best singing voice

it's one of those polls

elSicomoro 11-01-2008 11:21 PM

Best and most distinctive aren't necessarily the same thing. For example, Peter Garrett (Midnight Oil) and Dave Matthews are quite distinctive, but they wouldn't be in my best-of list.

I can't pick just one, but Karen Carpenter would definitely be up there...they say she had perfect pitch.

Big Sarge 11-01-2008 11:29 PM

I wish Tarja Turunen was on the list. She is my fave! I ended up voting for Johnny Cash

lumberjim 11-01-2008 11:31 PM

i can't choose

Clodfobble 11-01-2008 11:32 PM

I couldn't tell you which one is the best, but I'd like to register an anti-vote for Bob Dylan. His voice makes my bowels weak. Only other people should be allowed to sing his songs.

lumberjim 11-01-2008 11:42 PM

early Dylan

lumberjim 11-01-2008 11:53 PM

Robert Plant for his amazing masterful musicality.

Cash is distinctive, and a close second.

elSicomoro 11-02-2008 12:50 AM

Of those on the list, I had to go with Chris Cornell. I idolized him in high school...Goddamn, that dude can wail. Listening to "Slaves & Bulldozers" by Soundgarden still gives me chills.

elSicomoro 11-02-2008 12:52 AM

Hey, did anyone else read that LZ is threatening to tour without Robert Plant...WTF?!

Crimson Ghost 11-02-2008 12:58 AM

Zoli - from Ignite
Bif Naked
Glenn Danzig
Fergie
Bruce Dickinson - aka The Human Air Raid Siren
King Diamond
Aja Kim (Bruce "Lee" Chickinson)

------------------------------------

Remember, best and most distinctive are two seperate things.

Sundae 11-02-2008 08:18 AM

Sting
Bono
Both so distinctive, can make the hairs on my arms stand up.

Neil Finn - has such great range and is effortless in the higher registers.

Christina Aquilera - not my style of music, but man she can belt them out. When she happens to sing a song I like, I really admire her voice.

Nirvana 11-02-2008 10:11 AM

No Sarah McLachlan? No Frank Sinatra?:sniff:

Cloud 11-02-2008 10:49 AM

go Freddie!

Cicero 11-02-2008 05:46 PM

Siouxsie Sioux. Wait, that isn't on there. Her range kicks all their asses. She rocks!!

ROCKS!!!!

Sheldonrs 11-02-2008 05:58 PM

Ella Fitzgerald

Pie 11-02-2008 06:46 PM

I'm with Freddie. I'm not usually a fan of high male voices, but holy crap that guy could sing.

There is no way in hell she has broader range than Cyndi Lauper.

lumberjim 11-02-2008 09:18 PM

forgot the chick from the cranberries

and cat stevens

Aliantha 11-02-2008 09:25 PM

What about Pink? She's pretty good even in concert. Great in fact.

smoothmoniker 11-02-2008 10:55 PM

A friend of mine just joined that tour, playing keys and 2nd guitar. If you see Pink live, keep an eye out for the 30 year old trying to look 18.

Aliantha 11-02-2008 10:59 PM

She's touring here again next year. We went last year and it was awesome. She's a great act to watch, and I really love her voice. We might go again next year if we can get decent tickets. I think we'll have to be quick though. She's very popular here.

Oh, and about boys in rock bands? Don't most of them like to pretend they're still spring chickens even when they're old boilers? lol

Shawnee123 11-03-2008 08:13 AM

Did you mean Chrissie Hynde? She's awesome.

Of this list, I have to go with Natalie Merchant. I think she's great.

Trilby 11-10-2008 01:32 PM

Wait a minute...I'm the ONLY ONE who votes for Joplin?

Philistines!

Mad Professor 11-30-2008 03:06 PM

I'd go for Joni Mitchell, beautiful voice and a beautiful creative artist.

BigV 12-07-2008 03:02 AM

Most distinctive: Billie Holliday

Most best: Ella Fitzgerald

wolf 12-07-2008 09:26 AM

"Best" and "Most Distinctive" are mutually exclusive categories.

BigV 12-07-2008 09:10 PM

Perhaps the thread creator was trying to economically express two questions, not one either / or question.

I read it as two questions, hence, two answers.

Urbane Guerrilla 12-09-2008 01:43 AM

Distinctive, excellent bel canto male soloist -- Andrea Bocelli.

But just distinctive, without being good -- yeah, Bob Dylan even at his best sang like a duck. Now he sings like an unintelligible duck, if that fiasco of a live song by satellite from Japan is a sample. I was shocked and saddened.

Madonna is not on the list... distinctive, but no good. Reedy quality. Not enough for me. I didn't even buy her sex book.

Rod Halpert was a real tenor who sang rock and roll, not baritones struggling to sing tenor like Robert Plant and Ozzy Osborne.
