.

I doubt anyone clicked my link and followed through the slide show, so I'll post a pic here. Exotic rats.

Cloud 03-03-2008 01:16 PM

or . . . desperate creatures faced with extinction and forced to scavange garbage for survival . . .

best observed at a distance, obviously

lookout123 03-03-2008 01:19 PM

i don't like birds so i didn't follow your link.

thanks for putting the picture in a post. now it can haunt me for the rest of the day.

Cloud 03-03-2008 01:44 PM

does Sydney also have pigeons?

glatt 03-03-2008 02:36 PM

I think so. I don't really remember.

Aliantha 03-03-2008 04:15 PM

Sydney has pigeons. Thousands of them.

The Ibis lives all over Australia and has greatly profitted from human habitation. They're traditionally a marshy area bird, but they really love scavenging. They're quite a problem in some areas. We have them in Brisbane too.

The survey was of 10,000 travelers, so...whatever beest. The survey is done every year, and I'd be very surprised if they asked people who hadn't been to Sydney if they liked it or not. You'll find more info here.

If they are like the birds in that pic they are some huge assed pigeons? Fucking homeless in the US could eat for a week on one of those things.

smoothmoniker 03-04-2008 09:57 PM

I have many wonderful memories of being down in Sydney for about a month. Great place to work, great people, surprisingly good musicians (I'm an LA snob, but at least I know it), and wonderful, wonderful food.

One of my snapshot memories is of having dinner at Doyle's seafood, upstairs in the corner table, looking out over the Opera House.

I'm not trying to be snarky but, the survey you link to there is not the one the OP is based on, 10,001 travellers say it's a nice place to visit, Super I'd love to visit there.
It scores tops in but that's not aimed at telling me if I it would be a good city for me. I try to read through the headline and don't trust anything anybody in sales or marketing or on the interenet, tells me :D

Aliantha 03-05-2008 04:24 PM

The link in the op was only the newspaper article describing the results of the survey.

They are two different surveys, conducted by different business organisations, on different groups of people with intention marketing to different customers..
but they still come to the same conclusion, Sydneys is teh awseome OMGWTFtasotBBQ
obviously a conspiracy:tinfoil:

Aliantha 03-06-2008 04:03 PM

You're right Beest. My apologies, although I guess it doesn't matter in the end does it.

lushchocolateswirl 03-07-2008 12:23 AM

I think Melbourne is supposed to be the most livable city. You know, to bring up a family etc.
