Happy Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!

A Visit from St. Nicholas, more commonly know today as Twas The Night Before Christmas (or The Night Before Christmas), was published by Clement Clarke Moore (July 15, 1779 – July 10, 1863) anonymously in the Troy, New York Sentinel on December 23, 1823. The poem is one of the first modern stories about Santa Claus, and thus is one of Santa Claus' favorites. The poem has been continuously in print.
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night."

Wow. Christmas again already. My 4th Cellar Chrimbo Yey:)

Happy Holidays to all of you. My life is richer for your friendship (and cocks, obviously) and warmer for your presence. Good times, bad times, they're all Cellar times. And that makes me mighty glad.

Dear Dwellars,
If you can't laugh with your relatives this year, laugh at them, they'll be too drunk to notice.

sweetwater 12-24-2008 12:36 PM

Merry, merry, and happy, happy to everyone, Cellar Dwellers and lurkers. And especially to all the children and pets.:fsm: :grouphug:

Peace & joy to your worlds.

The merriest of christmases to everyone in cellarland.

Sundae 12-24-2008 02:13 PM

I've talked you all up in my house this year, so I can genuinely say Merry Christmas across the miles. My Mum at least really appreciates what you have helped me through this year and in previous years. My Dad probably still doesn't really get it, but I can assure you if you turned up at a family celebration, he'd shake your hands and thank you. Even if it would just be an automatic response.

My heartfelt good wishes to everyone here. And may 2009 bring you at least what you aspire to, even if it's not your ultimate desire. Those are hard to come by after all, and I'm beginning to believe in the fairy stories - it's the journey that's the important thing.

Love you all (well, 99%)

A very merry Yuletide and Christmas to all my wonderful friends here in the Cellar. It's a marvelous place and I'm blessed to know you. Yes, even Jinx, who is probably Mexican.

You are all so wonderful, witty and kind. May your kindnesses return to you throughout the year and beyond.

and Bruce? I love ya, baby.

Trilby 12-24-2008 03:57 PM

...to be maudlin: Last year, when I was so sick, so many of you took the time to remember me and to cheer me. You are such special people. I've not found kinder souls anywhere.

a thousand-million thanks.

My house is tidy! Well...tidy by my terms. I spent most of Christmas Eve, from about 6pm, hoovering and cleaning. Eventually stopped and decided that was as good as it was getting at about midnight lol. But I got the joy of waking up this morning to a relatively clean house (except for Pilau having been sick on the clean throwover on the sofa; but I handwashed it quick and set it drying. It's back on now).

I've been putting off that tidy for about 4 weeks lol.

classicman 12-25-2008 10:12 AM

May you all find contentment and joy in all you do and with those you love. Health and prosperity to each of you.
