A 'cane? wen duz come de 'cane?

Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly,
Edouard, Fay, Gustav, Hanna, Ike,
Josephine, Kyle, Laura, Marco,
Nana, Omar, Paloma, Rene, Sally,
Teddy, Vicky, and Wilfred
are the hurricanes for the 2008 that starts this weekend.

Shawnee123 05-28-2008 11:08 PM

When do I get to be a hurricane?

Sundae 05-29-2008 07:02 AM

I want to be one too!
I think Paloma sounds the meanest. But Bertha sounds the wettest.

Hmmmm - I wonder if I can get odds on that?

Bottle it and never again worry about high gas prices. Also called renewable energy.

sweetwater 05-29-2008 11:35 AM

I notice the list does not include a Hillary, John, or Obama.

dar512 05-29-2008 12:27 PM

What's the next level of wind speed above hurricane?

I was really disappointed that, of all the Hurricane Dolly coverage I saw, not one outlet had the headline "Hello, Dolly!"

We're going to get flooding rains tonight courtesy of remnants of Dolly, so they say.

Urbane Guerrilla 07-30-2008 10:34 PM

All our weatherish news atm is about our Southland quake -- felt it, rolled with it -- and miscellaneous fires; did you get your buckets of rain?

We finally have a 'cane worthy of attention. Gustav is tracking south of Haiti and Cuba. Predicted track directs it for just east of New Orleans (where Katrina made landfall). Currently Gustav is not a hurricane. But its track puts it constatly across 84 degree (29 degree) water all the way to landfall as demonstrated by a below NOAA ocean temperature map.

This one could be category three during the weekend.

Elspode 08-27-2008 08:50 PM

What is that? Plots derived from all the various models?

TheMercenary 08-27-2008 09:08 PM

Yes. It is all the models on one page.

TheMercenary 08-27-2008 09:13 PM

I find this site to be the most informative. Since I live about 5 miles from open water we pay pretty close attention to this stuff.

If you look at this storm track it tells you a lot of info. Current position, highest wind speed, current and predicted. Expected location by date. And it is updated about every six hours. Click on the current storm Atlantic Track.

I live over 100 miles from the gulf coast. Folks haven't forgotten Katrina. No water, canned goods in stores and they are full of people.
Damn! all I want is a few nanas and green onions.

Trilby 08-29-2008 02:58 PM

If this one hits NOLA----well, I'm glad I visited when I did. 'Tis a cool city with tons of talent and just, well hell, the French Quarter is reason enough to save it!!! Plus, I always wanted a NO funeral for myself. They are SO COOL.

Clodfobble 08-29-2008 03:44 PM

Man... if you thought some people were callous about rebuilding the first time, just wait and see how nonexistent the rebuilding effort is, if it gets hit again.

I fall into that category. I think that nothing below sea level should have been rebuilt, and if it gets hit again I'll have zero sympathy for anything below sea level getting destroyed. Build below sea level if you want. It's a free country. But don't expect any handouts/help/sympathy when you are flooded. And don't bail out any insurance company that is stupid enough to insure buildings below sea level. That's where I draw the line. Actually, I don't have to draw the line there, as sea level is a well established line already.

sweetwater 08-29-2008 04:22 PM

I am too timid to suggest names for hurricanes, but for tropical storms I have 2: T.S. Eliot and T.S. Garp. A - D, F, and H - Z are still open, but I'm working on them.

Clodfobble 08-29-2008 04:49 PM

Oh me too, glatt. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...

TheMercenary 08-29-2008 05:11 PM

If it happens again they really just need to go in and remove all man made structures, do an environmental clean up, and let it become a lagoon.

Nirvana 08-29-2008 05:56 PM

Easy to say when you live in Texas, Virginia and Georgia? Why has there never been hurricanes that were as destructive before Katrina in that area and why would it only take 2 storms for some to want to shitcan the whole place?

Clodfobble 08-29-2008 07:07 PM

Who cares about the place, what about the people? Why should we encourage people to continue to rebuild in a location that is going to threaten their lives?

What does "the place" have culturally that isn't brought by the people? It's the people who matter--and if they want to put their lives and their families' lives on the line for a place, then they're welcome to, but it's not my job to buy them a third house when the second one gets washed away.

A good Cat 4 would wipe my house from the slate. We are only 5 miles from open water ocean and 150m from a very large tidal river with tide variance of greater than 8 feet each day. If my house got wiped out there isn't an insurance company that would insure me to rebuild. I would just have to move. Of course my house is not below sea level either. Many of the people in NO did just that. Left and didn't come back. This could easily be another Katrina:

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...w-orleans.html

How much more of our resources should we or the state of LA continue to pour into a place below sea level?

Oprah bought this poor woman with mucho children a brand new house and a brand new van right before Katrina. Katrina ruined the woman's home. NOW Oprah is rebuilding her home, setting her family up in the choicest hotel in Naw'Lins...I wonder if Oprah is gonna be up for round three?

monster 08-29-2008 09:40 PM

If theCitizens of NO were allowed to name them, would this be their list?

Asshole
Bush
Cunt
Death
Elevation
Fuck
George
Help
.......

Perhaps getting to name the next year's storms would be a cathartic exercise for the victims of a serious hurricane. "Well my house is fucked and my MIL is dissing me to the wife, but you know what, the next MF is gonna be named after my MIL.....

I hope that never happens to you or anyone else . Personally I would rather spend our resources here for our own disasters than for the global crises that are occurring. But who gets to choose how and where money is spent? For example how big is Iraq and if they have oil money why do they need our financing? Aw never mind that is a whole 'nother thread! :headshake

Best of luck to anyone in the way of Gustav and his little buddy. I guess the response will be better this time.

Even George Jr can learn that you don't go to California for a campaign fund raiser and then to McCain's house for a birthday party when the head of the National Hurricane Center calls everyone. Why call everyone? Because the hurricane obviously would be that destructive. Now a lesser hurricane appears. So George Jr will not go to a Convention. He finally learned that the president cannot wait for Cheney (on a hunting trip) to make decisions for him.

Yes, wacko extremists need falling buildings, unwinnable wars, and flooded cities before they will listen to intelligent moderates.

classicman 08-31-2008 03:08 PM

Got anything new to say there T-dub? Or have you taken all this time off just to come back with wacko extremists and unwinnable wars? Come man - you need to get some new material. You've been kickin this dead horse too long.

I just spoke to an old friend, from Gretna,La the west bank. They'er a few miles NW of me. 50 or so. Took them 11 hours to make the trip. Way under 3hrs. most time.

Clodfobble 08-31-2008 08:17 PM

Are you staying where you are, buster? Be safe.

ZenGum 08-31-2008 09:24 PM

Can we have a roll-call of dwellars who live in the Hurricane-prone areas, so they can log in and tell us how thigns are for them?
A quick scan of my memory produces the following list of people in the general "South" area:

Mercenary?
BusterB?
ZippyT?
Chocolatl?
(And Choco's significant other ... damn memory gap there, sorry).
Any more?

Please let us know your status, when you can.

jinx 08-31-2008 09:28 PM

Not zippy, he's in the earthquake danger zone though - New Madrid fault.
