Today's stone bumming, wrench in the works, fly in the ointment groove scorcher is the one course I am able to afford AND can fit into my work schedule, a single day marathon Biology class (with lab) is full. As are all other iterations of said class.

The chem classes (tricky as the one I actually need has two pre-req hoops to leap through) are all offered MTW 8-3 or MTWR 8-12.

I will see if I can do a math class, which will be needed for the physics I need to take, I'm sure.

It looks like I may have to wait until Fall to get this ball rolling, and that will push my brew school back to 2016. I may have to think outside the box as some have suggested. I'll see if the pope needs a right hand man. I'll also see if Davis will let me provisionally apply whilst class work is under way.

Groove status: Tenuous.

A friend of mine posted this on FB earlier:

Quote:

Our President has refused to send a representative to attend Margaret Thatcher's state funeral in Britain
He sent an contingent to communist dictator Hugo Chavez's funeral. He called for flags at half staff for drug addict Whitney Houston and nothing for "the American Sniper" war hero. A friend on my facebook wrote "I hope they ban assault weapons so we can sit in a restaurant without the fear of being gunned down"

Up is now down, wrong is right, the sky is purple and and people think our rights are privleges the government grants us.

I shake my head daily.
Of course, statements 1 and 3 are totally false. I don't know if he copied this from someone or what.

Quit fucking looking for shit that reinforces your beliefs. Comfort is not a bad thing, but just challenge yourself!

Are there similar brew programs elsewhere? :(

footfootfoot 04-18-2013 12:17 AM

There are plenty of brew programs but I'd still need the math and science refresher to make heads or tails of them. It just pushes my plans back several months to a year. The Davis one seems to be the most comprehensive and lowest priced at ~20K when all is said and done. There is another program in Denmark that's about 45K for 18 weeks.

Not including airfare or accommodations!

The fly in my ointment is the fly/s in my kitchen. I swear i've swatted the same one about 5 times today!

If its a refresher you need not a requirement, how about online learning? Empire State College? Some SUNY classes are available on-line.

footfootfoot 04-18-2013 08:12 AM

Proof of college level course work is required, although a degree is not. The math I can do online, but the lab courses, I cannot.

orthodoc 04-18-2013 11:32 AM

Niagara College? Associate degree program that sounds pretty good, and no more expensive than Davis.

footfootfoot 04-18-2013 12:35 PM

That would be cool. ~ 8 grand tuition for a two year program, though also filled through 2014.

And I would probably have to learn to speak Canadian or do you think they teach in English?

orthodoc 04-18-2013 12:38 PM

You'll definitely have to become fluent in Canadian. Be sure to say 'oot and aboot' a lot and do all your swearing in French.

eta - I forgot the most important thing, eh?

Pootine?

orthodoc 04-18-2013 03:52 PM

Non, non, il faut dire 'poutine, eh?'

The 'eh' is critical. If you forget it you'll blow your cover.

Eta poutine is disgusting. You have to order it but at a propitious moment you can surreptitiously dispose of it in the nearest potted plant. There are unfortunately no handy spittoons in Canadian bars.

footfootfoot 04-18-2013 04:42 PM

Ahh poutine. Looked great up until the curd cheese which I mistakenly correctly read as crud cheese.

I think the oot and aboot sound is an approximation of a more glottal pronunciation of the ow sound. When I say out my throat is relaxed and the sound comes from the front of my mouth. When I imitate that girl I have to make the sound from the back of my throat, almost glottal. If I try to make that sound in the front of my mouth it sounds like oot.

I'm sure a speech therapist has got proper terms for all that, eh?

orthodoc 04-18-2013 05:55 PM

You're getting it! And the 'oot' thing is exactly as you say. A shorter, glottal-stop vowel combination that truly doesn't sound like 'oo'.

I never said 'eh' (never!) but after living here awhile, I realized that all my relatives do! And my bff from Ottawa! And they all have accents!

Of course they interrupt my snickering by laughing at my Pennsylvania accent.
