Whaling Protestors go too far

While I don't think Japanese whaling ships should be allowed to operate in Australian waters (and perhaps not even international waters), I don't think throwing acid on board the ship is going to help matters.

From todays paper:

Quote:

JAPAN summoned ambassadors from Australia and the Netherlands after it said environmentalists hurled stinging acid on to a Japanese whaling ship, injuring three on board.

Australia, a leading opponent of Japan's whaling, quickly condemned the latest attack by the militant Sea Shepherd group, which has vowed to stop Japan's expedition by force if necessary.

Members of Sea Shepherd threw more than 100 brown envelopes containing a white powder and bottles of butyric acid from their own vessel on to the Japanese whaler Nisshin Maru, Japanese officials said.

Butyric acid, a by-product of cheese-making, is used in making industrial alcohol and can sting the eyes. Sea Shepherd said they threw rotten butter.

Save the Whales- Kill some people...that's my motto....
;(
Reminds me of PETA....peta-nuts....

This will end in people's lives being lost this year I think. It's really escallating beyond control.

A legacy of Steve Irwin of course and his Wildlife Warriors.

Here's what Wiki has to say about it/them:

Quote:

In contrast to Greenpeace, which maintains a policy of avoiding causing damage to whaling ships in the oceans, Sea Shepherd endorses a deliberate policy of sinking or sabotaging vessels they believe have violated international whaling law.[4] As a result, Greenpeace has officially disavowed any connection to Sea Shepherd and refused to assist their efforts, stating "... we are not going to help people who have said they will use violence. We are here to save the whale, not put the lives of whalers at risk."[5]

Sea Shepherd is based in Friday Harbor, Washington, in the United States and Melbourne, Australia for its Southern Hemisphere operations, and has a fleet of three vessels it calls "Neptune's Navy": the RV Farley Mowat, the MV Steve Irwin, and the RV Sirenian, as well as several smaller boats.[6]

More info about Sea Shepherd and what they're up to this summer.

Quote:

Sea Shepherd is currently on its fourth expedition to the remote southern waters off the coast of Antarctica . Japan is targeting endangered whales in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary and Sea Shepherd will not stand by while whales die. With our ship, the Steve Irwin and a dedicated crew of 41 international volunteers, the Whales' Navy, under the command of founder and president, Captain Paul Watson, will uphold and enforce international conservation regulations on the high seas against the Japanese whaling fleet's self imposed quota of 935 piked whales, 50 endangered humpback whales and 50 endangered fin whales in the Southern Oceans
.

And here's more info about the Irwin family's involvement.

Quote:

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is proud to partner with Terri Irwin to launch Operation Migaloo as she and Steve have been world renowned for their conservation work. Terri knows that Steve would have been extremely honored to be acknowledged in this way as he shared the Sea Shepherd’s passion for saving whales.

DucksNuts 03-04-2008 05:20 AM

Fuck those whaler fucks....throw more acid!!

The whalers dont abide by the law, so let Sea Shephard do what they will.

My only negative...if the shephard's are going to use these methods to make their point...they best not bitch and expect the government to step in and help out when they get caught again.

Mmmmm, cheese. Mmmmm, butter.

So it stings their murderous eyes a bit. Boo freaking hoo.

DanaC 03-04-2008 10:40 AM

Yeah Shawnee I was just thinking that. 'Injured' in this case obviously means they had a bad case of stung eyes....maybe a little like having tear gas. Not pleasant but hardly that dangerous.

Having said that I am appalled at their policy of sinking ships.

God I cannot wait till they try to pull this one.. some serious hippie ass-beating will ensue.

Uh-oh, they better watch out.

Quote:

The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, codenamed Operation Satanic[1], was a special operation by the "action" branch of the French foreign intelligence services, the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure (DGSE), carried out on July 10, 1985. It aimed to sink the flagship of the Greenpeace fleet, the Rainbow Warrior, while she was docked in the port of Auckland, New Zealand, to prevent her from interfering in a nuclear test in Moruroa.
Fernando Pereira, a photographer, drowned on the sinking ship. Two of the French agents were subsequently arrested by the New Zealand Police on passport fraud and immigration charges. Following questioning, they were subsequently charged with arson, conspiracy to commit arson, willful damage, and murder. As part of a plea bargain, they eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to ten years, of which they served just over two.
The ensuing scandal resulted in the resignation of the French Defence Minister Charles Hernu, and the subject became so touchy that it was not until twenty years afterward that the personal responsibility of French President François Mitterrand was officially admitted.
I guess since they're messing with Japan, this time it will be ninjas.:ninja: (am I the first guy to find an appropriate use for the ninja smiley?)

:eyebrow:

...I have nothing to say to this...
:D

TheMercenary 03-04-2008 01:34 PM

If I was the captain on those whaling ships I would sink those fuckers if they got in the way. Esp Sea Sheaperd, there actions endanger people, I would draw the line and drop an exploding harpoon below the water line everytime they showed up. Piracy on the sea.

Shawnee123 03-04-2008 01:47 PM

lol...I love it!

There actions over their are they're own.

Exactly.

And also the fact that they're putting not just their own lives at risk, but other people just trying to do their jobs.

And also the fact that their policy of sinking ships is simply wrong in my opinion. What happens when they decide they're not getting anywhere and decide to sink another whaling ship, only this time it's a Japanese ship?

I wonder.

Protest away. I don't think they should be killing the whales either, but violent protesting always ends in tears and often death.

Environmental terrorism.

Undertoad 03-04-2008 05:47 PM

I don't believe in what the Shepherd's doing, so I intend to charter a huge great yacht and mount some cannons on the front to intervene.

Cicero 03-04-2008 06:55 PM

Yep...My problem with the whole deal is they aren't going to the whale blubber main office and getting the head honcho. Just the worker who is probably already injured from doing the job. Has a family to feed and all that....

If that's what it takes to stand on the moral high-ground then I had better go back to the drawing board.

I agree, and I will sink the Sea Shepherd in a fucking heart beat. I hope they drown with wails.

Aliantha 03-04-2008 08:54 PM

Sea Shepherd is the name of the organization. The name of the ship they're using in this case is the Steve Irwin.

classicman 03-04-2008 10:56 PM

In that case its dead already -

I loved watching Steve Irwin, but man that was good.

Aliantha 03-08-2008 05:29 PM

The Japanese whaling ship threw a grenade at the 'steve irwin' on Friday. No one was killed, but one of the protestors ended up with a piece of shrapnel lodged in his kevlar vest.

The question I have is, why were they wearing kevlar? Did they know they were going to be shot at?

It sounds like two criminal organizations are "going to the mattresses."

lushchocolateswirl 03-08-2008 06:34 PM

Green Peace I support, PETA I dispise. Sea shepard ? Where the heck did they spring from?
As soon as the Japanese come up with exactly what they are getting out of these so called science experiments I might stay quiet, but everyone else seems to be able to acquire information and science data without slaughtering thousands of whales. But business is booming in the whale meat industry:eyebrow:

xoxoxoBruce 03-08-2008 11:07 PM

Regardless of what they are getting in the way of scientific data, as I understand it, they are doing it where they shouldn't be.

lushchocolateswirl 03-09-2008 06:31 PM

yep totally agree with that . There are many protesters down there checking that they don't go outside the zoning area but it's only the big guns that get any publicity. that's why they can throw hand grenades and have to wear ballistic vests, this is happening in international waters. Otherwise there would be criminal charges layed.

What I would like to see is when the next season comes around, take a huge load of tourist ships down to whale watch . If they are anywhere near the Jap ships at least they will get to see some whales.;) There would be outcry then.

Or take a whole bunch of people in boats down there to thow handgrenades at the protesters and maybe they will learn to protest in ways that don't endanger the ships and crews.

DucksNuts 03-11-2008 04:46 AM

Fuck the ships and their crew.

The protesters have stepped up their efforts this year because every year this shit happens.

Do I agree with their methods? not 100%, but it is certainly getting results...they have stopped a lot of unnecessary whale deaths this year.

Its going to end badly, there is no doubt, but I have no sympathy for the ships and their crews.

Aliantha 03-11-2008 05:18 PM

How do you know it's stopped whale deaths? They have a quota to fill and they'll just stay there till they catch them.

And I have no sympathy for the protesters, If one of their ships sink and people die it will be no one's fault but their own.

DucksNuts 03-18-2008 05:11 PM

I agree totally, Merc.....but I still believe the whalers deserve whatever they get.

Aliantha 03-18-2008 05:24 PM

Ducks, I thought you should know that the protestors are claiming to have saved over 500 whales this season. Perhaps you were right and I was wrong. I guess the whalers could say there just wasn't that many whales around though and that it had nothing to do with the protestors in which case, I wonder if they're going to research the reason for there being less whales.

DucksNuts 03-18-2008 11:08 PM

YAY the whale huggers
